DESCRIPTION:An Evening Dedicated to Dignity and Noble Work\nMay 15\, 2025\n5:00 – 7:00 p.m. ET\nRobertson Auditorium\, Michigan Ross\nFree and open to all\, registration required\n\nJoin the Center for Positive Organizations for a unique evening weaving together academic inquiry\, business leadership\, art\, and changemaking as we focus on asking brave questions about the transformative power of human dignity and purposeful work. As part of the Positive Organizational Scholarship Research Conference\, this special evening session is free to attend and open to all.\n\nResearchers Reut Livne-Tarandach and Hooria Jazieri will set the stage by sharing insights from their research exploring how organizations build social architectures that enable or constrain the recognition of inherent human worth. Building on this view of dignity\, we welcome Peter Quigley\, President and CEO of Kelly\, who will share his personal story and how it has shaped his passion for work that imbues people with dignity and worth. Under his leadership\, Kelly pursues the purpose of connecting people with work that enriches their lives\, especially through initiatives they refer to as Noble Work. Illuminating the idea of human dignity and noble work from a different perspective and organizational lens\, we welcome Vince Womack\, artist\, director\, and conductor at the James A. Foshey Learning Center\, a K-12 public school in South Los Angeles. In an onstage conversation\, Vince will share the passion that led him to the work he does with young people\, how he builds community that inspires purpose for his students\, and his motivation to create a film that tells the story of dignified work. Watching 'The Last Repair Shop' together with Vince\, we will see dignity and noble work come alive through the eyes of people who maintain the musical instruments for the students. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mind Matters: Stuttering Fact vs. Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Stuttering is a speech condition that interrupts the normal flow of speaking. Someone who stutters knows exactly what they want to say\, but they have a hard time getting the words to come out the way they want them to. They may experience blocks (where a sound doesn’t come out)\, repetitions (where they repeat a sound)\, or prolongations (where they hold a sound for a long time). The cause is unknown. Because of this\, many myths abound about stuttering\, like that someone is just being shy or nervous\, but the reality is that stuttering is not something a person can control. \n\nJoin us as experts from the U-M Speech Neurophysiology Lab dispel these common stuttering myths and share what they have learned through over a decade of neuroscience-based stuttering research. They will offer insights into what we know—and don't know yet—about stuttering\, as well as practical tips to help all of us be better listeners to those in our lives who stutter. They will be joined by Anthony Sun\, Co-President of the Ann Arbor Stuttering Awareness and Research Club (A2STAR). He will share his perspectives as a person who stutters and as the leader of a local stuttering support group.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

DESCRIPTION:Explore \"Moth Eden\,\" an evocative art exhibit by Anne Erlewine\, running from April 19 to July 6\, 2025. ‘Moth Eden’ is a series of works exploring the relationship between the sacred reverence of the female form depicted as landscape and the conditioned tension of objectification contrasted by omission through eclipsing desire with the natural essence of bloom and nectar as it pertains to moth sustenance.\n\nAnne Erlewine\, an artist from Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, cultivated her artistic talents from an early age\, inspired by her fine artist grandmother. Her creative journey was further developed at the University of Michigan\, where she studied art and writing.
