DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026**\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim Cogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abuse of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evokes the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and circumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings are also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Hands have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are reminders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing it into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Beyond Rankings: Bayesian Learning of Parity\, Tiers\, and Dynamic Regimes
DESCRIPTION:Rankings are widely used to summarize comparative information\, but they can suggest differences that the data do not strongly support. In paired-comparison data\, two competitors may receive different ranks even when their underlying abilities are very similar. This raises a fundamental statistical question: when should competitors be ranked separately\, and when should they be regarded as statistically tied?\n\nIn this talk\, I will present a Bayesian framework for learning rank structure and competitive balance directly from paired-comparison data. A geometric constraint on latent abilities controls the extent of ability differences and allows rank tiers to emerge naturally when competitors are not meaningfully distinguishable. I will then extend the framework to longitudinal data using a hidden Markov model\, allowing competitive balance and rank structure to change across persistent historical regimes.\n\nI will discuss the statistical formulation\, computation\, and theoretical properties of the model\, and illustrate the approach with applications to the National Basketball Association and the English Premier League. These applications show how the framework can identify changes in competitive balance\, recover meaningful rank tiers\, and quantify uncertainty in rankings. DESCRIPTION:Please join the English Department for the 2026 Annual Lora Hutchins Heberle Award and Lecture with Professor Amanda Anderson of Brown University:\n\nSome of the most influential frameworks for understanding human thought -- in psychology\, in moral and political philosophy\, and in cognitive science -- have failed to recognize the quality\, form\, and significance of slow\, persistent ruminative processes oriented toward experiences of moral shock or disturbance. Such experiences include but are not limited to profound loss\, grief\, regret\, or injury\, including those fundamental assaults on dignity we might designate as status-injury. Drawing on examples from the literary tradition\, I demonstrate that rumination is a productive moral process and not merely a psychological symptom of oversensitivity or trauma endured. \n\nAbout the speaker:\nAmanda Anderson joined the Brown faculty in 2012 as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities and English. She served as Director of the Cogut Institute for the Humanities from 2015-2026. Her research focuses on broad questions of intellectual history\, disciplinary formation\, and the relations among literature\, moral life\, and politics. She served as host of the podcast Meeting Street from 2020-2023. \n\nHer books include Rumination in Life and Literature: A Vindication (forthcoming University of Chicago Press\, 2027)\, Humanities Theory (with Simon During\, Oxford\, 2025)\, Character: Three Inquiries in Literary Study (with Rita Felski and Toril Moi\, Chicago\, 2019)\, Psyche and Ethos: Moral Life After Psychology (Clarendon Lectures in English Literature) (Oxford\, 2018)\, Bleak Liberalism (Chicago\, 2016)\, The Way We Argue Now: A Study in the Cultures of Theory (Princeton\, 2006)\, The Powers of Distance: Cosmopolitanism and the Cultivation of Detachment (Princeton\, 2001)\, and Tainted Souls and Painted Faces: The Rhetoric of Fallenness in Victorian Culture (Cornell\, 1993).  She is co-editor of George Eliot: A Companion (Wiley-Blackwell\, 2013) and Disciplinarity at the Fin de Siècle (Princeton\, 2002). \n\nFrom 2008-2014\, she served as the director of the School of Criticism and Theory\, an interdisciplinary summer institute hosted by Cornell University. She serves on the boards of the School of Criticism and Theory (as a Honorary Senior Fellow) and the international Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes. Prior to joining the Brown faculty\, she was Caroline Donovan Professor of English Literature at Johns Hopkins University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:2026 IRWG/Rackham Community of Scholars Symposium
DESCRIPTION:You're invited to the 2026 IRWG/Rackham Community of Scholars Symposium! This symposium features interdisciplinary feminist scholarship from the 2026 IRWG/Rackham Community of Scholars fellows. The Community of Scholars is a two-month summer fellowship and the only feminist dissertation-writing workshop at the University of Michigan. It supports graduate students enrolled in any Rackham program on the Ann Arbor campus who are conducting scholarly or creative work related to women\, gender\, or sexuality.Community of Scholars participates in a weekly seminar throughout May and June. Faculty in the Women’s & Gender Studies Department facilitate these sessions\, which emphasize peer review and cross-disciplinary exchange. Facilitators offer mentorship\, individualized feedback\, and guidance on writing from a feminist perspective.The fellows reconvene for the annual Community of Scholars Symposium to share the product of their summer’s work with each other and a broader audience.
