SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | A History of Unowned Dance: Bodies in Transmission
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in East Hall 4448. We recommend entering East Hall using the Church Street entrance and taking the elevator to the 4th floor. This event is in-person only and will not be livestreamed or recorded.\n\nThis lecture examines how dance is transformed through embodied transmission rather than preserved as a fixed tradition. Drawing on more than three decades of artistic practice between New York and Japan\, Yasuko Yokoshi reflects on how choreography\, Nihon Buyo\, and Noh have continually reshaped her body and artistic practice. Through performance examples and the ongoing dojojiproject\, the lecture considers transformation not as the opposite of the archive\, but as the very condition through which dance survives.\n\nYasuko Yokoshi is a choreographer and dancer whose work explores embodied transmission\, dance lineage\, and the unstable nature of dance as a living archive. Based in New York from 1996 to 2015\, she received two New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards (2003\, 2006)\, a Guggenheim Fellowship\, a NYFA Artist Fellowship\, support from Creative Capital\, and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award. Her works have been presented internationally\, often engaging the space between contemporary dance and Japanese traditional performing arts.\n\nThis lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Dance. To learn more about this department\, please visit https://smtd.umich.edu/department/dance/.\n\nThis lecture is supported in part by the William P. Malm Fund.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Subjective Divorce Risk\, Perceived Outside Options\, and Intra-Household Allocation
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Basit Zafar\, Reuben Kempf Professor of Economics in the University of Michigan’s LSA Department of Economics\, for “Subjective Divorce Risk\, Perceived Outside Options\, and Intra-Household Allocation\,” with Adeline Delavande\, Gizem Kosar\, and Alessandra Voena.\n\nAbstract: Divorce is a central source of uncertainty for married households and a key determinant of labor supply\, specialization\, savings\, and intra-household allocation. Using new survey data from married individuals and couples in the United States\, the study elicits subjective divorce risk\, expected outcomes if a marriage continues\, and expected outcomes following divorce. It documents substantial heterogeneity in perceived divorce risk\; measures expected effects on labor supply\, fertility\, health\, and within-household allocation\; and uses these expectations to inform a model of wives’ labor supply under divorce risk.\n\nPlease RSVP via the event page to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Effects of School Phone Bans: National Evidence from Lockable Pouches
DESCRIPTION:Schools across the United States are increasingly limiting students’ phone use during the school day. This talk examines one popular approach: lockable phone pouches. We use nationwide data from large-scale surveys\, GPS-based measures of phone activity\, standardized test scores\, school administrative records\, and sales records from the largest pouch provider.\n\nUsing a staggered difference-in-differences design\, we find that adopting phone pouches substantially reduces student phone use\, as shown by both GPS data and teacher reports. In the first year after adoption\, disciplinary incidents rise and students report lower well-being\, suggesting that schools may experience short-term disruption as students adjust. In later years\, however\, reported well-being improves and the increase in disciplinary incidents fades.\n\nWe find little evidence that phone pouches improve academic achievement overall: average effects on test scores are consistently close to zero. Effects differ somewhat by school level. High schools show modest gains\, especially in math\, while middle schools show small declines. We also find little evidence that pouch policies affect attendance\, students’ self-reported attention in class\, or perceived online bullying.
