DESCRIPTION:Graduate student Adam Lenhart performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Flavor Dependent Jet Fragmentation and Open Science at LHCb
DESCRIPTION:One of the remaining mysteries of the Standard Model is how emergent properties of hadronic matter arise from quark and gluon degrees of freedom. For example\, there is still much to be learned about the process  by which hadrons are formed from color charged quarks and gluons (hadronization). The LHCb detector offers a unique opportunity to study this process in terms of the flavor of quarks involved in the hard scattering   process\, enabling measurements of the fragmentation process in heavy flavor jets with unprecedented precision. The unique features of these data motivate both a substantial effort to extract high precision measurements of heavy and light flavor jets\, as well as an effort to preserve and provide open access to these data for the physics and data science communities to explore. In this talk\, I will review recent jet fragmentation function measurements from LHCb in comparison to global measurements. I will then briefly cover the LHCb open data efforts\, culminating in the review of a publicly available dataset and analysis workflow enabling exploration of the jet fragmentation process at LHCb.

SUMMARY:Presentation:ISRMT Seminar:  Difference equations of average entropies
DESCRIPTION:Exact cumulants of entanglement entropies of random state ensembles have traditionally been studied within the random matrix framework. In this talk\, we propose an alternative approach based on the intrinsic connection to integrable systems. The central idea is to embed entropic quantities into tau functions satisfying Toda-type lattice equations\, which in turn yield linear difference equations for their averages. Directly solving the difference equations recovers exact entropy formulas in the literature. The integrable systems approach bypasses the case-by-case\, ensemble-dependent derivations required by random matrix methods. DESCRIPTION:The dynamical Mordell–Lang problem asks how one forward orbit intersects a subvariety. We consider a complementary question over number fields\, allowing passage to a suitable finite extension: can a proper Zariski-closed subset meet every rational grand orbit?\nAssuming a Zariski-dense forward orbit\, Pasten and Silverman answered this question negatively for linear automorphisms of projective space and for self-morphisms of geometrically simple abelian varieties. We will see that the answer is no for every dominant self-morphism of an abelian variety\, without the dense-orbit assumption. If time permits\, we will also discuss the case of projective space.

DESCRIPTION:Let a finite group act on a smooth projective toric variety via lattice automorphism. We show that its cohomology is a permutation representation: it is induced from a group action on a set. This answers a question of Stanley\, for all smooth projective toric varieties\, without the usual properness assumption. The proof uses ideas from mirror symmetry.
