DESCRIPTION:The first of an annual symposium that will celebrate the naming of the Scott Pranger ALS Center at Michigan Medicine on September 25\, 2026\, at 2:30 p.m.\, in the Kahn Auditorium of the A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building.\n\nJoin leading faculty\, researchers\, advocates\, and members of the ALS community for an inspiring day dedicated to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and improving the lives of those affected by the disease.\n\nThe event will feature a recorded discussion with Sanjay Gupta\, M.D.\, the award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN\, talking about his new book on pain\, an often overlooked burden for those living with ALS.\n\nFollowing his keynote will be a live panel discussion led by Center Director Eva L. Feldman\, M.D.\, Ph.D.\, on pain.  She will be joined by leading pain experts—Chad Brummett\, M.D.\, Daniel J. Clauw\, M.D.\, and Jill Schneiderhan\, M.D.—and Stanford Morris ALS Clinic Director Stephen Goutman\, M.D.\, M.S.\n\nThe afternoon will also feature special messages from U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell\, former U-M Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Fisher (recorded)\, and Michigan Medicine interim CEO Ganesh S. Palapattu\, M.D.\, along with members of the ALS community\, including Scott Pranger\, James A. Hiller\, Esq.\, and Dr. Feldman. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A tale of two polynomials: positivity in wonderful varieties and matroids
DESCRIPTION:I will share a story of two polynomials\, the Poincarè polynomial of Chow rings of toric varieties of matroids\, and the h-polynomials of nested set complexes of matroids. The story is set in a rich network of positivity properties coming from geometry and combinatorics of matroids\, with connections to moduli spaces of rational stable curves. The main theorems are matroidal analogues of Gal’s conjecture\, and real-rootedness of some of these polynomials. (Joint works with Basile Coron\, and Luis Ferroni)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Discrete structure\, continuous dynamics: graph-theoretic approaches and singular parametric limits in biochemical reaction networks
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: A biochemical reaction network is based on a discrete object: a directed graph whose edges are labeled with reaction rates. At the same time\, it is governed by continuous dynamics\, typically expressed as a nonlinear system of polynomial ODEs. These two descriptions encode the same system but have fundamentally different mathematical structures. This mathematical tension raises the question: how does the discrete structure of a biochemical network govern its continuous dynamics? In this talk\, I will explore this question through several examples at the intersection of graph theory\, dynamical systems\, and applied algebraic geometry. In particular\, I will focus on singular limits in which reaction-rate parameters tend to infinity. These limits motivate a graph operation that resembles an edge contraction\, and I will examine their effects on graph invariants expressed as rational functions of the model parameters. I will then extend this construction to structural identifiability and discuss how model reduction alters the geometry of parameter space. Finally\, I will turn to a stochastic interpretation of this graph-theoretic framework and describe how asymmetry in the spectral decomposition of a finite-state continuous-time Markov process gives rise to a signature of departure from thermodynamic equilibrium\, with unexpectedly nonmonotone behavior even on the simplest networks. I will conclude with a discussion of broader future directions focused on understanding how network operations may affect qualitative dynamical properties of the system. Together\, these examples illustrate how biologically inspired networks generate subtle structural questions and new mathematics at the interface of discrete and continuous systems.\n\nContact:  Zhiyan Ding

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Birefringence and Axiogenesis
DESCRIPTION:Recent analyses of Planck and ACT CMB data report a 2–4σ hint of isotropic cosmic birefringence of β ≈ 0.3°. This corresponds to a parity-violating rotation of CMB photon polarization and points to new physics beyond the Standard Model. We demonstrate that cosmic birefringence and the baryon asymmetry can be simultaneously explained by the rotation of an axion in field space. In this axiogenesis framework\, the axion rotation generates the baryon asymmetry through electroweak sphalerons\, while such a rotation can arise in the early universe from explicit U(1) symmetry breaking expected from quantum gravity. The minimal models predict the correct sign of β based on the observed baryon asymmetry\, as well as a period of matter and kination domination ending around a temperature of 3-50 MeV that makes the models falsifiable through future astrophysical probes and can lead to unique gravitational-wave signatures.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mathematicians and engineers of the 1940s set out to design machines capable of making critical decisions in the face of uncertainty. In less than a decade\, they developed a suite of powerful mathematical technologies\, including information theory\, linear programming\, game theory\, and neural networks. These tools didn’t merely lay the foundation for contemporary computer science but became the foundation of a new definition of rationality itself\, reshaping how we judge human decision making. The Irrational Decision traces how a computational framework designed for machines came to define rationality for people in economics\, public policy\, and popular culture.\n\nThis talk will explore success stories in accelerating computers\, regulating pharmaceuticals\, and deploying electronic commerce. The successes reveal a common pattern. Automated decision systems thrive in well-defined spaces with clear rules and measurable goals. However\, the same systems produce results ranging from brittle to absurd outside those controlled settings. Given these strengths and limitations\, the talk will close by asking how we can put these tools to work without surrendering human agency and judgment.\n\nBio: Benjamin Recht is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California\, Berkeley. Ben studies the foundations of machine learning\, be they mathematical\, statistical\, and computational\, or philosophical\, sociological\, and historical. He is the author of three books: Optimization for Modern Data Analysis (2022) with Stephen J. Wright\, Patterns\, Predictions\, and Actions (2022) with Moritz Hardt\, and The Irrational Decision (2026). He also spends too much time blogging at argmin.net.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Emily Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Geologic volatile cycling is fundamental to the past and future habitability of our planet. The elements carbon and sulfur in particular play essential roles in the regulation of global surface temperature. Carbon in the form of CO2 acts as a greenhouse gas\, insulating and warming the planet\, while sulfur in the form of aerosols (e.g.\, SO2) contributes to cloud formation and global cooling. Geologic processes control and moderate global climate on long timescales (millions of years)\; yet\, on shorter timescales (tens of thousands of years)\, solid Earth carbon and/or sulfur release may drive environmental catastrophe and mass extinction We will explore a few aspects of this cycle from the perspective of a metamorphic petrologist. Rock metamorphism is an often-neglected part of the geologic volatile cycling\, but I will argue that it may be of paramount importance to our planetary habitability. Drawing examples from Ancient mountain-building and Mesozoic mass extinction\, an observation-driven approach is used to quantify some of these interactions. Finally\, we will explore volatile cycling at coronae on Venus and consider implications for the evolution of its deep mantle and surface environment.
