SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Summer Institute Course - Intermediate Questionnaire Design
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate Questionnaire Design\nJuly 21-24\, 2025\n12:00pm-4:00pm EDT\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nParticipants should have prior knowledge of questionnaire design before attending.\n\nThis course is designed to follow on from Introduction to Questionnaire Design or Designing and Writing Questions for Surveys: Guidelines and Recommendations. Now instead of looking at question comprehension from a cognitive side\, the linguistic side will be explored including online tools. Factual questions will be revisited but with the goal of exploring different types of respondent memory problems. Solutions include basic aids to improve memory and alternative methods: decomposition\, calendars\, event history calendars\, internet enabled devices\, wearables\, apps and sensors\, and additional tasks on mobile phones. Also covered are the effects of telescoping and quasi-facts. Subjective questions will be revisited to understand attitude consistency and inconsistency and to cover the popular topic of satisfaction and other customer experience metrics. Alternatives methods to attitude measurement will also be covered: factorial surveys and multi-item scales. The course concludes with multi-cultural issues raised by Rincón and a mini appendix on ways to translate survey questions and evaluate the translation. The course will be interactive with the goal of making it as close to in-person training as possible. There also will be workshops throughout. Pamela is happy to chat with participants about their own questionnaires.\n\nPamela Campanelli is a survey methods specialist\, chartered statistician\, fellow of the academy of social sciences and an international trainer\, researcher and consultant who runs her own business (http://www.thesurveycoach.com/). Her background is in social statistics\, survey methodology\, and psychology with a special interest in the study of survey error and data quality focusing on questionnaire design\, question testing strategies\, interviewing techniques\, sampling and weighting\, survey analysis\, and mixed-mode designs. In addition to providing consultancy\, conducting research\, writing papers\, reviewing for journals\, advising committees\, Dr. Campanelli’s focuses on providing training courses. She is committed to high quality learning. She believes in delivering courses that are lively and engaging\, foster an informal and interactive atmosphere\, communicate concepts in a straightforward and accessible way\, illustrate the material through the use of ‘real life’ examples\, and provide workshops to put theory into practice.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. If you have any questions regarding the application process\, please use the online contact form or email the Summer Institute at isr-summer@umich.edu .\n\nThe program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design\, implementation\, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948\, and has offered such courses every summer since. The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business\, public health\, natural resources\, law\, medicine\, nursing\, social work\, and many other domains of study.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Simulating Quantum Chemical Dynamics in Condensed Phases: Methodological Developments and Applications
DESCRIPTION:Quantum effects play a critical role in many problems of chemical dynamics in condensed phases. In this presentation\, I will introduce recent progress from our group on the development and application of the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method\, a non-perturbative framework for accurately capturing the influence of environmental degrees of freedom on quantum systems. I will first highlight recent algorithmic advances that extend the method’s applicability to more complex systems. These include efficient treatments of the exponential decomposition of bath correlation functions for general spectral densities and low-temperature conditions\, as well as the integration of tensor network techniques to enable HEOM propagation involving thousands of effective modes. Several applications of the HEOM method will then be presented\, including charge transport and separation dynamics in organic semiconductors\; quantum coherence in excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes and related ultrafast spectroscopic phenomena\; and the dynamics of systems under strong light-matter interactions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm
