SUMMARY:Performance:Summer Carillon Concert Series: Claire Janezic
DESCRIPTION:Claire Janezic is an American carillonist living in Belgium. She’s currently a Masters student at the Lemmensinstituut (Leuven\, BE) studying carillon in a pedagogical context with Carl van Eyndhoven. She also receives carillon lessons from Koen Cosaert. Claire’s carillon journey began at the University of Rochester\, graduating in 2022\, where she also taught carillon and organized a weekly carillon concert series. Her carillon education continued under Koen Van Assche at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ (Mechelen\, BE)\, through a Fellowship from the Belgian American Educational Foundation. After graduating in June 2023\, Claire studied with Geert D'hollander as a Blanchard Carillon Fellow at Bok Tower Gardens (FL\, USA). In 2024\, she was laureate of the International Carillon Competition \"Queen Fabiola\" (Mechelen\, BE) and won the first prize of the International Carillon Interpretation Competition (Brielle\, NL). Claire currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America\, and is the assistant carillonneur of Turnhout. She has performed concerts in Belgium\, Denmark\, France\, Germany\, Ireland\, Lithuania\, the Netherlands\, and the US\, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Carillon duo “Fellowship of the Ring” with Sydney Nguyen (USA).\n\nSummer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus\, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nMetered visitor parking near Lurie Tower is available behind the Walgreen Drama Center. Additional street parking along Bonisteel Blvd. is available after business hours\, and metered visitor parking is available by the E.V. Moore Building (lot NC10)\, the North Campus Recreation Building (lot NC44)\, and the Art & Architecture Building (lot NC43).

His trademark guitar licks drove their Hot Rod Lincoln cut into the Top Ten in 1972. He has released twelve CDs on his own\, and played guitar live or on record with a who's who of Americana and Roots Rock 'N' Roll\, among them Gene Vincent\, Link Wray\, Bo Diddley\, Hazel Dickens\, Doug Sahm\, Hoyt Axton\, Emmylou Harris\, Maria Muldaur\, Dan Hicks\, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Text Analysis\nJuly 21-24\, 2025\n10:00am-11:30am EDT (M-Th)\nLive Online via Zoom\n\nIn this two-week course\, students will learn a variety of natural language processing methods for analyzing and extracting meaning from text data. The course will start with an introduction to text data\, including text preprocessing and exploratory methods. The topics that follow will include machine learning models used for topic modeling\, clustering\, classification\, sentiment analysis\, and word embeddings. Students will also be introduced to web scraping. Considerations to both long and short texts of various subject matter. Class examples will be demonstrated primarily in R. This course assumes a bachelors-level background in Statistics or related field and knowledge of R or Python\; no prior knowledge of text analysis is assumed.\n\nRobyn Ferg is a senior statistician at Westat. Her doctoral and postdoctoral research focused on developing methods for extracting insights from social media data. She has taught graduate and short courses at the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (University of Maryland) and given talks on text analysis at the Census Bureau\, University of Maryland\, University of Michigan\, Michigan State University\, and several national and international conferences. She has published original research on this topic in several peer reviewed journals. She has a PhD in Statistics from the University of Michigan.\n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. Course fees are based on the total number of hours assigned to each course\, the hours are listed on the course description. The 2025 schedule lists additional courses. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.
