DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Muted Volumes: Book-Objects\, Patterned Papers\, and the Closed Stacks of Buhr
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Quantum Research Institute | Integrated Nonlinear and Quantum Photonics with Heterogeneous III-V-on-Silicon Nitride
DESCRIPTION:Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96563776551?jst=2\nIn-Person: West Hall\, Room 411\n\nAbstract: Integrated photonics is revolutionizing how we generate\, manipulate\, and transmit quantum information. In this presentation\, I’ll highlight recent results on heterogeneous integration of III-V nonlinear and quantum photonic components with ultra-low-loss silicon nitride circuits\, including: (1) multiplexing arrays of quantum sources for reconfigurable multi-user quantum networking\, cryptography\, and clock synchronization\, (2) chip-scale squeezed microcombs for quantum-enhanced detectors and sensors\, and (3) low-threshold power optical parametric oscillators and amplifiers for applications requiring high gain with a low-noise figure of merit. I’ll conclude with future directions envisioned for engineering heterogeneous photonic systems in the next 5-10 years.\n\nBio: Galan Moody is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of California Santa Barbara. Prior to this\, he was a Research Scientist (2015-2019) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder\, Colorado\, and a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at NIST (2013-2015). He received a PhD in Physics (2013) and a BSc in Engineering Physics (2008) from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is a recipient of a US Air Force Young Investigator Program award (2020)\, an NSF CAREER award (2021)\, an ACS Rising Star in Photonics Award (2024)\, and the UCSB College of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award (2024). He serves as a thrust co-lead and on the executive committee for UCSB’s NSF Quantum Foundry\, is the Associate Director for UCSB’s Institute for Energy Efficiency\, chairs several conferences including FiOLS and CLEO\, and is on the editorial board for PRX Quantum and IOP’s Journal of Physics: Photonics.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biomedical Engineering (BME 500) Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nMRI brings together physics\, engineering\, and clinical medicine\, creating a wide range of career opportunities. I will share my own path from academic research and industry collaboration to product management and marketing\, including what an MBA added to a technical background. I will also look at where the field is heading through both technical and business lenses: AI throughout the imaging chain\, ultra-high-performance gradients\, and low-helium systems expanding patient access.     \nBio:\nDr. Yuchi Liu is an MR Product Manager at Siemens Healthineers. She earned her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University\, then spent several years at Case Western and Michigan Medicine as a post-doctoral research fellow developing quantitative cardiac MR methods. In 2023 she joined Siemens Healthineers as a collaboration scientist\, supporting Cleveland Clinic on cardiac diffusion imaging. She also holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan. Earlier this year\, she transitioned to her current role\, leading marketing and product management for the 3T MR scanner portfolio and neurology at Siemens Healthineers.
