SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar |  Mapping the Dark Matter in the Milky Way with Stars: The Signal We Already Have
DESCRIPTION:Dark matter has so far revealed itself in exactly one way: through gravity. In this talk\, I will argue that this makes the distribution of dark matter our only positive signal — and that mapping it precisely may be our most direct route to understanding what dark matter is. Galactic dynamics is no longer data-limited but model-limited\, and the assumption most in need of revision\, underlying nearly all of our models\, is that galaxies are in equilibrium. I will present recent work leveraging Gaia DR3 that reveals a declining stellar rotation curve\, show how underestimated errors in Jeans modeling bias these results\, and how simulations let us build a more robust treatment that avoids tensions with other probes of the density profile. I will then turn to dwarf galaxies\, where the kinematic data will not substantially improve and only better inference can extract the physics: I will present GraphNPE\, a graph neural network method that recovers dark matter density profiles from sparse stellar kinematics\, revealing a hint of a core in Boötes I\, consistent with self-interacting dark matter. Finally\, I will turn to the local velocity distribution\, where the Milky Way's merger history imprints substructure that the Standard Halo Model does not capture\, and use mutual information to show that this history is itself progressively erased from stellar dynamics — setting a fundamental limit on what the Galaxy can ever tell us. Together\, these results outline a program of inference that assumes no more than the data supports and extracts no less than it contains\, arriving just as Gaia DR4 and the next generation of spectroscopic surveys come online.

We will center our mathematical analysis around the problems of limbless locomotion and walking while holding a cup of coffee. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  We study the modified Benjamin-Ono equation for small\, localized initial data where no solitons arise.  Unlike the standard Benjamin-Ono equation\, the modified version is not known to be completely integrable\, so we cannot rely on integrable systems tools. First\, to manage the nonlocal Hilbert transform in the linear part of the equation\, we split it using positive and negative frequency projections. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ottoman Greek Settlement in the Mitten State
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Topalidis will present the historical events surrounding the migration and settlement of Ottoman Greeks in Michigan. The lecture will contextualize these events through the lens of Social Memory Theory and emphasize the erasure of migrant and refugee identity writ large. To achieve this\, the lecture will combine macro-level findings from extant scholarship with micro-level novel evidence from the Ottoman Greeks of the United States Digital History Project at Flagler College. \n\nThe lecture will cover the following subjects:\n•	The displacement of Ottoman Greek migrants from their communities during World War I and the Greco-Turkish War.\n• Experiences of Ottoman Greek migrants fleeing from the cities of Izmir\, Ordu\, Şarköy\, Semendire\, and Ürgüp.\n• Experiences of Ottoman Greeks during their settlement in Michigan.\n• Experiences of second- and third-generation descendants of Ottoman Greeks during their formative years in Michigan.\n\nDr. Yiorgo Topalidis received a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Florida in 2022. Yiorgo’s research interests are emigration from the Ottoman Empire to the US and White identity construction\, contestation\, and transgenerational memory transfer. He is currently working on a monograph that explores the social construction of Ottoman Greek migrant identity in an early-20th-century U.S. context as a case study for decoupling Whiteness from White supremacist Whiteness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Transparency and Contradiction
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the contradictions of transparency\, as a concept\, practice\, and aesthetic within the public sphere. Drawing on insights from her recently published monograph\, Nath offers a vision of document transparency located in social history\, American militarism\, and formations of power and difference. In this talk\, Nath traces the Cold War rhetoric that inspired the 1966 Freedom of Information Act through the contested world of transparency activism. By drawing on wide-ranging examples from antiracist organizing\, environmental initiatives\, investigative journalism\, and document diplomacy\, she offers a portrait of transparency as both an inscription of and challenge to power. \n\nAnjali Nath is Assistant Professor in Institute of Communication\, Culture\, Information\, and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her work focuses on the visual culture of American militarism and the archives of state violence. Her book A Thousand Paper Cuts: US Empire and the Bureaucratic Life of War (Duke University Press\, 2025)\, is a critical reckoning with the racial and imperial work of paper.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.
