SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Friday Seminar Series - Ant-fruit/seed interactions in Neotropical ecosystems: Effects on the biology of seeds and seedlings
DESCRIPTION:Although most shrub and tree species in tropical environments are primarily vertebrate-dispersed\, interactions between ants and fallen fleshy diaspores are frequent. Our studies have focused on the services provided by ants to fallen fleshy diaspores of primarily vertebrate-dispersed trees in Brazilian Cerrado savanna and Atlantic rainforest. In this talk\, I report which ant species interact with fallen diaspores\, their contribution to seed removal\, and effects on seedling establishment and growth. Field studies by our group confirm the prevalence of interactions between ants and fallen fleshy diaspores\, revealing potential ant-derived benefits to seeds and seedlings in both biomes. Although seed dispersal distances by ants are shorter compared to birds\, our data show that fine-scale\, ant-induced seed movements may ultimately enhance plant regeneration at early developmental stages in Cerrado and Atlantic rainforest. Current human-induced fragmentation and defaunation of tropical environments suggests that short-distance dispersal by ants may become increasingly important in the dynamics of ecosystems\, since many vertebrate seed dispersers have been locally extirpated or are in decline.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:30th Anniversary of the Joint Ph.D. Program in Psychology and Women's & Gender Studies
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the joint Ph.D. program in Psychology and Women’s and Gender Studies. Starting in 1995\, the joint doctoral program began training students and established itself as the model for interdisciplinary scholarship. The founding of the Psychology/WGS joint program signaled – and continues to lead – in the growth of the field of feminist psychology.\n\nGender and the broader study of inequality has become a crucial site of education and knowledge production. As the national discourse concerning gender\, racism\, and inequality has grown contentious and even dangerous in recent years\, it is more important than ever to note this 30th anniversary milestone of a program that is dedicated to training future generations of feminist psychologists.\n\nThe 30th anniversary celebration will include: a discussion of the program’s founding and development with Dr. Abby Stewart\, a keynote by Dr. Michelle Fine on the crucial role that feminist psychology plays in contemporary scholarship and activism\, and a panel of alumni from the program will speak about their careers and the unique training they received in the UM joint program.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W6drV\n\nThis conference will bring together graduate students at the University of Michigan from all disciplines\, featuring panelists discussing papers on the theme of “New Directions\,” rethinking key ideas in scholarship pertaining to South Asia. In the last decade\, South Asia has witnessed the contours of democracy change\, the economic center of gravity shift eastwards\, and an unprecedented influx of climate and political refugees. Reflecting on recent global events\, how can we meaningfully situate South Asia in the world?\n \n OPENING REMARKS (10:00 AM – 10:15 AM)\n \n PANEL 1 (10:15 AM – 11:45 AM): Literary Critique in Context\n Aditya Bhattacharya (doctoral student in Asian Languages and Cultures)\, Sarvadamana Bharata in the *Mahābhārata* and the *Abhijñānaśākuntala*: The Puru Prince in the Changing Politics of Legitimacy\n Shreya Dutta (doctoral student in History)\, Navigating the Unfamiliar? In that same decade\, anthropologists and sociologists like Clifford Geertz and Joseph Gusfield fundamentally transformed the social sciences by newly centering attention to writing. This talk asks why Telugu South India similarly saw the emergence of new socio-political writing and documentation practices in the 1970s\, highlighting four examples: the Jana Natya Mandali’s (People’s Theatre Troupe) new documentary song-story compositions\; AP State Harijan Conference reports\; documentation produced by the RSU’s “Go to Villages Campaign”\; and the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee’s introduction of regular “fact-finding missions.”\n \n Lisa Mitchell is Professor of anthropology & history in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How Do You Conceptualize Your Time in Graduate School?: From the Practical to the Philosophical
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are moving directly from your undergraduate degree or returning after some time away\, the first term of graduate school will challenge you to expand skills critical to your success. Two of the most essential skills needed to thrive are reading and writing. This four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nThis workshop will address time management strategies\, and effective habits and motivation for early graduate school success.\n\nTime management and productivity may not seem like an exciting topic\, but harnessing concrete tactics and strategies for how to maintain autonomy and agency over your own schedule is a crucial skill in graduate school. You will find yourself juggling multiple\, and often competing\, priorities– and many of them have to do with writing… lots\, and lots of writing! This 50-minute Rackham/Sweetland workshop will address time management strategies across scales (from pomodoros to physical planners to semester and year-long planning)\, as well as considerations regarding habits and motivation. The earlier you find what works for you\, the more you can tailor your schedule to fit your life instead of the other way around!\n\nRegister at https://sessions.studentlife.umich.edu/track/event/session/96936

SUMMARY:Well-being:Heartfulness Guided Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.
