SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Documentation as Political Practice: From Contemporary Nostalgia for the Left to the New Evidentiary Politics in 1970s South India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/W6drV\n\nFive decades ago\, the Andhra Pradesh Radical Students Union launched the Go to Villages Campaign\, in which groups of university students were sent to rural Dalit settlements\, where they were tasked with documenting the conditions of life and labor. In that same decade\, anthropologists and sociologists like Clifford Geertz and Joseph Gusfield fundamentally transformed the social sciences by newly centering attention to writing. This talk asks why Telugu South India similarly saw the emergence of new socio-political writing and documentation practices in the 1970s\, highlighting four examples: the Jana Natya Mandali’s (People’s Theatre Troupe) new documentary song-story compositions\; AP State Harijan Conference reports\; documentation produced by the RSU’s “Go to Villages Campaign”\; and the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee’s introduction of regular “fact-finding missions.”\n   \n   Lisa Mitchell is professor of anthropology & history in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of *Hailing the State: Indian Democracy between Elections* (Duke University Press 2023\; Permanent Black 2023) and *Language\, Emotion\, and Politics in South India: The Making of a Mother Tongue* (Indiana University Press 2009\; Permanent Black 2010)\, which received the Edward Cameron Dimock Prize in the Indian Humanities. Her research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Wenner-Gren Foundation\, Fulbright\, European Research Council\, American Institute for Indian Studies\, and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. But as we rely on algorithms to help us write\, navigate\, and even make decisions\, several fundamental questions arise: Is AI shaping our habits\, our skills\, and our sense of self? Are we enhancing human capabilities\, or do we end up outsourcing them? Join us for a conversation with experts in AI\, psychology\, and ethics as we explore how AI may be quietly reshaping our cognition\, relationships\, and daily lives. We’ll ask where the line lies between assistance and overreliance\, and what it means to remain human in a machine-augmented world. With interactive activities developed by graduate students Snehal Prabhudesai and Yara El-Tawil.\n\nAbout the speakers:\n\nJonathan R. Brennan is an Associate Professor of Linguistics and Psychology at the Univeristy of Michigan where he directs the Computational Neurolinguistics Laboratory. His research focuses on how the human brain creates and makes sense of language\, drawing on theories and methods from linguistics\, neuroscience\, and computer science. This research is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. He recieved his PhD in 2010 from New York University and completed post-doctoral training at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He received the Early Career Award from the Society for the Neurobiology of Language in 2019 and is the author\, in 2022\, of \"Language and the Brain: A slim guide to Neurolinguistics.\n\nHrithik Ravi is an AI researcher currently working with Prof. Rada Mihalcea and Prof. Ambuj Tewari to explain why AIs can't solve basic planning and reasoning tasks. He completed his BSE in Computer Science and MS in Machine Learning\, both at the University of Michigan. His previous research mathematically proved how AI generalizes on inputs it didn't see during training\, and was published at a prestigious international AI conference. He aims to start a PhD next year\, and conduct deep research to develop a better\, rigorous understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations. Jenkins Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Artificial Intelligence Lab. SUMMARY:Other:Literature's Refuge: Rewriting the Mediterranean Borderscape
DESCRIPTION:In 1923\, the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange uprooted and swapped nearly two million Christians and Muslims\, “pacifying” the so-called Near East through ethnic partition and refugeehood. This imposition of borders not only uprooted peoples from their place in the world\; it also displaced many of their stories from a place in world literature. In Literature’s Refuge\, William Stroebel recovers and weaves together work by fugitive writers\, oral storytellers\, readers\, copyists\, editors\, and translators dispersed by this massive “unmixing” of populations and the broader border logic that it set in motion. Stroebel argues that two complementary forces emerged as a template for the Eastern Mediterranean’s cultural landscape: the modern border\, which reshuffled people through a system of filters and checkpoints\; and modern philology\, which similarly reshuffled their words and works. Philologists and publishers defined modern literature by picking apart\, extracting\, reformatting\, or dispossessing refugee and diasporic texts across a racialized borderscape—a gray zone of semi-inclusion and semi-exclusion\, semimobility and immobility.\n\nStroebel reaches into the chinks and crannies of this borderscape to reconstitute the rich textual geography between Greek Orthodoxy and Sunni Islam\, between Greek-script\, Arabic-script\, and Latin-script literary traditions at the edges of Europe and the Middle East. Doing so\, he offers a new methodological toolkit for rewriting the modern borderscapes of world literature.\n\nWilliam Stroebel is assistant professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Performance:David Zerkel\, tuba: \"Animal Ditties\"
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Professor David Zerkel\, tuba\, with:\nLiz Ames\, piano\nJason Fettig\, narrator\nTim Zerkel\, illustrator\n\nDavid and Liz will perform a recital that is thematically centered around our friends from the animal kingdom. The program will begin with Jean-Michel DeFaye's *Suite Marine*\, a depiction of various creatures from the sea. Jason Fettig\, Director of Bands at the SMTD and budding thespian\, will join us to narrate Anthony Plog's *Animal Ditties IX*\, which is a colorful work based on short poems by Ogden Nash\, widely considered to be America's Poet Laureate of Light Verse. Closing the first half will be the world premiere of *\"Woof!\"*\, by hornist\, composer\, and SMTD alum James Naigus. This piece is a clever depiction of the characteristics of seven dog breeds.\n\nThe second half is dedicated to the evening's protagonist. Written in 1960\, *Effie the Elephant\, Suite no. 1* by Alec Wider is a relatively early work for solo tuba depicting Effie in pursuit of various human endeavors: singing a lullaby\, going folk dancing\, and falling in love\, etc. David decided that Effie needed a rebrand\, and perhaps to get out a little more: we present *Effie Swipes Left*\, *Effie Goes Clubbing*\, *Effie goes to Therapy*\, *Effie Goes to the DMV*\, *Effie Adopts a Puppy*\, and *Effie Gets Tipsy*.  We're grateful to the University of Michigan for funding this commission\, and are thrilled to perform this world premiere of Jim Stephenson's *The Further Adventures of Effie the Elephant*. Jim is a wonderful composer and recovering brass player\, and this caricature is as charming as it is clever.\n\nThis will be a multimedia event\, as David's much more talented brother\, Tim\, has created an illustration for each of the 32 (short) movements on the program. \n\nThis will be a family friendly evening of storytelling and a delightfully innocuous introduction to the tuba as a solo voice.
