SUMMARY:Performance:THE NOISE CAME FROM HERE: A Homage to the Old West Side
DESCRIPTION:Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Kiana “KC” Cook and the University of Michigan Department of Dance present THE NOISE CAME FROM HERE: A Homage to the Old West Side in two unique site-specific performances. The first will be held at 7:30 PM on Saturday\, September 6th in the Dance Performance Studio Theatre (1000 Baits Dr\, Ann Arbor)\, followed by a second performance at 3:00 PM on Sunday\, September 7th at Albert Wheeler Park (200 Depot St\, Ann Arbor)* (*Rain location: Dance Performance Studio Theatre\, 1000 Baits Dr). The performance runs for one hour with no intermission. Tickets for the September 6th show are free and available at the door\, while the September 7th park performance requires no tickets. The event is ADA accessible and suitable for all ages.\n\nTHE NOISE CAME FROM HERE is a living tribute to Ann Arbor’s Historically Black “Old West Side”—a neighborhood where Black families built deep roots before systemic gentrification altered the community. The term noise in this work is both literal and symbolic: a celebration of presence and a refusal to be erased. Developed in direct conversation with the Community Leadership Council of the Dunbar Tower\, who are tied to the neighborhood’s legacy\, the performance honors their stories through dance\, sound\, and collective remembrance.\n\nThe performances feature Buff1\, Anyse\, Lobo\, Banga\, Jerwaun “Renegade” Suddun\, Rachel “Prysm” Johnson\, and student artists Ava K. Garland\, Hope Hanna-Casupang\, Gabriele Shepheard\, David Kim\, Bobby Currie\, and Erika Siblesz with original lighting design by Scott Crandall.\n\nTHE NOISE CAME FROM HERE is made possible through generous support from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s School of Music\, Theatre\, & Dance\, and the Arts Initiative. \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Gabe Lee // King Margo
DESCRIPTION:Fresh songwriting out of Nashville\n\nEqual parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller\, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country\, folk and rock. Storytelling has been an anchor of Lee's music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville\, TN\, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana\, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee\, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell\, Los Lobos\, Molly Tuttle\, and other artists who\, like him\, blurred the lines between roots-rock\, country\, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all\, he drew upon the narrative skills he'd sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal\, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn't just writing songs about himself\; he's writing songs about all of us. And maybe\, in doing so\, he can bring us a little closer together. \n\nKing Margo is a magnetic alt-country/Americana act based in Nashville\, TN. Their album “Waters Rise” is filled with what Saving Country Music proclaims as “interesting and curious textures throughout\, unique and unexpected approaches to songs\, and inspired songwriting graced by soaring performances.” The heart of the group is duo Lucciana Costa and Rachel Coats\, though they often bring their friends along for a full band experience. King Margo is a road-tested band through and through\, and they are known for putting on a high-energy show complimented by thoughtful songwriting.

SUMMARY:Performance:Unearthing Three American Composers: Hsu-Cho Violin-Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a program presented by Dr. Sookkyung Cho (piano) & Zenas Hsu (violin). This guest artist recital will feature Rogers' Sonata for Piano and Violin\, Cole's Sonata for Piano and Violin\, and two transcribed songs by Goldmark - \"Ode\" and \"I have done\, Put by the Lute\". \n\nRogers\, daughter of English composer John Barnett\, was a successful opera singer. She moved on to composing and teaching in Boston\, MA\, including serving as faculty at the New England Conservatory of Music. She also held frequent house concerts and gathered musicians and friends around her\, including Amy Beach and George Chadwick. Cole\, a native of Michigan state\, likewise led a fruitful life\, very much in the educational space - he was an advocate and leader in various compositional\, educational and musical societies\, including the Music Teachers National Association and the New York Manuscript Society. Born in New York\, Goldmark was equally known as a composer and pianist\, and notably was a student of Dvorak\, and taught Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. He served as the head of composition at the Juilliard School of Music in its early decades of founding.
