SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Sea as Medium in Early Modern Chinese Fiction
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Dr. Kile demonstrates how we might better understand Chinese early modernity through environment and experience\, categories that also open up possibilities of geographical comparison. He analyzes how the sea novels *Sanbao taijian xiyang ji* (*Record of the Sanbao Eunuch in the Western Seas*\, pub. 1597)\, *Haiyou ji* 海遊記 (*Record of a Sea Journey*\, pub. ca. early nineteenth century)\, and *Xiyi meng Xiyi meng Haiguo chunqiu* 希夷夢 海國春秋 (*A Dream of the Master of Infinitesimal Subtlety\, or A Chronicle of the Sea Kingdom*) describe travel by sea – for example\, into a luoji 落漈 (whirlpool)\, or across a ruanshui yang 軟水洋 (“soft water” sea)  – and how this fictional practice details and elaborates the perceived and imagined qualities of water. Lu Xun famously described Ming and Qing novels that abounded with super-mobile human characters as “supernatural” fiction (shenmo xiaoshuo 神魔小說). Dr. Kile departs from this foundational paradigm to look more precisely: what terms do these novels use for moving through air\, and how did that relate to water travel? The depths of the seas and the heights of the skies did not function as media for actually existing humans in the early modern period\, but in the fiction of the time\, humans could travel through the sea\, both across its surfaces and through its depths\, as well as through the sky in all its vastness.\n\nSE Kile is a scholar of early modern Chinese literature and cultural history\, focusing on the intersections of multimedia practice across a broad range of cultural objects\, from poetry to props\, from novels to gardens. An associate professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan\, Kile’s first book\, *Towers in the Void: Li Yu and Early Modern Chinese Media* (Columbia\, 2023)\, theorizes early modern mediation and entrepreneurship through Li Yu's cultural production across the areas of playwriting\, fiction writing\, garden and architectural design\, theater direction\, and body modification. His current book project argues for the relevance of the “early modern” to the study of China\, exploring how novelists synthesized scientific\, religious\, and vernacular knowledge about the world.\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. This Swap Shop is a partnership between the U-M Medical School and the Office of Campus Sustainability and Innovation. Similar to the Central Campus Swap Shop\, this space will be open once a week and by appointment. It will feature surplus lab supplies available to U-M researchers at no charge\, helping divert waste from the landfill and save researchers money. \n\nJoin us for the grand opening on Tuesday September 29 from 1-3pm and every Tuesday after to donate unneeded supplies and stock your lab with free items. Airplants will be available at the launch celebration while supplies lasts thanks to a generous donation from the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

Individual-level expectations about the path of own reservation wages are\, on average\, consistent with realized reservation wage paths. This first result validates a basic premise in many models of job search by the unemployed. Second\, individual-level reservation wages fall with unemployment duration and they fall faster when maximum unemployment benefit durations are shorter\, confirming basic implications of search models. Third\, unemployed job seekers reduce their reservation wages in line with predictions from calibrated versions of Mortensen’s (1977) canonical model\, but set initial reservation wages too high. Fourth\, reservation wages elicited early in unemployment spells are more powerful predictors of re-employment wages than are wages on the previous job\, confirming the information value of survey-elicited reservation wages.\n\n\nShort bio:\nPawel Krolikowski is a Senior Research Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. His research focuses on labor economics and macroeconomics\, with particular interests in job displacement\, wage adjustment\, and the effects of job loss. His work has been published in the American Economic Review\, American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics\, Journal of International Economics\, and other journals. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan and holds undergraduate degrees in economics and mathematical and computational science from Stanford University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Development of Quantum Sensors for Precision Measurements based on Coherent Transient Effects\, Optical Lattices\, and Atom Interferometry
DESCRIPTION:We review distinctive experimental techniques that rely on coherent transient effects\, optical lattices\, and atom interferometry that have realized varied applications including precise measurements of atomic lifetimes\, masses of dielectric particles\, atomic diffusion\, centre of mass velocity\, and gravitational acceleration. We show that the two-pulse photon echo technique is capable of realizing a precise determination of the Rb 5P_{3/2} excited state lifetime. We describe time domain techniques that track the motion of dielectric microparticles confined by free space optical tweezers and measure particle masses with a sensitivity of 10^{-16} kg. We detect the motion of Rb optical lattices in a buffer gas environment to obtain comprehensive measurements of atomic diffusion. Comparisons with theoretical calculations suggest the basis for a quantum pressure sensor capable of calibrating commercial pressure gauges. We outline a frequency domain technique for the realization of state-of-the-art velocimeters using laser cooled atoms. Finally\, we review recent results from a frequency domain echo atom interferometer that uses ultracold rubidium atoms channelled into an optical lattice to realize a gravimeter.
