These miniature artworks include figurines\, coins\, seals and seal impressions\, rattles\, and jewelry. DESCRIPTION:Curious about the birds who live on or migrate through U-M's campus?\n\nEach fall and spring\, the skies above the U.S. are home to immense seasonal movements of billions of birds. Unfortunately\, building collisions are also a major threat to birds during this journey. To improve how the Ann Arbor campus protects birds\, OCSI partners with the U-M Museum of Zoology to conduct seasonal bird collision inventories during migration. The Weiser Hall \"catwalk\" was identified as an issue during the 2025-2026 surveys. A new window mural designed by a student artist Suher Salim through an Arts Initiative sponsored contest will make this area more visible to birds\, decreasing the chances of a window collision for avian migrants and year-round campus residents.\n\nThe event and pizza availability starts at 1:00PM\, with formal remarks regarding U-M's overall bird-safety work and next steps at 1:30PM. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When Crime Pays the Victim: How Victim Policy Shaped the Carceral State
DESCRIPTION:From prisons to policing to the courts\, scholars have documented the far-reaching scope of inequality in the criminal legal system. Yet we have largely missed a critical piece of the story: the social welfare policies ostensibly intended to benefit crime victims. Existing accounts treat victims’ relationship to punishment as rhetorical\, a story of ideology or movement mobilization. My book-in-progress\, a case study of the history and implementation of victim compensation law\, shows how resources for victims are structurally tied to punishment\, as well. Liberal Democrats in the 1960s proposed victim compensation to offset their weaknesses in crime politics\, but conservatives objected to a new social program funded by “taxpayer” money. The solution\, discovered largely by accident in California\, was to finance compensation through mandatory criminal fines—making resources for victims dependent on more criminal convictions. After determining who would pay for victim benefits\, lawmakers decided whose victimization would pay. Compensation was limited to victims who reported crimes\, cooperated with police\, and were not “criminals” themselves—criteria that also penalize survivors of domestic violence. Today\, victims of color\, especially Black men\, are most likely to be denied compensation because the police perceive them as uncooperative or to blame for their victimization. The result is racially regressive redistribution: people of color disproportionately fund victim benefits through criminal fines and are more likely to be denied the benefit because they are perceived as “criminals.” I make the case for placing victim policy alongside prisons and police\, with implications for how we understand inequality\, the state\, and the political economy of punishment.

This four-part Rackham/Sweetland workshop series will showcase reading and writing practices for new graduate students that will inform your approaches to reading and writing through the course of your graduate career.\n\nThis workshop will address time management strategies\, and effective habits and motivation for early graduate school success.\n\nTime management and productivity may not seem like an exciting topic\, but harnessing concrete tactics and strategies for how to maintain autonomy and agency over your own schedule is a crucial skill in graduate school. You will find yourself juggling multiple\, and often competing\, priorities– and many of them have to do with writing… lots\, and lots of writing! SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Phasing out Dark Matter Isocurvature with Thermal Misalignment
DESCRIPTION:Thermal misalignment provides an alternative to the standard misalignment mechanism for the cosmological production of scalar dark matter. In this framework\, feeble couplings to particles in the thermal bath generate a finite-temperature potential that drives the scalar towards large field values early in the radiation era\, dynamically inducing the misalignment before the onset of scalar oscillations. As a result\, the relic abundance is controlled primarily by particle masses and couplings rather than the initial field value. As a light spectator field\, the scalar acquires inflationary fluctuations that are uncorrelated with the adiabatic curvature mode\, generically sourcing isocurvature perturbations. We show that\, unlike standard misalignment\, where light scalars are strongly constrained by cosmic microwave background bounds on dark matter isocurvature for high-scale inflation\, thermal misalignment can naturally suppress the isocurvature signal. This occurs through a novel late-time phase offset between the background zero mode and the superhorizon perturbations\, which reduces the final dark matter density contrast. Thermal misalignment therefore provides a new and generic route to isocurvature-safe scalar dark matter.
