The engaging and interactive event will feature special presentations on Jewish musical objects by visiting scholar Assaf Shelleg and Frankel Fellows Jeremiah Lockwood\, Uri Schreter\, and Tamar Sella.\n\nIndicate your interest in attending by completing this registration form: https://myumi.ch/VVg1X\n\nAssaf Shelleg (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem) studies modern and contemporary musics with a particular interest in art music written by and about Jews. Shelleg is the author of the award-winning book \"Jewish Contiguities and the Soundtrack of Israeli History\" (Oxford University Press\, 2014)\, in addition to \"Theological Stains: Art Music and the Zionist Project\" (Oxford University Press\, 2020) and \"The State of Afterness: Contemporary Music in an about Israel\" (Oxford University Press\, 2025). Previously the director of the Cherrick Center for Israel Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem between (2021-24)\, Shelleg has also served as a curator for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (2020-22)\, and a music contributor for Haaretz. His new book \"Jewish Art Music as Art Music\" is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press in 2026.\n\nJeremiah Lockwood is a scholar and musician\, working in the fields of Jewish studies\, performance studies and ethnomusicology. He is a Research Fellow at the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience at UCLA. His work engages with issues arising from peering into the archive and imagining the power of “lost” forms of expression to articulate keenly felt needs in the present. His first book\, Golden Ages: Hasidic singers and cantorial revival in the digital era\, was published in 2024 by University of California Press. Jeremiah was a 2023-24 UPenn Katz Center Fellow\, and a 2022-23 Yale Institute of Sacred Music Fellow. As 2024-25 Frankel Center Fellow he is writing his second book project\, a cultural history of the cantorial phonograph era. Lockwood has recorded more than a dozen albums over a music career that spans decades\, with his band The Sway Machinery\, the Khazones Underground\, and other projects.\n\nTamar Sella is a scholar of music and performance cultures. She is currently working on her first book\, Unsettled Sounds\, which proposes a lens for understanding the political meanings of Arab-Jewish cultural inheritance in the wake of its dislocations. Her work has been published in journals including Women and Music\, American Music\, and Ethnomusicology. Before her current position as assistant professor of ethnomusicology at the University of North Texas\, Tamar held a postdoctoral fellowship at Rice University. She holds a PhD from Harvard and a BA from UC Berkeley\, both in music.\n\nUri Schreter is an interdisciplinary musicologist\, composer\, performer\, and filmmaker whose work bridges scholarship and creative practice. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from Harvard University\, as well as an M.A. in History and a B.A. in Music from Tel Aviv University. His research focuses on twentieth-century Jewish history\, with particular attention to Yiddish language\, music\, and culture. His work has been supported by the American Musicological Society\, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture\, and the YIVO Institute\, and has appeared in the Journal of Synagogue Music and In Geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies. Beyond academia\, Schreter collaborates with artists across Jewish cultural spheres\, including Shane Baker\, Anthony Russell\, Isabel Frey\, and Judy Bressler. In 2025–2026\, he will serve as a Fellow at the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan and as the Bader Postdoctoral Fellow in Jewish History at Queen’s University.

DESCRIPTION:Insect Encounters brings together two distinct bodies of video artwork by artist and filmmaker Catherine Chalmers: the *American Cockroach* series and the *Leafcutters* quadrilogy. The five films of *American Cockroach* capture a surreal and at times hauntingly anthropomorphic view of the contemporary cockroach\, using intricate set design and immersive macro cinematography to trace a path from the creature’s chaotic life in the wild to a bizarre yet equally hostile existence inside modern kitchens and bathrooms. Meanwhile\, the four Leafcutters videos are an unusual and mesmerizing collaboration with millions of wild ants\, filmed in Panama and Costa Rica. The series focuses on four supposedly unique human traits – language\, ritual\, war\, and art – and the narrative themes aim to blur the boundaries between human society and leafcutter ants\, a species described as “the most complex social creatures other than humans.”\n\nThe films will be followed by a Q & A and a conversation with artist Catherine Chalmers\, Ann Arbor Film Festival Director Leslie Raymond\, and Curator Amanda Krugliak.\n\nChalmer's exhibition* Conifer Trees\, Bark Beetles\, and Fire* is on view at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery Sept. 11 - Oct. 24. DESCRIPTION:Join the Quantitative Methods in the Social Science (QMSS) Program for a resume-building workshop with a special focus on highlighting & marketing your data-related skills from QMSS (and other!) courses. \n\nFirst\, students will receive a rundown of general advice on how to structure a resume\, how a resume is different from a curriculum vitae (CV)\, and some dos and dont's and tips and tricks for using them in applications. Then\, we will dive deeper into specific advice for how to market data and analytical skills taught in QMSS courses including QMSS 201\, 301\, and 451 and how to supplement previous and current work/related experiences with data-related points. \n\nIn the second half of the workshop\, students will work in real-time on their own resumes to edit their skills and experience sections based on the workshop's content and ask questions one-on-one with the presenter about their specific resume\, experiences\, and/or goals.\n\nFollowing the workshop\, participants will have an opportunity to send their resume in and receive written feedback from the presenter and/or senior QMSS Peer Mentors as well as make one-on-one appointments with the presenter or QMSS Peer Mentors to discuss further.\n\nStudents are encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet to take notes\, work on (or create!) your current resume\, and/or ask specific questions during the workshop. Washington St. Ann Arbor\, MI 48104\n\nAbout the book: \nNatalie Zemon Davis and Elizabeth Douvan’s Operation Mind is a body of evidence\, a prophetic warning\, and a call to action about the urgency of doing all we can to prevent thought control in America. In 1952\, this meticulously researched pamphlet documented the House Committee on Un-American Activities’ attacks and impact. The HUAC abused its charge to intimidate and silence academics\, union members\, social critics\, scientists\, artists\, teachers\, political opponents\, rabbis and other religious leaders\, to make them appear suspect and “un-American” in the eyes of the American people.\n\nThe 2025 reprint of Operation Mind offers a foreword by comparatist Silke-Maria Weineck and an essay by historian Alan Wald connecting Operation Mind’s history of McCarthyism with present-day attacks on academic freedom.\n\nSilke-Maria Weineck is the Grace Lee Boggs Professor of Comparative Literature and German Studies at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. She is interested in figurations of power\, be they literary\, cultural\, or institutional.\n\nAlan Wald is H. Chandler Davis Collegiate Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. DESCRIPTION:August 18 - October 24\, 2025Exhibition Reception: September 11\, 3-5 p.m.\n\"In their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students 'develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.' Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now? At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \nUntil now\, the classroom studios and review rooms have been the only place to catch a glimpse of the art and design work resulting from this pivotal course. Last year\, Associate Dean for Academic Programs Rebecca Strzelec proposed something new: an exhibition installed throughout the Art &amp\; Architecture Building during the summer that would celebrate Second Year Studio work and help to welcome the community back in the Fall. This inaugural 2025 Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases our rising third-years and transfer students\, and invites first-years and other newcomers to explore both the building\, and the creative possibilities ahead.
