SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Memory and Memorial Culture Across Central Eurasia Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How has and does memory – familial\, national\, or imperial – impact understandings of the Centra Eurasia’s past by defining\, changing\, and erasing topics of investigation? How does memory – through recollections\, reminisces\, and retellings – shift\, change\, and morph through different historical periods and conjunctures? How might we consider “the sites of memory” – be they shrines\, museums\, gallery spaces – as enacting a shaping function onto the minds and memories of their visitors? How does the memory of events – of the Qing conquest of the Dzungars\, of the Andijan uprising of 1898\, of Tajikistan’s Civil War – prove capable creating\, defining\, and delineating group identities? \n\nThis workshop\, presented by the U-M Department of History and the Central Eurasian Studies Society\, will be held on October 19-20\, 2026. Graduate students and early career scholars (PhD conferred in the last 5 years) will share their works-in-progress to receive critical feedback.\n\nThank you to our sponsors: Center for Russian\, East European\, & Eurasian Studies\, Department of History\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, Global Islamic Studies Center\, Humanities Institute\, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies\, LSA Graduate Student Funding\, Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The physical exhibit is accompanied by a virtual component that encourages audiences to engage with each mother's birth story.\n\nThe Lane Hall Exhibit Space is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Michigan. \n\nBlack Birth Joy\nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 – Friday\, January 15\, 2027\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\, 204 S State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\nOpen M–F\, 9AM–5PM

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Diana Velazquez Dissertation Defense
DESCRIPTION:Lake sediments act as archives of environmental change\, preserving geochemical signals that can be linked to local and global shifts in biogeochemical cycling throughout Earth’s history. Additionally\, with approximately half as much organic carbon buried in lakes globally as in the world’s oceans\, lake sediments are critical carbon reservoirs. However\, prolonged lake stratification due to increasingly warming climate conditions\, is resulting in extended periods of low-oxygen\, hypoxic\, conditions in lakes. Because hypoxic lake conditions favor oxygen-free microbial metabolisms\, they can alter the mechanisms controlling sedimentary carbon sequestration. While anthropogenic influences on freshwater environments are profound\, they represent only the most recent shifts in water column oxygenation. Earth’s history is marked by fluctuating oxygen conditions\, transitioning from an anoxic atmosphere to an oxygenated one since 2.45 billion years ago. To understand modern shifts in carbon cycling and to better understand environmental change recorded in ancient lake sediments\, it is imperative to trace lake organic matter sources\, sinks\, and burial mechanisms. Given that organic matter can be broken down and reworked during its transport and burial to sediments\, this dissertation investigates how we can reliably capture original source signals and reconstruct ancient lake conditions.\n\nBecause our ability to reliably reconstruct past aquatic environments is determined by whether or not sediments faithfully record original source signals\, Chapter 2 examines methodological approaches for the collection of organic matter in freshwaters. In this chapter\, I use laboratory experiments to test how effectively chemical treatments preserve the original geochemical signatures of organic matter from a freshwater pond. Recommendations for the use of chemical treatments depend on the desired measurements and the length of the storage period. Notably\, I find that freshwater organic matter retains its original geochemical signatures in the absence of chemical treatment over short periods which offers a low-toxicity and cost-effective alternative to methods commonly used to preserve marine material.\n\nIn Chapter 3\, I apply methods from the previous chapter to identify organic matter sources and preservation processes in a modern hypoxic environment\, Middle Island Sinkhole in Lake Huron. I integrate bulk and compound-specific geochemical approaches to understand sedimentary organic matter large scale and molecular-level transformations. I find that bulk measurements are often complicated by seasonal variability and microbial decomposition. Compound-specific approaches\, however\, resolve original source signals that can be valuable when analyzing sedimentary records of ancient lake systems. \n\nUltimately\, I expand my understanding of organic matter preservation from a single low-oxygen site to lakes\, globally in Chapter 4. By compiling lake sedimentary geochemical data from lakes worldwide and their water column oxygen conditions\, I establish geochemical patterns related to oxygen. I use modern lake sedimentary patterns to trace the evolution of nitrogen microbial metabolisms that evolved from Earth’s oxygenation throughout the past 3.2 billion years. Beyond tracking changes in oxygen\, lake sediments also provide insight into the chemistry of ancient lake waters.\n\nCollectively\, the work in this dissertation emphasizes lake sediments as natural recorders of local and global environmental transformations\, particularly related to shifts in Earth’s oxygenation. This dissertation adds to the refinement of methodological approaches needed to reliably trace organic matter source-to-sink dynamics under a changing climate.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Grand Vision
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Journalist Peter Beinart: Antisemitism\, Islamophobia\, and American Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Journalist Peter Beinart’s new book\, \"Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning\,\" is about \"the stories Jews tell ourselves that blind us to Palestinian suffering. It's about how we came to value a state\, Israel\, above the lives of all the people who live under its control.\"\n\nOnce an outspoken defender of Israel\, Beinart now challenges \"the idea that it [Israel] can be both Jewish and democratic\" and confronts the Jewish narrative of persecution\, victimhood\, and the Holocaust that have been deployed to justify mass slaughter and starvation in Gaza. He explores a future where Israeli Jews have the right to equality\, not supremacy\, and in which Jewish and Palestinian safety are not mutually exclusive but intertwined.\n\nPeter Beinart is a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the CUNY Center\, with degrees from Yale and Oxford\, and and is the editor-at-large of Jewish Currents. He is an Opinion Columnist for The New York Times.

SUMMARY:Performance:Bonnie \"Prince\" Billy w/sg Laurel Premo
DESCRIPTION:We Are Together Again\n\nHowever dimly we perceive it\, we are living through a change of worlds. The one we were born into is slipping away\, reshaped and denuded by human action. What remains is the question of what we will carry forward\, and the manner in which we refuse to surrender ourselves. Will Oldham’s new album\, We Are Together Again\, feels like an answer to these questions. \n\nIn Oldham’s songs - and in the circle of others who’ve gathered beneath the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy on this endeavor - friendship\, community\, and the stubborn joy of making art with others become a means of persistence. This isn’t to say that the record is a denial of collapse\, which would be delusion\, so much as that models defiance by remaining fully human\, fully joyful\, in a world with a diminishing horizon... I’m talking about Oldham’s record\, to be sure\, but I think the answers he suggests in We Are Together Again speak to the only meaningful choices any of us can make at this point in all of the agonizing everything. \n\n\nA sense of human beauty runs through everything here. Each voice remains distinct\, yet folds into something larger. We Are Together Again doesn’t resolve fear\; it meets it with harmony. It’s a record about the stubborn miracle of accompaniment. It’s about how we keep asking\, and how\, so long as there are voices to ask together\, the asking itself becomes a kind of hope.
