DESCRIPTION:Presenter Bio:\n\nBrad Sturt is an assistant professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. His research uses the methodologies of stochastic programming and robust optimization to develop solutions for operational problems in business and government. Recent applications have included election security\, data-driven assortment planning\, and high-dimensional options pricing. His research has received several recognitions\, including the Roger J-B Wets Junior Researcher Best Paper Prize in Stochastic Programming\, second place in the INFORMS Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) Paper Competition\, and second place in the INFORMS George Nicholson Student Paper Competition. Outside of academia\, he is a co-founder of BallotIQ\, an elections administration startup based in Ann Arbor.\n\nAbstract:\n\nFor more than a century\, election officials across the United States have inspected voting machines before elections using a procedure called Logic and Accuracy Testing (LAT). This procedure consists of officials casting a test deck of ballots into each machine and confirming the machine produces the expected vote totals. In this talk\, I will bring a scientific perspective to LAT by introducing a robust optimization approach to designing test decks with rigorous security guarantees. To facilitate deployment at scale\, we develop a practically efficient custom algorithm for solving our robust optimization problems based on the cutting-plane method. In partnership with the Michigan Bureau of Elections\, we retrospectively applied our approach to the November 2022 election\, which revealed that our test decks would have required only 1.2% more ballots than the current practice. Our approach has since been deployed by Michigan in real-world elections to improve election security and increase public confidence.

DESCRIPTION:Creating a Cellular “Google Map” of the Brain with Engineered Spatial Sequencing Technologies\nAbstract:\nCells are not independent\; they communicate and work synergistically in the brain. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on bulk assays\, novel spatial technologies preserve the tissue's architecture at near single-cell resolution\, allowing for more precise functional interpretation of the cell types and states. In this talk\, I will introduce spatial proteomics and spatial epigenetics\, two leading methods that enable in situ detection of proteins and open chromatin. Compared to spatial transcriptomics\, spatial proteomics directly addresses key challenges in visualizing cellular morphology and evaluating whether RNAs are the best proxies for proteins. I will discuss how these approaches advance our understanding of brain function and disease\, particularly in psychiatric disorders and traumatic brain injury.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Powering the Intelligence Economy: Energy Solutions for Robots\, Data Centers\, and Disconnected Grids
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe intelligence economy—the emerging system in which machines\, data centers\, and grids embody and deliver intelligence into everyday life—will only thrive if we can solve its energy challenges. On the embodied side\, autonomous systems such as aircraft\, robots\, and heavy machines demand energy densities far beyond today’s lithium-ion batteries. While animals store energy at nearly 9 kWh/kg and operate continuously by consuming new fuel\, robots typically run for only a fraction of the day on batteries with less than 0.3 kWh/kg. On the infrastructure side\, data centers and compute are limited by the availability of energy sources\, yet the disconnected and rapidly growing electrical grids in the United States require new ways to move energy across space and time. More than 2\,000 GW of generation and storage projects are currently stalled awaiting transmission interconnections. Building new power lines is costly and slow\, but the nation’s transportation network could connect grids by carrying high–energy-density electrochemical fuels that are charged in regions of oversupply\, shipped or piped to areas of demand\, and converted back into electricity at lower cost and with greater flexibility than new transmission infrastructure.\n\nOur research addresses both challenges with a common approach: developing electrochemically rechargeable fuels and advanced metal–air systems that use separate charging and discharging devices to unlock higher energy densities\, lower costs\, and leverage domestic supply chains. For robots and vehicles\, we demonstrate bio-inspired designs—emulsion electrolytes that act like “artificial blood” to deliver oxygen with faster kinetics than saturated electrolytes\, and mechanically rechargeable metal–air cells that mimic digestion—to extend endurance well beyond lithium-ion limits. For grid applications\, we show that organosulfur-based electrochemical fuels can deliver >850 Wh/kg at relevant power densities\, be recharged with >98% efficiency\, and be rapidly refilled in under two minutes\, enabling not only continuous machine operation but also “chemical wires” that transfer power between grids. These approaches rely on earth-abundant\, low-CO2 materials and existing logistics networks\, offering a scalable\, sustainable path forward.\n\nBy unifying advances in robot endurance and grid connectivity under the shared framework of the intelligence economy\, this talk will highlight how new electrochemical paradigms can power both the machines that embody intelligence and the infrastructure that moves it.\n\nBiography:\nJames Pikul is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and serves on the Microsystems Advisory Council for DARPA. He earned his B.S. (2009)\, M.S. (2011)\, and Ph.D. (2015) in Mechanical Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign\, where he was a DOE Office of Science Graduate Research Fellow and Carver Fellow. Before joining Wisconsin\, he was on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania.\n\nJames leads a research group that develops new energy storage concepts\, multifunctional materials\, and soft robotic systems to power the emerging intelligence economy. His team has contributed to advances in electrochemistry and soft matter physics\, demonstrating batteries with record power and energy densities\, soft actuators and sensors that enhance robotic perception and mobility\, and electrochemical approaches for adaptive metals\, including room-temperature self- repair. These advances provide new pathways to increase the endurance\, mobility\, and intelligence of autonomous systems.\n\nJames is a Moore Inventor Fellow\, Scialog Fellow\, TMS Early Career Faculty Fellow\, and has received the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award\, the NSF CAREER Award\, and the 3M Non-tenured Faculty Award\, among others.

DESCRIPTION:Jayatee’s Title: Warm chemistry in planet-forming disks\n\nAbstract: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) revolutionizes our understanding of planet-forming disks\, offering unprecedented insights into their physical and chemical structures. Here\, I present the results from JWST MIRI/MRS spectra of disks around very low-mass stars known to have a higher occurrence rate of planets\, revealing dust features and\, a rich array of large molecules such as C6H6\, C4H2\, C3H4\, C2H6\, HC3N\, C2H2\, CO2 etc. and isotopologues such as 13CCH2 and 13CO2. By leveraging the recently developed extended hydrocarbon chemical network that can form simple aromatics such as C6H6 and using the thermo-chemical disk models\, I check if these molecular detections are consistent with our astro-chemical understanding in the high-density inner regions of the disks. As we predominantly observe hydrocarbons in the disk\, varying the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio leads to the formation of these detected species in the surface layers of the disk. There still are unidentified spectral features in the spectra that led me to employ these models to predict additional detectable species. We need the spectrum for these predicted species to confirm or rule out their presence. I then use thermo-chemical disk models to place the slab model results into a larger context and identify the 2D geometry conducive to those conditions. My study paves the way for a deeper understanding of the spectra. It provides new constraints for planet formation in disks around VLMS and highlights the instrumental role of JWST in providing insights into the origins of planetary systems.\n\n\nYisheng’s Title: Magnetic Pressure Driven Outflows: Lightly Loaded Jets and Dense Disk Winds in Protostellar Systems \n\nAbstract: Jets and outflows in young stellar objects (YSOs) play a critical role in connecting the inner disk environment with large-scale observables\, yet their launching mechanisms remain poorly understood. Observations of both symmetric and asymmetric\, including uni-polar\, jets raise important questions about the physical processes that govern jet morphology. To investigate these processes\, we conduct non-ideal MHD simulations that naturally give rise to three distinct outflow components: (1) a fast\, magnetically driven jet along the rotation axis\; (2) an MRI-active turbulent disk wind at intermediate cylindrical radii\; and (3) a slower\, laminar disk wind at larger radii. We find that jets are lightly mass-loaded and launched by toroidal magnetic pressure\, bridging features of both classical magneto-centrifugal and magnetic tower models. Crucially\, whether MRI-driven turbulent winds fill the polar region and suppress jet launching in one hemisphere\, thereby producing asymmetric or uni-polar jets\, depends on the interplay between the stellar magnetosphere and the large-scale disk magnetic field. In cases where the disk field dominates\, jets are more likely to be one-sided\; conversely\, a strong\, rotating stellar magnetosphere suppresses polar MRI activity and facilitates the launching of symmetric\, bipolar jets. This sensitivity to magnetic field topology provides an observational handle for probing the relative roles of stellar and disk magnetism.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DE Seminar: From Schrödinger to diffusion- speckle formation of light in random media and the Gaussian conjecture
DESCRIPTION:A well-known conjecture in physical literature states that high frequency waves propagating over long distances through turbulence eventually become complex Gaussian distributed. The intensity of such wave fields then follows an exponential law\, consistent with speckle formation observed in physical experiments. Though fairly well-accepted and intuitive\, this conjecture is not entirely supported by any detailed mathematical derivation. In this talk\, I will discuss some recent results demonstrating the Gaussian conjecture in a weak-coupling regime of the paraxial approximation.\n \nThe paraxial approximation is a high frequency approximation of the Helmholtz equation\, where backscattering is ignored. This takes the form of a Schrödinger equation with a random potential and is often used to model laser propagation through turbulence. In particular\, I will describe a diffusive scaling where the limiting probability distribution of the wavefield is completely described by a second moment which follows an anomalous diffusion. The proof relies on the asymptotic closeness of statistical moments of the wavefield under the paraxial approximation\, its white noise limit and the complex Gaussian distribution itself.  An additional stochastic continuity/tightness criterion allows to show the convergence of these distributions over spaces of Hölder-continuous functions. Numerical simulations illustrate theoretical results.\n \nThis is joint work with Guillaume Bal.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - How does density dependence affect evolutionary rescue\, and how does an evolutionary ecologist shift university culture and climate? A tale of two roles
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - I’ll present on two topics. First\, I’ll discuss experiments on evolutionary rescue\, which is adaptation that enables a population to persist and grow following detrimental environmental change. Using Tribolium beetles as a model system\, we evaluated how density dependence reduce the probability of rescue\, but do not inhibit adaptation of populations that persist. Second\, I’ll discuss Colorado State University’s NSF ADVANCE grant\, and how as an evolutionary ecologist I’ve been able to shed light on university data to reveal low retention of faculty women of color relative to other groups of faculty members. I’ll then discuss the kinds of programming we have put in place to improve recruitment and retention and overall success of faculty members to reduce the gaps the data reveal\, and how we used the ADVANCE grant to leverage university resources and structures in ways that should have lasting impact.
