SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Annual Borka Tomljenović Lecture. Reading through the Double Archival Grain: Yugoslav Socialist Humanitarianism and its Whiteness
DESCRIPTION:For the 2026 Annual Borka Tomljenović Lecture\, Professor Čarna Brković will consider different forms of affective engagement with humanitarian activities in socialist Yugoslavia\, including irony and nostalgia. Ironic engagement assumes that Yugoslav solidarity with formerly colonized populations during the Cold War was empty rhetoric\, driven by a pragmatic desire to establish the country as a significant player on the geopolitical stage. Nostalgic engagement\, by contrast\, is shaped by the belief that Yugoslavs were motivated by an honest ideological commitment to solidarity and anti-racism that ultimately placed them on the “right side” of history. Both ironic and nostalgic engagements with socialist humanitarianism evaluate the past through contemporary ideas about solidarity\, socialism\, capitalism\, and their interrelations.\n\nTo understand socialist humanitarianism on its own terms\, Brković proposes reading it through the double grain of state socialism and the end of history. Such an analytical approach illuminates the role of racial socialism—socialist ideologies of “race” and local racial projects—and its interactions with global racial hierarchies\, showing how these ideologies were shaped by particular value constellations.\n\nBy discussing a 1961 humanitarian initiative of the Yugoslav Red Cross that brought sixty children and young people from the Congo to Tivat\, Montenegro\, this talk sheds light on the workings of socialist whiteness. This was not a colourist project but rather a normative regime of political value with two key characteristics: it ascribed superiority to Yugoslavs on the basis of their greater socialist experience\, and it overlooked present problems in favour of a future in which “race” would no longer matter.\n\nČarna Brković is professor of cultural studies and European ethnology at the University of Mainz. Dr. Brković has a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester and a BA in Ethnology and Anthropology from the University of Belgrade. In her European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant “Racial Socialism” (2026-2031) as well as in her book Realigning Humanitarianism in the Balkans: From Cold War Politics to Neoliberal Ethics (Indiana University Press\, 2026)\, she studies historical projects of integrating the world differently\, such as socialist humanitarianism and Europeanization.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at CREES@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:John Santos Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A multimedia presentation by historian John Santos.\n\nThe distinct musical traditions of Cuba and Puerto Rico are joined at the hip for good reason. Their shared colonial experience of genocide\, slavery and US intervention created a similar foundation for musical resistance and self-expression that resulted in iconic\, internationally renowned musical forms such as Salsa and Latin Jazz as well as lesser-known forms.\n\nGUEST SPEAKER BIO\n\nSeven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist\, US Artists Fontanals Fellow\, and 2013-2014 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director\, JOHN SANTOS\, is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. Born in San Francisco\, California\, November 1\, 1955\, he was raised in the Puerto Rican and Cape Verdean traditions of his family\, surrounded by music. The fertile musical environment of the San Francisco Bay Area shaped his career in a unique way. His studies of Afro-Latin music have included several trips to New York\, Puerto Rico\, Cuba\, Brazil and Colombia. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music\, and has earned much respect and recognition as a prolific performer\, composer\, teacher\, writer\, radio programmer\, and record/event producer whose career has spanned five decades. He illuminates and illustrates the historical and evolving intersection of Jazz and traditional Afro-Latin music.\n\nPresented by the Center for World Performances Studies with support from the Residential College and the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance Percussion Program.\n\n*If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies at cwps.information@umich.edu at least one week in advance of this event. SUMMARY:Performance:Mazurka: Dance of a Polish Soul\, Voice of the World
DESCRIPTION:The mazurka\, one of Poland’s most distinctive musical dance forms\, continues to inspire composers far beyond its traditional origins. While often associated with Frédéric Chopin\, this recital explores the broader and evolving story of the mazurka through the voices of both celebrated and lesser-known composers from Poland and around the world.\n\nThe program presents a diverse collection of works that reveal how composers have transformed this Polish dance into a vehicle for artistic expression\, cultural identity\, and contemporary creativity. It includes mazurkas by Karol Szymanowski\, whose innovative language expanded the genre in the twentieth century\, as well as works by composers inspired by Chopin’s legacy\, including Zygmunt Stojowski\, Julian and Nathalie Janotha. The program also features mazurkas by lesser-known Polish composers such as Wojciech Kilar and Mikołaj Piotr Górecki\, whose individual musical voices offer new perspectives on the evolution of the genre. Special attention is given to the contributions of female composers\, whose works enrich the mazurka’s continuing legacy.\n\nAlongside these historical works\, the program features newly commissioned mazurkas created for the international 21st Mazurkas project—a visionary artistic initiative conceived\, developed\, and realized by pianist Anna Kijanowska. Bringing together composers from Poland\, Europe\, North America\, South America\, and New Zealand\, the project presents the mazurka as a living international form. These contemporary works demonstrate the remarkable adaptability of the genre\, blending elements of folk tradition\, personal expression\, modern compositional techniques\, and diverse cultural influences. Each composer offers a unique perspective\, transforming the mazurka into a global musical language while maintaining its connection to its Polish roots. Among the contributors is Matthew Bengtson\, Associate Professor of Piano Literature at the University of Michigan\, whose commissioned mazurka forms part of this international collection.\n\nAll of these new works were written especially for pianist Anna Kijanowska and recorded on the award-winning DUX album 21st Mazurkas (DUX 2149). The recording received the Platinum Prize at the Golden European Piano Awards 2025\, together with the Special Regional Representative Award (Cieszyn\, Poland) and the Artist of the Month distinction.\n\nThrough a dialogue between historical voices and contemporary creators\, *Mazurka: Dance of a Polish Soul\, Voice of the World* celebrates the mazurka as a living art form—one that continues to evolve across generations\, cultures\, and continents\, while remaining deeply connected to Poland’s rich musical heritage.\n\n*This event is supported in part by the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia\, and partially funded by a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage\, Republic of Poland.*
