SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DAAS Faculty Forum with Justine Davis\, Assistant Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies and Political Science
DESCRIPTION:Faculty members of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies discuss their projects\, research\, and publications to share their work and interests. The DAAS Faculty Forum will be held monthly on Wednesdays at noon.\n\nOctober 21: Justine Davis\, Assistant Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\; Assistant Professor of Political Science \nDual Citizenship & Dueling Loyalties: Perceptions of Politicians from the Diaspora\n\nAbstract:\n\nHow do citizens perceive and respond to dual citizenship and diaspora policies\, particularly pertaining to politicians who have ties to multiple countries? This project entails a multi-country survey and experimental design in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia on public opinion about dual citizenship. Given the growing political and economic influence of the African diaspora\, the rights and roles of dual citizens have become increasingly contentious. Using a descriptive survey and a conjoint experiment\, we explore when and why citizens support dual citizenship\, how they respond to diaspora politicians\, and how they view the role dual citizens and the broader diaspora play in the economic and democratic development of their countries.\n\nBio:\n\nI am an assistant professor jointly appointed in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) and the Political Science Department at the University of Michigan. Prior to this position\, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan and a UC Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California\, San Diego. I received my Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California\, Berkeley. \n\nI study comparative politics and political behavior\, focusing on sub-Saharan Africa. In particular\, I am interested in the challenges of democratization efforts in post-conflict settings and weakly institutionalized democracies.\n\nMy book\, No Neutral Ground\, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press\, examines the role of non-governmental organizations in fostering democracy after civil war.\n\nMy research has been supported by the Carnegie Corporation\; the National Science Foundation\; the West Africa Research Association\; the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley\; and the Center for African Studies\, the Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study\, and the Institute for International Studies at UC Berkeley. My work has been featured on the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage and published or forthcoming in African Affairs\, Comparative Political Studies\, Journal of Conflict Resolution\, Journal of Politics\, Party Politics\, Political Behavior\, and PS: Political Science & Politics.\n\n At the University of Michigan\, I am an associate at the African Studies Center and a faculty associate at the Center for Political Studies. I am a member of Evidence and Governance in Politics\, a research associate at the Center on the Politics of Development\, a co-coordinator of the Midwest Workshop in Empirical Political Science\, a Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellow\, and an APSA Diversity Fellow. I was also part of the 2023 Inaugural Class for The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS)\, Summer Institute on Diversity Science\, at Stanford University. \n\nPrior to obtaining my Ph.D.\, I completed a Fulbright-Clinton Public Policy Fellowship in Côte d’Ivoire. I hold a dual-language Master's degree in International Affairs\, Conflict Resolution and Civil Society Development from the American University of Paris and the Université de Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Originally from North Carolina\, I graduated from Elon University with a Bachelor's degree in International Studies\, African concentration.\n\nOverall\, I have experience living and working in France\, Côte d'Ivoire\, Ghana\, Senegal\, and I have also conducted fieldwork in Zambia and Benin. \n\n\nNovember 18: Martin Murray\, Adjunct Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\; Professor of Urban and Regional Planning\, Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Still Shaking the Table
DESCRIPTION:Identity-center professionals work at the intersection of student support\, advocacy\, education\, and institutional change. As higher education becomes increasingly politicized and constrained\, these practitioners must navigate evolving student needs\, institutional pressures\, and challenges to diversity\, equity\, and inclusion while sustaining their own well-being.\n\nDrawing from Still Shaking the Table: Activism\, Unity\, and Supporting Students\, this webinar explores the changing role of identity-center practitioners as advocates\, coalition-builders\, educators\, and institutional leaders. Co-editors Jonathan A. McElderry and Stephanie Hernandez Rivera will join contributing authors Susan Harper\, Heather D. Shea\, and Brandi Wells-Stone to consider how practitioners build cross-campus partnerships\, respond to political and organizational challenges\, and support students with diverse and intersecting identities.\n\nThe conversation will examine strategies for sustaining justice-oriented leadership through critical hope\, collective care\, and intentional reflection. Panelists will also discuss what colleges and universities must do to move beyond performative or symbolic commitments toward meaningful institutional support for identity centers\, their staff\, and the students they serve.\n\nJoin us for a timely conversation about activism\, coalition-building\, institutional responsibility\, and the future of identity-center work in higher education.\n\n\nModerators:\n\n\nJonathan A. McElderry\, PhD\n\nJonathan A. McElderry\, PhD (he/him)\, is a nationally recognized scholar\, speaker\, and higher education leader whose work centers on advancing student success\, inclusive excellence\, and organizational transformation. He serves as dean of student inclusive excellence\, assistant professor of education\, and acting director of the master of higher education program at Elon University. Most recently\, he completed his term as the 86th president of ACPA–College Student Educators International.\n\nA first-generation college graduate\, McElderry’s scholarship and professional practice focus on the experiences of historically marginalized students\, leadership in higher education\, mentoring\, and belonging. He has authored more than 20 scholarly publications and co-edited two books examining antiracism and the experiences of identity-center practitioners. Through his scholarship\, national leadership\, and commitment to mentoring the next generation of higher education professionals\, McElderry continues to influence policy\, practice\, and the future of the profession.\n\n\nStephanie Hernandez Rivera\, PhD\n\nStephanie Hernandez Rivera\, PhD (she/ella)\, is a Puerto Rican woman and race-gender higher education scholar and educator. She is an assistant professor in Elon University’s Master of Arts in Higher Education Program and the endowed Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education Emerging Professor. Hernandez Rivera has experience as a higher education practitioner and administrator working to advance equity and inclusion in various capacities.\n\nUsing critical cultural methodologies\, her research examines how equity and inclusion work is operationalized in higher education\, the resistance strategies of students\, faculty\, and staff\, and how oppressive systems of power emerge at the micro and meso levels to affect the psychological well-being of communities of Color. Her scholarship has appeared in the Journal of Higher Education\, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education\, Journal of Women and Gender in Higher Education\, and The Journal of Negro Education\, among other publications.\n\n\nContributing Authors:\n\n\nSusan Harper\, PhD\n\nSusan Harper\, PhD\, serves as co-curricular student development director in Multicultural Student Affairs at Iowa State University\, where she designs curricula and developmental experiences for students in the George Washington Carver Scholastic Leadership Scholarship and First Cyclone Scholarship learning communities.\n\nHarper previously served as director of the Center for LGBTQIA+ Student Success at Iowa State until the center’s closure in 2024. As a scholar-practitioner\, her work focuses on support for historically excluded student populations\, leadership\, controversy with civility\, spiritual wellness\, and dialogue across religious difference.\n\nShe holds a PhD in cultural anthropology and an MA in anthropology from Southern Methodist University\, as well as an MA in multicultural women’s and gender studies from Texas Woman’s University. Her recent publications include Feminist Witchcraft and Doing Ethnography\, co-authored with Jessica Smartt Gullion.\n\n\nHeather D. Shea\, PhD\n\nHeather D. Shea\, PhD (she/her)\, is the director of Pathways Persistence Programs in Undergraduate Education at Michigan State University\, where she leads a unit of five academic cohort programs focused on student persistence\, high-impact practices\, and first-generation student success.\n\nWith more than 25 years of experience as a practitioner-scholar\, Shea advances student success\, equity\, and belonging through cohort-based programs and holistic support. She previously served for more than a decade as director of two campus-based women’s and gender equity centers\, where she led initiatives designed to foster inclusive campus climates and intersectional coalitions.\n\nHer scholarship and practice focus on cultivating critical hope for the future of higher education through communities of mattering. She is a host and co-founder of the Student Affairs NOW podcast and a past president of ACPA–College Student Educators International.\n\n\nBrandi Wells-Stone\, PhD\n\nBrandi Wells-Stone\, PhD (she/her)\, is director of African American Student Services and special advisor to the president on African American Affairs at the University of New Mexico\, where she also serves as an adjunct faculty member in Africana Studies.\n\nA scholar-practitioner with more than a decade of experience in Black Cultural Center work\, Wells-Stone’s research and practice examine Black Cultural Center leadership and space through decolonial and Black feminist lenses. Her work considers how institutional structures\, care practices\, and spatial politics shape both cultural-center staff and students’ experiences of belonging in higher education.\n\n***\n\nThis is the second of two conversations exploring the experiences and evolving roles of identity-center practitioners in higher education.\n\nThe series begins on October 7 with Shaking the Table: Centering the Voices of Identity Center Practitioners.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NACADA Webinar: Deconstructing Burnout in Advising
DESCRIPTION:Join the ACUM Wellness Committee to watch and discuss the NACADA Webinar: Deconstructing Burnout in Advising. This will be an in person event hosted in the Honors Lounge - 1330 Mason Hall - on Wednesday\, October 21\, from 2pm EST - 3:20pm EST.This session will explore\, unpack\, and deconstruct burnout through perspectives and experiences of advisors from various geographic and institutional settings. Advising work may be close to our hearts\, but there’s a limit to how much space and energy one can give when passion\, a student focus\, and self-care are inadequate to prevent burnout. Framed by the 12 stages of burnout and the concept of emotional labor\, panelists will examine how higher education fosters certain types of burnout that impact advisors and the profession. Participants will be encouraged to consider their spheres of influence as advisors\, managers\, and colleagues as we seek to interrupt\, intervene\, and reframe burnout to address its root causes and learn how the profession can support advisors in this era of change.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Small Moments of the Sensitivity of Polynomial Threshold Functions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Polynomial threshold functions (PTFs) are a central class of Boolean functions with important roles in learning theory and approximation. A fundamental question is to understand the complexity of their behavior under small perturbations of the input. On the Boolean cube\, this is captured by notions such as sensitivity\, average sensitivity\, and Boolean surface area. In this talk\, we revisit a recursive approach used to derive bounds for the average sensitivity and Boolean surface area of PTFs and obtain a polylogarithmic bound for small moments of their sensitivity. We will also explore the interplay between Fourier expansion and induction on scales from harmonic analysis\, random averaging from probability\, and decision trees and regularization from combinatorics.
