SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Growing large SMBH at early times with dark atoms
DESCRIPTION:Observations by JWST have indicated the presence of large SMBH within the first 500 Myr of the universe. The existence of these black holes require the BH seeds to grow faster than allowed by the Eddington limit. In this talk I will consider the growth of these black holes if a small component of dark matter was dissipative in nature. Using dark atoms as a concrete example of dissipative dark matter\, we show that it is possile to grow large BHs in the early universe through accretion of dark atoms or by starting out with larger seeds.

During this seminar\, you will learn which modes are feasible in which contexts with a particular focus on mobile phone surveys.\n\nDr. Abigail (Abba) Greenleaf is a public health demographer whose research focuses on (1) women’s reproductive health across geographies and the lifespan and\; (2) intensive longitudinal data collection. By integrating these areas\, she is creating innovative findings for international sexual and reproductive health population sciences. She enjoys leveraging innovative data collection approaches to generate high-frequency\, cost- efficient population data for public health action.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Museum Studies Program\, Museums at Noon
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Madeleine Harris (MSP24\; PhD candidate\, Classical Studies)\nMuseum stewardship\, the process by which museums build and nurture relationships with the individuals and organizations who support them\, is an integral part of development work. Stewardship can take many forms\, ranging from individual contact to widespread outreach campaigns. This summer\, I had the opportunity to learn more about this process with the University of Michigan Art Museum’s Development team. This presentation will explore how UMMA develops and fosters its relationships with donors and supporters\, with a particular focus on “impact reports” and museum member stewardship.

SUMMARY:Performance:Veterans Day Carillon Recital
DESCRIPTION:The Veterans Day Carillon Recital is performed on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Does Management Matter? Evidence from Indigent Defense in Texas
DESCRIPTION:The majority of felony cases in the United States involve indigent defendants represented by publicly financed attorneys. We examine the effects of efforts to improve representation for economically disadvantaged defendants through the adoption of managed indigent defense offices (MIDs) in Texas\, which impose a layer of oversight and accountability on attorneys who provide indigent defense services. Exploiting the staggered roll-out of MIDs across Texas counties\, together with administrative data on attorney employment and caseloads\, jail populations\, and newly compiled arrest and prison records\, we show that introducing management concentrates cases among a smaller set of local lawyers. Management reduces the use of bench warrants and the probability of imprisonment. Sentences among those incarcerated lengthen as imprisonment falls\, implying that the defendants diverted from prison would have served relatively short terms. Overall\, we find that management matters in the administration of criminal justice.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | High-Temperature Superconductivity – Insights from Einstein’s Electrons
DESCRIPTION:Complex phenomena in solids remain a central theme of 21st-century physics. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)\, based on Einstein’s photoelectric effect\, has emerged as a leading tool for exploring this frontier\, providing direct\, momentum-resolved access to the electronic structure—the “DNA” of quantum materials. Its impact spans cuprate superconductors\, topological systems\, and two-dimensional materials\, where it has both tested theoretical ideas and revealed unexpected behavior. \n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss both the progress and remaining challenges in understanding cuprate high-temperature superconductors through the lens of ARPES. From testing theoretical ideas and uncovering unexpected phenomena to resolving long-standing puzzles and benchmarking models\, systematic ARPES studies point toward a pathway for achieving high-temperature superconductivity. \n\nIn the poorly screened regime near correlation-driven insulating states\, the interplay between strong electron–electron and electron–phonon interactions could enhance pairing strength while suppressing structural instabilities. At the same time\, this environment fosters competing orders and fluctuations\, giving rise to the rich and complex phenomenology characteristic of these unconventional superconductors.\n\nA. An experimental condensed matter physicist\, he is renowned for establishing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as a central tool for probing the electronic structure of quantum materials\, transforming the field. His contributions have been recognized by the Department of Energy E.O. Lawrence Award\, the APS Oliver E.
