SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Valuatively independent bases for Calabi-Yau varieties
DESCRIPTION:From the perspective of the Gross-Siebert program\, the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau varieties is governed by certain canonical bases for the sections of the powers of an ample line bundle on a degeneration. It is expected that the pairing between these basis elements and valuations in the essential skeleton satisfies an independence condition\, similar to the pairing between monomials and monomial valuations on a toric variety. In this talk\, I will explain how tools from birational geometry and K-stability can be used to construct bases that fulfill this condition. This is joint work with Yuchen Liu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Guest Lecture | Heritage Forensics: Culture on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict
DESCRIPTION:This talk introduces the concept of heritage forensics\, a framework for studying abuses of cultural heritage in contexts of conflict\, genocide\, and ethnic cleansing. Drawing on the new co-authored volume\, *Heritage Forensics: Cultural on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict*\, the presentation examines how cultural sites became entangled in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh during the interwar period (1994-2020). The talk considers how satellite-based heritage forensics is being deployed prospectively\, to monitor hundreds of Armenian sites in Karabakh following Azerbaijan's 2023 takeover of the region and the displacement of its Armenian population. In doing so\, it asks: how can satellite-based monitoring function as a form of \"counter-forensics\,\" turning surveillance technologies developed for military purposes back on the state? Can heritage forensics move us beyond retrospective documentation to actively deter erasure and support truth\, reconciliation\, and accountability wherever cultural heritage is at stake?\n\nLori Khatchadourian is Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Anthropology at Cornell University\, and co-founder and co-director of Caucasus Heritage Watch. She currently serves as Director of the Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies. Khatchadourian’s research spans the fields of archaeology\, social anthropology\, and heritage studies\, with a particular focus on Armenia\, the wider South Caucasus\, and neighboring regions. Current projects explore the archaeology of modernity\, including problems of genocide\, deindustrialization\, and the entanglements of cultural heritage and war. She is the co-author of *Heritage Forensics: Culture on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict* (Cornell\, 2026) and author of Imperial Matter: Ancient Persia and the Archaeology of Empires (UC Press\, 2016). She is also co-editor of *Rethinking Empire: Materiality\, Metaphysics\, and Imperial Politics* (SAR\, 2026) and *Fitful Histories and Unruly Publics: The Archaeology of Eurasia *(2017).\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99311308952\n\nCosponsors: Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies\, Department of Middle East Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Classical Studies\, Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies\, Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology (IPAMAA) Kelsey Museum\, and NAASR.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Presentation:U-M Biological Station Information Session for Students
DESCRIPTION:Wake to loon calls\, conduct research beneath towering pines and end the day with a sunset swim in Douglas Lake.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station is recruiting undergraduate and graduate students for immersive\, field-based courses and research fellowships during its four-week spring and summer 2027 terms in northern Michigan.\n\nStudents can explore the opportunities at an Information Session at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Nov. 11\, 2026\, in Room 1040 of the Dana Building on U-M’s Ann Arbor campus.\n\nUMBS staff and recent students will discuss courses\, credits\, scholarships\, undergraduate research fellowships\, cabin life and dining. No prior field experience is required\, and students of all majors from colleges and universities worldwide are welcome.\n\n“This is more than school. This is a life-changing experience\,” said Hassan Mustapha\, a U-M senior and pre-med student who took classes at UMBS in summer 2026.\n\nLocated along Douglas Lake and Burt Lake about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge\, UMBS is a more than 10\,000-acre living laboratory where students learn and conduct research in forests\, rivers and lakes. Most courses include a research component.\n\nAvery Schestag\, a U-M senior studying ecology and evolutionary biology\, arrived with little field experience. In spring 2026\, she studied how leaf litter affects soil nitrogen in forests across northern Michigan as part of an ecology class.\n\n“It was really cool to do the research\,” Schestag said. “I enjoyed being able to go out in the field a lot and come back to the lab.”\n\nStudents also learn directly from conservation professionals\, researchers and community partners.\n\nIsa Reyes\, a U-M graduate student studying ecosystem science and management and geospatial data science in the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS)\, served as the 2026 CLEAR Fellow and took the Conservation Biology in Practice class.\n\n“It was really cool to meet with so many practitioners — the people who do a lot of great conservation work — and then go out in the field and see unique species like Kirtland’s warblers and dwarf lake iris\,” Reyes said.\n\nUMBS welcomes students from across disciplines. Bailey McClive\, a U-M chemical engineering junior\, studied microbiology and Great Lakes policy and management during the 2026 summer term.\n\n“Getting the chance to come out and connect with nature is not something I get to do a lot for my major\,” McClive said. “Building connections with Michigan professors\, research scientists from around the world\, and regional stakeholders is so valuable.”\n\nThe residential experience at UMBS creates a close-knit community. Students\, professors\, researchers\, staff and their families share meals\, explore northern Michigan and live in cabins.\n\n“At the Biological Station\, I met so many people who are similar to me in so many different ways\,” said Annie Wesorick\, a U-M junior studying ecology and evolutionary biology. “I feel like I made 50 new friends while I was here.”\n\nFor Zafir Maker-Agha\, who studied business administration and environmental science at U-M\, UMBS provided a memorable finish to his undergraduate experience.\n\n“The campus is gorgeous\,” Maker-Agha said. “I would wake up and go on a run\, see the sunrise along the lake and maybe go fishing before breakfast.”\n\nThe spring 2027 term runs June 1 through July 1. The summer 2027 term runs July 13 through Aug. 12.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nOur vast campus engages all of the senses. Its remote\, natural setting nurtures deep thought and scientific discovery.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.
