SUMMARY:Exhibition:Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye
DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DCMB Tools and Technology Seminar by Abhirath Anand (Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the DCMB Tools & Technology Seminar Series featuring a presentation by Abhirath Anand from the Department of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics. Enjoy a complimentary pizza lunch while learning about innovative research and cutting-edge tools.\n\n\"hospitraceR: An R Package for WGS-Based Genomic Epidemiological Analysis of Healthcare-Associated Infections”\n\n- Tool Link: https://github.com/theabhirath/hospitraceR\n\nAbstract\n\nGenomic epidemiology\, which combines whole-genome sequencing (WGS) with patient data is becoming increasingly common to detect the transmission of hospital-acquired infections\, especially multi-drug resistant organisms. As high-throughput WGS becomes more affordable\, software that facilitates the analysis of this genomic data along with patient metadata becomes crucial to generate timely insights. Prior studies have shown that there can be many different approaches to detect transmission clusters with genomic epidemiology data\, and oftentimes these approaches will have tradeoffs more or less suitable for a certain dataset. We present hospitraceR\, an R package designed to facilitate such analyses. hospitraceR includes functions for detecting transmission clusters with two different methods\, the standard SNV threshold approach and a threshold-free approach. It also includes functions that can use patient movement information through the facility to suggest potential transmission explanations for the clusters. hospitraceR seeks to enable users to use multiple methods of transmission cluster detection and compare them easily using cluster comparison metrics. Metrics like the adjusted Rand Index (ARI) and adjusted mutual information (AMI) have been included for this purpose\, as has fraction of converts with shared source (FSS)\, a custom metric designed specifically for comparing transmission clusters. A companion package\, hospitraceRvisualize\, also includes opinionated plotting functions for certain commonplace visualizations that aid in epidemiological interpretations. We apply hospitraceR to a dataset consisting of 4 long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) from Chicago sampled for different periods of time as part of an intervention study and evaluate the two different approaches for cluster detection. We find distinct patterns exhibited by the transmission clusters in different locations and also compare the different clusters obtained with different SNV thresholds and linkage criterion for hierarchical clustering. The hospitraceR package proves to be helpful in facilitating such comparisons and makes it easy to use WGS data to aid epidemiological investigation.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:NCKS Colloquium Series | Koreatown\, NYC: The Consumption of a Transnational Brand
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person and virtually on Zoom. If you would like to attend via Zoom\, registration is required. Once you've registered\, joining information will be sent to your email. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/8JNPb\n\nSynopsis:\nIn the past decade\, Korean entertainment has gained global recognition\, with Korean movies and TV shows winning Oscars and Emmys\, and K-Pop groups becoming wildly popular. In Manhattan\, Koreatown has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists\, drawing them in with its bars\, restaurants\, and day spas. Jinwon Kim argues that Manhattan’s Koreatown has become a new type of ethnic enclave\, what she dubs a “transclave.” This commercialized ethnic space exists solely for consumption\, leisure\, and entertainment\, and has been shaped by South Korea’s nation-branding strategy\, new economic and cultural strategies\, patterns in Korean migration\, and shifts in tourism and urban policies in New York City. Kim posits that for many consumers in Koreatown\, especially those who are not of Korean descent\, the space has become a commercialized place where transnational culture meets the diverse racial and ethnic mosaic of New York City. Kim emphasizes how the space functions to “brand Korea” as a space to “consume ethnicity\,” reflecting the landscape of South Korea’s consumer culture through the physical appearance of buildings and stores and the inclusion of franchise brands. In this talk\, Kim explores the recent popularity of Korean food in New York City by focusing on both transnational and domestic factors\, leading to the new trend of commercialization of ethnic food\, emphasis on authenticity\, and rise of the omnivore society\, by delivering the voices of ordinary people. While Koreatown’s authenticity has been largely defined by commercialized ethnic cuisine by local entrepreneurs\, the Korean government\, and franchises\, Kim argues that Koreatown’s authenticity has represented the collective imaginations and narratives of various consumer groups–Korean nationals\, Korean Americans\, and non-Koreans.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nJinwon Kim is assistant professor of sociology at Smith College. An urban sociologist and Asian Americanist\, her research and teaching focus on race and ethnicity\, transnational sociology\, immigration\, consumption\, and qualitative research methods. Prior to her appointment at Smith College\, she was a tenure-track assistant professor at the New York City College of Technology/CUNY (2019–2024). Her peer-reviewed scholarship has appeared in journals such as *City & Community* and *The International Journal of Cultural Policy*\, and she is the co-editor of the volume *Koreatowns: Exploring the Economics\, Politics\, and Identities of Korean Spatial Formations* (2020). Kim is currently working on two book-length projects that investigate transnational culture and urban transformation. The first\, *New Trends\, Old Conflicts: New Black-Korean Relations in an Era of Global Racism and Global Media*\, draws on 280 international interviews to examine anti-Blackness and interracial dynamics within the Korean entertainment industry\, situating these conflicts within East Asian geopolitics. Her second project\, *The Asian Times Square: Gentrification\, Displacement\, and New Ethnic Placemaking in Flushing\, NY*\, examines how waterfront megaprojects\, transnational investments\, and gentrification drive the physical and symbolic displacement of working-class East Asian immigrant families and small businesses. It also explores how these processes reshape inter/intraethnic relations among four East Asian groups—Koreans\, Korean Chinese\, Chinese\, and Taiwanese—in Flushing\, New York City.\n\n*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at namhy@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.*
