SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:19th Annual Inside China Automotive Conference: Key Trends Shaping China's Automotive Market and Global Influence
DESCRIPTION:This conference will be a hybrid conference with options to attend in person or to view via a YouTube livestream.\n\nOur 19th Annual Inside China Automotive Conference on November 12th at the University of Michigan we'll be continuing our discussion of China's auto market and its global influence. Over the past 30 years China's auto industry was almost exclusively an internal market led by foreign manufacturers\, but over the past 5-10 years\, the introduction of New Energy Vehices (EVs\, PHEVs\, and Fuel Cell Vehicies)\, the market has tilted towards local Chinese manufacturers who are designing\, building\, and selling vehicles not only in China but globally.\n\nAs the Chinese auto market matures and sales level off\, Chinese auto companies are learning about being global manufacturers by flooding markets with well priced\, quality\, and attractive vehicles\, similar to what the rest of China has been doing with consumer products for the past 25 years. How have they done this so quickly? How successful have they been? Where are they not as successful? What are they learning about automotive globalization? What will the global auto industry look like in 5-10 years? We will tackle these questions within the Chinese context.\n\nBut we'll also focus in what is going on Inside China. What vehicles are popular\, what are the sales volumes\, which companies are leading\, are any of the 100 or more manufacturers closing shop? We'll also look at Chinese automotive labor issues\, auto-related government policies\, and company strategies. It will be a fulsome discussion. Please join us.\n\nConfirmed Speakers include:\n- Bruce Belzowski\, Managing Director\, Automotive Futures will moderate the conference and provide an overview of the current trends in the Chinese auto industry.\n\n- Boy Luthge\, Senior research fellow at the Institute of Social Research (Institut für Sozialforschung) in Frankfurt and visiting professor at the School of Government\, Sun Yat-Sen University\, Guangzhou\, will discuss his research on labor issues in the Chinese auto industry.\n\nConference Registration Cost:\n- Automotive Futures Affiliates and Current UM Students\, Faculty\, and Staff\, GERPISA members\, and Media: FREE\n- For all others: $200 (Unchanged since our first conference in 2008)\n\nConference Sponsorship:\n- Companies or groups interested in sponsoring this conference\, please contact Bruce Belzowski at bbl@umich.edu or 734-936-2704. Sponsorship Amount (Minimum $1\,000)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Black Birth Joy
DESCRIPTION:Black Birth Joy by Tiana Lashae documents birth as a deeply personal story of connection\, courage\, tenderness\, and joy. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead\, the exhibit offers evidence of joy\, reminders of possibility\, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard\, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers\, babies\, partners\, families\, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care\, respectful treatment\, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity\, dignity\, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae\, a doula and birth/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine\, an international publication. The physical exhibit is accompanied by a virtual component that encourages audiences to engage with each mother's birth story.\n\nThe Lane Hall Exhibit Space is sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) at the University of Michigan. \n\nBlack Birth Joy\nThursday\, October 1\, 2026 – Friday\, January 15\, 2027\nLane Hall Exhibit Space\, 204 S State St.\, Ann Arbor\, MI\nOpen M–F\, 9AM–5PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Faster and More Fun: American Home Cooking in the 1920s
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room to see historical materials that illustrate women’s changing relationship with food\, cooking\, and technology during the heady decade of the 1920s\, sandwiched between WWI and the Great Depression. This exhibit features materials from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive\, as well as select items from the Art\, Architecture\, and Engineering Special Collections and the Transportation History Collection.\n\nAs America rang in a new decade in the 1920s\, cookbook authors and appliance manufacturers stood ready to offer the newly emancipated and forward-thinking American woman a vision for her future\, a vision that would be scientifically grounded\, speedy enough to make time for leisure as well as housework\, and guaranteed to bring fun to that most humdrum of chores: planning and preparing meals for a family three times a day\, 365 days a year.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Like the flowing river
DESCRIPTION:Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form\, one echoing the other\, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality\, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away\, for contemplation\, to draw inward\, to come inside\, to ask the question\, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence\, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.\n\nThis exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.\n\n*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki\, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: \"The flow of the river is ceaseless\, and the water is never the same…\"*

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS Mentorship Under the Microscope: The Art of Being a Mentor & Mentee
DESCRIPTION:Mentorship is often framed as a one-way transfer of knowledge\, but in reality\, it is a dynamic\, reciprocal process. Additionally\, postdocs and graduate students often serve in a dual capacity with roles as a mentor and mentee. This mentorship retreat examines mentorship as a practice that requires reflection and skill-building from both sides of the relationship. We will talk strategies and best practices about what it means to balance being both a mentor and a mentee in a research environment.\nA complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Small Works: Prints & Book Objects from Detroit\, 2020–2026
DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 27 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form\, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.\n\n*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027\, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday\, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM\, and Saturday–Sunday\, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM\; closed Mondays and university holidays.*
