SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Geometry seminar: The boundary of a totally geodesic subvariety of moduli space
DESCRIPTION:The moduli space of genus g Riemann surfaces equipped with the Teichmuller metric exhibits rich geometric\, analytic\, and dynamical properties. A major challenge is to understand the totally geodesic submanifolds -- these share many properties with the moduli space itself. For many decades\, research focused on the one (complex) dimensional case\, i.e. the captivating Teichmuller cuves\, but the discovery of interesting higher-dimensional examples in recent years has led to new questions. In this talk\, I will discuss joint work with Benirschke and Rached in which we study the boundary of a totally geodesic subvariety in the Deligne-Mumford compactification\, showing that the boundary is itself totally geodesic.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Meet and Greet with Stacey L. Kirby\, 2024–25 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence
DESCRIPTION:Queer artist Stacey L. Kirby\, the 2024–25 Roman J. Witt Artist-in-Residence\, will present a new iteration of The Bureau of Personal Belonging at Stamps Gallery in the fall of 2025. \nThe Bureau is a series of interactive performances set within immersive installations\, activated by viewer participation. Kirby’s work fosters dialogue on identity\, community\, civil rights\, LGBTQIA+ rights\, and immigration in the United States. Through bureaucratic form papers\, postures\, language\, and aesthetics\, participants are invited to examine questions of citizenship and civil authority. \nKirby is seeking students\, staff\, and faculty to perform in The Bureau during the exhibition\, running from Sept. 26 - Nov. 8\, 2025. Prior performance experience is NOT required. Performance times will be determined at a later date. Currently in residence on campus through March 2025\, Kirby welcomes conversations with those interested in participating. \n\nJoin Kirby on Friday\, March 28th\, 4-5 pm at Stamps Gallery for a casual gathering with snacks. Kirby will share insight into The Bureau at Stamps and answer questions about performing. Bring a friend!\nInterested? Reach out to Kirby via this link.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Michigan Lectures in Algebraic Geometry: Gromov's cancellation\, motivic invariants and the Grothendieck ring of varieties III
DESCRIPTION:I explain some cancellation and non-cancellation phenomena in algebraic geometry\, such as the Gromov cancellation question: If the open complements of two closed subvarieties of an ambient variety are isomorphic\, are these closed subvarieties birational? This question has a positive answer when varieties are smooth or simple normal crossing\, and a negative answer in more general cases. The emphasis will be on the structure of the Grothendieck ring of varieties and on the groups of birational self-maps of algebraic varieties. This will be an overview of the work of many people in the last 25 years since Gromov's original formulation\, including Larsen-Lunts\, Borisov\, Zakharevich\, Hassett-Lai\, Kontsevich-Tschinkel\, and most recently\, work by Lin and myself.

SUMMARY:Meeting:The Logistics of Counter-Revolution: Fast Circulation\, Slow Violence\, and the Transpacific Empire of Circulation
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: 11am - 1pm\nRLL Commons\, MLB 4314\n\nLecture: 4pm - 5:30pm\nNorth Quad\, Room 2185\n\nRSVP at our link!\n\nThe rise of the global logistics industry has profoundly impacted global workers' struggles by organizing goods movement through a politics of just-in-time circulation. Although scholars have often dubbed this phenomenon \"the revolution in logistics\,\" in this paper I argue that the so-called 'logistics revolution' is better understood as a counter-revolution.\n\nAs anti-colonial leaders and trade unions in Southeast Asia pursued economic sovereignty during the “Third World’s” transition to independence\, they nationalized industry\, seized colonial property\, and sought to build national shipping and industrial capacity. To contain this threat to private enterprise\, US and UK shipping corporations\, backed by their states\, pursued the globalization of supply chain infrastructures.\n\nFocusing on a swathe of nationalizations of Dutch and British merchant\, shipping\, and plantation corporations in Indonesia from 1960-66\, this talk examines how shipping containerization only became viable when it aided imperial containment strategy. As I argue\, bringing the history of logistics into conversation with decolonizing workers' and nationalist struggles in Southeast Asia transforms our understanding of the logistics counter-revolution\, positioning it as a reactionary political project that consolidated colonial power into new economic forms.\n\nTracing the historical conjecture of the rise of logistics with the end of formal empire\, I ask: What did the rise of logistics look like from the vantage of the decolonizing of the global south?

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Artist's Reception: Breaking with Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Artist John Rizzo is exhibiting individual mixed-media sculptures that bridge across art\, design\, and craft. Using a combination of materials that are historically perceived as precious John's work distorts\, disrupts\, and re-contextualizes perceptions of materials and their values. His work is at once \, colorful \, playful \, layered and deeply self-reflective in its personal narrative.
