SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIM Seminar:  Math and physics at the moiré scale
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Placing a two-dimensional lattice with a small rotation gives rise to almost periodic \"moiré\" patterns on a superlattice scale much larger than the original lattice. We have used the mathematical techniques developed to study waves in inhomogeneous media to identify a regime where the Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model emerges as the effective dynamics for electrons modeled as wave-packets spectrally concentrated at the monolayer Dirac points of linear dispersion\, up to error that we rigorously estimate. We have shown that this regime is realized in twisted bilayer graphene at the first \"magic\" angle where the group velocity of the wave packet is zero and strongly correlated electronic phases (superconductivity\, Mott insulators\, etc.) have recently been observed.\n\nWe will present recent results that rigorously extend this analysis to account for the effects of structural relaxation and to essentially arbitrary moiré materials such as twisted multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) or even twisted heterostructures consisting of layers of distinct 2D materials.\n\nContact: Ian Tobasco

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorial invariance for the coefficient of q in Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials
DESCRIPTION:I will describe joint work with Grant Barkley and Thomas Lam in which we study the Combinatorial Invariance Conjecture (CIC)\, which asserts that Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials depend only on the combinatorics of Bruhat order. Motivated by the cluster structure on Richardson varieties\, we prove the combinatorial invariance of the coefficient of q in KL polynomials for arbitrary Coxeter groups. We also prove the Gabber-Joseph conjecture for the second-highest Ext group of a pair of Verma modules\, as well as the combinatorial invariance of the dimension of this group.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Seminar | Out-of-time-ordered Correlators in de Sitter Revisited
DESCRIPTION:We study the 4-point out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) of scalar fields using the eikonal approximation to gravity around a de Sitter background. We consider de Sitter space in any dimension and any bulk masses of the scalar fields. At tree level we find the maximal Lyapunov exponent of  2 \pi/\beta_{dS}. However\, we describe an IR problem in this calculation at the loop level associated with the vector part of the graviton propagator. Regularizing this divergence leads to the vanishing of all odd powers in Newton's constant in the asymptotic expansion\, so that the leading answer comes with twice the maximal Lyapunov exponent in simple operator configurations. We find that the perturbative OTOC in de Sitter can initially grow\, which is not allowed by the quantum bound on chaos. Interestingly\, we find that this growth is mediated by large diffeomorphisms in the graviton propagator.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:High-Speed Back Emitting VCSEL for AI Scale-up Optical Interconnects
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \n\nHigh bandwidth-density and energy-efficient optical links are required to interconnect accelerators\, memory\, and switches in AI scale-up systems. Back-emitting (BE) vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) are promising for this application because of its two-dimensional (2D) topology facilitating large array\, simultaneous operation using flip-chip addressable architecture. The wavelength of interests ranges from 940- to 1060-nm wavelength regime. In this talk\, we review BE-VCSEL at both wavelengths\, showing their suitability for high-speed multi-mode fiber (MMF) transmission. For the 940-nm BE-VCSEL with a monolithically integrated high-contrast- metalens (HCM) at the back of the substrate to enable high efficiency MMF coupling with a large tolerance. A 106-Gb/s PAM4 link over 30-m OM2 fiber operates below the KP4-FEC threshold was obtained. The 940-nm flip-chip device exhibits an approximately 40-K lower junction temperature than a reference 850-nm top-emitting VCSEL at 9 mA\, supports an open 106-Gb/s PAM4 eye at 110 °C\, and achieves error-free 25-Gb/s NRZ transmission at 140 °C. A 16-channel near-package-optics transmitter provides clear 106-Gb/s PAM4 eyes across all channels\, corresponding to an aggregate capacity of approximately 1.6 Tb/s. For the 1060-nm BE-VCSEL\, we show a 3-dB modulation bandwidth of 43.97-GHz at 7 mA\, limited by instrumentation. The device has a low 0.4-mA threshold current and intensity noise of -149.6 dB/Hz at 7 mA. It further supports 212-Gb/s PAM4 transmission over 30-m OM2 and 50-m OM5 fibers under the stated transmitter and receiver equalization conditions. We believe these results attest to BE-VCSEL array for high-lane-rate\, two-dimensionally scalable optical engines for cost-effective AI scale-up interconnects through conventional MMF over a wide wavelength range between 940~1060 nm.\n\nBio\n\nConnie Chang-Hasnain is Chairperson of Berxel Photonics Co. Ltd. and X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). Dr. Chang-Hasnain received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from UC Berkeley in 1987. She was a Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Communications Research (1987–1992) and Assistant Professor at Stanford University (1992–1995). She joined UC Berkeley as Professor of EECS in 1996. She was Whinnery Distinguished Chair Professor since 2006\; Chair of the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Graduate Group 2006-2017\; and Associate Dean for Strategic Alliances of College of Engineering 2014-2019. She retired from UC Berkeley and is Whinnery Chair Professor Emerita since 2020.\n\nProf. Chang-Hasnain’s research interests range from semiconductor optoelectronic devices to materials and applications. Over the past 40 years\, she worked on many aspects of VCSELs including planar VCSEL structure\, MEMS-VCSEL for wavelength tuning\, and VCSEL arrays for 3D imaging. She has been honoured with the 2024 IEEE Nick Holonyak Jr. Medal\, 2018 Okawa Prize\, 2015 UNESCO Medal For the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies\, and 2011 IEEE David Sarnoff Award. She was the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Lightwave Technology 2007-2012\, a member of IEEE LEOS Board of Governors\, OSA Board of Directors\, and the 2021 President of Optica. She is member of the US National Academy of Engineering.

DESCRIPTION:We have developed deep-learning-based models for tasks involved in seismic monitoring to develop far more comprehensive catalogs of activity than were previously possible\, and have applied them to multiple magmatic systems in diverse settings.  In Mayotte they revealed far more long-period events than were previously known.  In Campi Flegrei they revealed activity of limited depth extent on the ring fault\, and the existence of multiple previously unrecognized faults under the western suburbs of Naples.  In the Santorini-Amorgos Arc they revealed multiple episodes of rapid horizontal and gradual vertical migration.  In each of these cases\, the insights we developed inform hazard assessment.  For Mayotte\, ongoing activity at depth suggests that the magmatic system remains active.  In Campi Flegrei\, the lack of events below 4 km depth suggests that there is no immediate threat of an eruption due to magma transfer from the deeper reservoir.  In the Santorini-Amorgos Arc the lack of events shallower than 8 km suggests dike injection did not approach the surface during the February 2025 crisis.  The combination of the isolated nature of volcano monitoring in local observatories and the limited deployment of deep learning for seismic monitoring\, points to an unmet need for a federated approach to dealing with the threat of eruptions in future volcanic crises.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS 2026 Kavita Datla Memorial Lecture | Minor Cosmopolitanisms: Islam\, Urdu\, and Secularism in Postcolonial India
DESCRIPTION:Attend in person or via Zoom: https://myumi.ch/e73ZQ\n\nThis lecture seeks to build upon Kavita Datla’s work by exploring Urdu as a secular language of Islam. It does so by examining the life and intellectual biography of Syed Abid Husain (1896–1978)\, drawing upon his extensive corpus of works – including translations from German into Urdu\, creative literary writings\, and educational and political activism at Jamia Millia Islamia – to paint a portrait of a nationalist Indian Muslim in colonial and postcolonial India. Moving beyond the framework of nationalist history and adopting a global intellectual history approach\, my lecture aims to expand our geographical and conceptual understanding of ideas by mapping what I call the minor cosmopolitanisms of Husain’s intellectual journeys. I argue that Husain’s engagement with both German majoritarian and minority thought worlds offer valuable insights into the minority not merely as a political category but also as an intellectual and ethical one. Ultimately\, I contend that Husain’s life and writings provide unique insight on both the crises facing democracy and the potential for critical secularism and minority thought in an era dominated by majoritarian nationalism.\n\nDr. Razak Khan is a senior research fellow in global history at the Department of History\, Free University\, Berlin. He is part of the European Research Council funded project “Unfamiliar: Family\, Law\, and Democracy in South Asia.” It looks at the intersection of religion\, gender and sexual minorities\, and family law on the issues of marriage\, adoption\, and inheritance. His monograph *Minority Pasts: Locality\, Emotions\, and Belonging in Rampur* was published by (Oxford University Press\, 2022). He also edited the English translation edition of *The Incomparable Festival* (Penguin Random House India\, 2021) and co-edited *Nodes of Translation: Intellectual History between Modern India and Germany* (De Gruyter\, 2024). Kelley wrote “Freedom Dreams\,” where he began his book asking two questions: “How do we produce a vision that enables us to see beyond our immediate ordeals?” and\, “How do we transcend bitterness and cynicism and embrace love\, hope\, and an all-encompassing dream of freedom\, especially during these rough times?” Being in dialogue with Dr. Kelley\, this presentation “freedom dreams in Chemistry” by exploring the possibilities and outcomes of using Afrofuturism as a framework to anchor STEM research\, teaching\, learning\, and engagement. Implications for conspirators and co-conspirators in the freedom-dreaming movement are discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a colloquium presented by Kristine Yu (University of Massachusetts Amhearst) in NQ2435 on Friday\, October 2\, 2026\, from 4-5:30 PM!\n\nTitle: The shifting motivation for prosodic constituents\n\nAbstract: The motivation for introducing prosodic constituents into phonological grammar was originally that doing so recognizes generalizations about the otherwise coincidental distribution of disparate phonological patterns. In a systematic literature review bringing together work from intonational phonology\, prosodic phonology\, and the morphosyntax-phonology interface\, we show that the way linguists think about prosodic constituents has in fact drifted away from their original conception. In fact\, converging phonological patterns play a minimal role in motivating prosodic domains. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations.
