SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:IES Energy Seminar Series - Battery SoX Intelligence: Millivolts Unlocking Gigawatt-hours
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nScaling grid storage with repurposed EV batteries requires precise degradation tracking. For LFP\, a flat open-circuit voltage curve obscures cell aging. This presentation demonstrates how monitoring millivolt-level behaviors extracts gigawatt-hours of latent capacity. By combining physics-informed models with electrochemical state estimation\, we resolve LFP and graphite phase-transitions. Operational data shows how these voltage signatures drive predictive aging forecasts and anomaly detection\, unlocking safe operation beyond industry-standard warranties. \n\nBiography:\nDr. Kandler Smith is Technical Fellow for Energy Storage Modeling at Moment Energy\, a second-use battery energy storage company. He previously worked for 19 years at U.S. DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory as Team Lead for Electrochemical Modeling & Data Sciences\, developing multi-physics models of battery performance\, lifetime\, safety and technoeconomics. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from Penn State University (2006) where his research focused on electrochemical modeling\, estimation and control of lithium-ion batteries.\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location\, please check the related link the week of this event

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar Series - Microbial responses to global change: from microscopic interactions to global patterns
DESCRIPTION:Seminar Summary - The Evans Lab studies microbial ecology and global change. We ask questions about how microbes respond to stressors like climate change\, particularly drought and floods\, and land use change like agricultural intensification. How microbes respond can affect a myriad of ecosystem services\, including soil fertility and crop growth\, and biogeochemical cycles. In this talk I highlight studies in our lab that span microscopic to global. First\, I'll talk about how (and whether) we can generalize microbial responses to a global change\, like drought. We used a network of rainout shelters to ask whether there were taxonomic or trait-based shifts in microbes under drought\, worldwide. We also extend this work to thinking about how microbes interact with plants to buffer plants under drought. Second\, I'll talk about a project investigating bacteria that fix nitrogen\, and how they interact with both the plant and other organisms in the soil\, like fungi. We hypothesized that bacterial-fungal interactions increased nitrogen fixation\, benefitting the plant\, and potentially reducing reliance on nitrogen fertilizers. I will also talk more generally about how these topics connect to global sustainability\, and relevant research at the Kellogg Biological Station Long Term Ecological Research Site.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Tribute: The 1963 March on Washington and the Gendered Politics of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:The 1963 March on Washington has become the standard bearer in American public memory for non-violent\, political demonstration. With Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech” as one of the most recognizable moments of the event\, the depth and the nuance of the March on Washington and the movement that shaped has rarely surfaced among and academic and popular discourse. With attention to widening the frame in which to analyze the 1963 March on Washington\, historian Marcia Chatelain offers a new reading of the March from the vantage point of the gender dynamics that undoubtedly shaped it.\n\nMarcia Chatelain is the Penn Presidential Compact Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. A historian of African-American life and culture\, Dr. Chatelain has taught at the University of Oklahoma and Georgetown University. She is the author of three books: South Side Girls: Growing up in the Great Migration\, Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America\, and How Bright the Path Grows: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the March on Washington. Dr. Chatelain has received awards for her writing and teaching\, including the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in History.\n\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Open Questions: Science Research Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Plans for a Los Alamos National Laboratory / University of Michigan research computing center have generated significant controversy at U-M and in the Ypsilanti community. Putting aside the specifics of that particular center and its planning\, however\, the project raises larger questions about the costs and benefits of infrastructure for advancing scientific research. What are the positive and negative impacts of such facilities as a class? What are the conditions under which similar centers should or should not be built? What are the differences between commercial data centers and research-focused computing facilities?\nThe November 12th Open Questions event will feature panelists who have different views of the above questions as well as others concerning computing infrastructure for research. As with other Open Questions panels\, the event will seek to enable a thorough airing of different perspectives with the goal of mutual understanding. Everyone interested in meaningful\, engaged dialogue is welcome. Join us!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A Conversation with Alice Miranda Ollstein\, Moderated by Julie Rovner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Alice Miranda Ollstein\, POLITICO’s senior health care reporter\, about her new book\, Side Effects: How Abortion Bans Impact Everyone’s Health\, a groundbreaking investigation into how the overturning of Roe v. Wade has transformed American health care far beyond reproductive rights. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting\, Ollstein examines how abortion restrictions have affected patients\, physicians\, and researchers across the country\, creating barriers to medically necessary pregnancy care\, fertility treatments\, contraception\, and other health services. Her reporting also reveals broader consequences for medical research\, hospital staffing\, wait times\, and the treatment of chronic illnesses as health care providers navigate legal uncertainty and the threat of prosecution.Through the experiences of patients and medical professionals\, Side Effects reframes abortion bans as a public health crisis with consequences for people of all ages\, genders\, and geographic locations. Ollstein also explores how patients\, physicians\, pharmacists\, and researchers are challenging these restrictions and working to protect access to care. The conversation will examine what these developments reveal about the intersection of health care\, law\, and politics—and what they mean for the future of American medicine. The conversation will be moderated by Julie Rovner\, chief Washington correspondent for KFF Health News and host of its What the Health? podcast. An accomplished journalist and author\, Rovner has covered health policy for decades\, reporting previously for National Public Radio\, National Journal\, Congressional Quarterly\, and The Lancet. As Ollstein’s mentor\, Rovner will bring her extensive expertise in health policy and journalism to a discussion of the far-reaching consequences of abortion restrictions and the future of reproductive health care in the United States.Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter a book giveaway for Side Effects.
