SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:William Caplin: Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Theory
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music Theory presents a lecture by guest scholar William Caplin\, Distinguished James McGill Professor of Music Theory at McGill University. This event is made possible with support from the Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Theory.\n\nABSTRACT\n\nThis talk examines various classification schemes for music theory and analysis\, especially ones that have played a central role in my own research activities. After a brief consideration of the ubiquity of *binary* oppositions in music-theoretical thought\, along with some limitations of this approach\, the remainder of the talk focuses on classifications consisting of *three* elements\, what I call (after Nattiez) *tripartitions*. I set the stage for my investigations by reviewing the three dialectically grounded tripartitions of *intervals*\, *harmonies*\, and *keys* as proposed by Mortiz Hauptmann in the mid nineteenth century. The heart of my talk then details three tripartitions in the domains of harmony\, form\, and general analytical methodologies. The first tripartition classifies harmonic progressions into three types: *prolongational*\, *sequential*\, and *cadential*. With the second tripartition\, I consider the temporal functions of *beginning*\, *middle*\, and *end*\, and examine how these temporalities are expressed by a variety of formal functions and formal types. The final tripartition\, inspired by some ideas of Leonard B. Meyer\, organizes various modes of music analysis into three general categories: *conformant*\, *statistical*\, and *syntactical*. To conclude\, I return to Hauptmann and consider the extent to which my three tripartitions correlate with his dialectical framework.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER\n\nWILLIAM CAPLIN completed undergraduate studies in music composition (BM\,1971) at the University of Southern California and graduate studies in the history and theory of music (MA\, 1975\; PhD\, 1981) at the University of Chicago. He began his academic career in the Faculty of Music at McGill University in 1978. He was appointed Distinguished James McGill Professor of Music Theory in 2019 following fourteen years as a James McGill Professor.\n\nCaplin specializes in the theories of musical form and musical cadence. His extensive investigations into formal procedures of late-eighteenth-century music culminated in the 1998 book *Classical Form: A Theory of Formal Functions for the Instrumental Music of Haydn\, Mozart\, and Beethoven* (Oxford University Press)\, which won the 1999 Wallace Berry Book Award from the Society for Music Theory. He has refined and extended his theoretical approach in his recent book *Cadence: A Study of Closure in Tonal Music* (OUP\, 2024). Caplin has also undertaken research in the history of music theory. His most notable study in this area\, “Theories of Musical Rhythm in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries\,” appears in *The Cambridge History of Western Music Theory*. His current academic project is a complete harmonic\, cadential and formal analysis of Beethoven’s thirty-two piano sonatas.\n\nCaplin’s research work has been honoured by two Festschrift publications: *Formal Functions in Perspective: Essays on Musical Form from Haydn to Adorno* (Eastman Studies in Music\, 2015)\; and “Contemplating Caplin\,” a Festschrift issue of *Intersections: Canadian Journal of Music* 31/1\, 2010. In 2015\, he was elected a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Arts and Humanities). Following his retirement in 2022\, he was awarded the 2023 McGill University Medal for Exceptional Academic Achievement. Most recently\, he received the 2025 Pascall Medal from the Society for Music Analysis (UK).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AIA Lecture | Ariadne’s Thread: Weaving 200\,000 Years of Naxos’ History
DESCRIPTION:This lecture asks\, (1) what makes us (*Homo sapiens*) special? And (2) why did Theseus and Ariadne go to Naxos? These radically different questions are answered through the archaeology of Stelida\, a site on the northwest coast of Naxos (Cycladic islands\, Greece)\, whose deep-time history takes us from Neanderthal toolmakers\, via Bronze Age worshippers\, to the Canadian/Greek project that has been investigating the site since 2013. From the earliest seafarers of the Northern Hemisphere to Ariadne’s hill\, follow this remarkable thread with the project’s director.\n\nThis event is free and open to the public\, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Society of the Archaeological Institute of America. Please join us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall to hear from Dr. Tristan Carter\, professor of anthropology at McMaster University and director of the Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project. Light refreshments will be served at 5:30 PM\, followed by the lecture at 6:00 PM.\n\nIf you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Voices of Dissent
DESCRIPTION:\n\nDirected by Anthony Arnove\, Voices of Dissent combines dramatic readings with live musical performances to bring the words of ordinary people throughout U.S. history to life. The performance features acclaimed actor David Strathairn\, an Academy Award nominee for his portrayal of Edward R. Murrow in Good Night\, and Good Luck. and an Emmy Award winner for Temple Grandin\; acclaimed singer-songwriter Allison Moorer\, an Oscar and Grammy-nominated artist known for her Americana songwriting and powerful storytelling\; and Thornetta Davis\, the award-winning Detroit vocalist known as the \"Queen of Detroit Blues.\" Drawing from letters\, diaries\, speeches\, and songs\, Voices of Dissent includes accounts from Ann Arbor\, the University of Michigan\, and across the state. Through a collaboration with the University of Michigan’s Inclusive History Project\, the production incorporates archival materials and local histories from the University’s archives at Bentley Historical Library and the Labadie Collection that illuminate the experiences of people who have fought for justice\, equality\, and freedom. \n\nInspired by the work of historian Howard Zinn (1922-2010)\, the production is based on A People’s History of the United States\, which has sold more than five million copies\, and Voices of a People’s History of the United States\, co-edited by Zinn and Arnove. By connecting these powerful historical voices to the present day\, Voices of Dissent reminds audiences that the struggle for justice is ongoing and that democracy depends on the participation of everyday people.\n\nAnthony Arnove is the editor of several books\, including Voices of a People’s History of the United States\, which he co-edited with Howard Zinn\, and Voices of a People’s History of the United States in the 21st Century\, which he co-edited with Haley Pessin. He also wrote the introduction to the 35th anniversary edition of Zinn’s classic book A People’s History of the United States. Arnove cofounded the nonprofit education and arts organization Voices of a People’s History of the United States\; co-wrote\, co-directed\, and co-produced the documentary The People Speak\; and has directed stage and television versions of The People Speak in Dublin with Stephen Rea\, in London with Colin Firth\, and across the United States with various arts groups\, including Lincoln Center\, the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, and the Sundance Film Festival. He also produced the Academy Award–nominated documentary Dirty Wars.\n\nIn partnership with the Inclusive History Project\, with and support from the U-M Ford School of Public Policy\, U.S. at 250 and the U-M Initiative for Democracy & Civic Empowerment. \n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. Media partner: Michigan Public.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Rise and Fall of the NCAA: How We Got Into This Mess
DESCRIPTION:When the topic of revenue sharing with student-athletes came up in 2023\, U-M Coach Jim Harbaugh loudly supported it\, arguing that “The current status quo is unacceptable and won’t survive.” Those words proved prophetic and today the world of college athletics is in rapid flux. Join us to hear from Lecturer Greg Dooley to hear about how similar concerns led to the creation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1906\, how the organization evolved and grew in power\, how that power has collapsed over the last decade\, and what it means for the Wolverines.\n\nGreg Dooley is a devoted Michigan sports fan\, having covered the history and culture of Michigan sports for over twenty years at his website MVictors.com. A full-time lecturer in the Marsal Family School of Education\, he teaches courses on “The History of College Athletics” leadership through coaching\, and on Name\, Image\, and Likeness (NIL) contracts. He also frequently appears as a guest on local radio shows\, history documentaries\, and as a speaker for university teams and alumni groups. \n\nRefreshments will be provided\, and anyone is welcome to attend this free talk. Registration is recommended for in-person attendance\, and we’re glad to welcome anyone who wishes to attend virtually. \n\nThe Making Michigan series is co-sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.
