DESCRIPTION:COMMITTEE:\nSripada\, Chandra (chair)\nBuss\, Sarah\nRailton\, Peter\nLee\, Taraz (cognate\, Psychology)\nHolton\, Richard (special member\, Cambridge University)\nWong\, Hong Yu (special member\, University of Tübingen)\n\nABSTRACT:\nThis dissertation develops an empirically informed account of four phenomena central to ambitious agency: control\, effort\, difficulty\, and burnout. I argue that they share a common theoretical core in the psychological architecture of cognitive control.\n\nChapter 1 argues for a causal account of agentially controlled action against Frankfurt-style capacity views\, which hold that agents control a movement iff they have the capacity to intervene in it. I show this to be insufficient. Agents can typically intervene in passive breathing\, yet passive breathing is not action. Agential control\, I suggest\, instead consists in the ubiquitous\, small-scale causal interventions an agent makes as a movement unfolds.\n\nChapter 2 develops a unified theory of effort. Mental effort (solving a chess puzzle) and bodily effort (running a marathon) seem fundamentally different\, and the philosophical literature is divided over whether effort is one phenomenon or many. I argue that all effort is the goal-directed deployment of cognitive control\, and that bodily effort is cognitive control causing central motor commands. Four convergent arguments support this view: subtraction cases\, the structure of effort choice\, the relation between control and failure\, and the reduction of effort in learning.\n\nChapter 3 offers an account of difficulty in terms of cognitive demand: the higher-order processing capacity a task requires of an agent in their circumstances\, given an appropriate means of execution. This account uniquely explains why difficulty decreases with learning\, captures the context-sensitivity of difficulty talk\, and extends naturally from mental to physical difficulty. I apply it to debates over moral responsibility\, achievement\, the value of difficult action\, and moral demandingness.\n\nChapter 4 turns to what happens when ambitious moral agents face unsustainable demands. Drawing on an empirical literature in nursing science and psychiatry\, I introduce Moral Burnout: a chronic stress condition in which agents who repeatedly fail to act successfully in accordance with their moral judgments lose the motivation to act on those judgments. Moral Burnout is a more potent counterexample to judgment internalism than psychopathy or depression\, because it leaves both the capacity for moral judgment and general motivational capacities intact.

DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare in the Arb performs every Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday from June 4 through June 28. It is a 3-hour outdoor\, moving performance that takes place within Nichols Arboretum.\n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn-style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. Expect inclines and slopes\, staircases\, grass\, gravel\, and mulch as part of the terrain. The play will proceed in many forms of weather.  \n\nTicket prices are $25 general admission/$20 members/$15 student & youth. Youth under 5\, free.  Please note: there is a service fee for tickets purchased online.\n\nAll tickets are held at Will Call\, Nichols Arboretum Visitor Center\, 1610 Washington Heights. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit in the Clark Library rotunda focuses on handmade decorative patterned papers when exploring books stored at the library's Buhr Offsite Shelving Facility. Decorative paper\, noticed when walking through the stack's aisles or surprising you when you casually flip through a book\, can really catch your eye. But because the Buhr stacks are closed from browsing\, the density and dimensionality of its nearly 3 million books are reduced to title searches on a screen.\n\nAs a response to these reflections\, artist and library staff member Stephanie Osorio shares her handbound unopenable book-objects as symbolic stand-ins for forgotten books at Buhr — the books that don’t get a chance to be noticed. Along with the book-objects are the carved woodblocks that made prints to decorate them. Some books from Buhr that inspired this project with their original decorated patterned papers will also be on display.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening reception on Thursday\, May 14th\, 5pm - 6:30pm\, for an opportunity to hear from the artist and engage with the book-objects.

SUMMARY:Performance:Stories & Songs: An Evening with Radney Foster & Kelly Willis
DESCRIPTION:Radney Foster first gained attention as half of the duo Foster & Lloyd\, who with “Crazy Over You” became the first duo in history to top the Country charts with their debut single. He then established himself as a solo artist in the early 90’s with his critically acclaimed release Del Rio\, Texas 1959. \n\nKnown as a songwriter’s songwriter\, his songs have been recorded by everyone from Keith Urban and the Chicks to Hootie & the Blowfish and George Benson. His own hits like “Just Call Me Lonesome\,” “Nobody Wins\,” and “Texas In 1880” continue to be played on radio and by bands around the world.\n\nHis most recent project For You To See The Stars is in two parts\, a book of short fiction\, and a collection of songs to go with it. He is currently working on another book of fiction\, as well as developing film and TV projects.\n\nSinger-songwriter Kelly Willis captured critical acclaim from her first release\, with a distinctive voice that conveys both tender heartache and smoldering heat. Born in Oklahoma\, she moved often as a kid with her Army Colonel dad. She started singing professionally at 16\, fronting the rockabilly band “Kelly and the Fireballs” in the DC area\, but it soon became clear she was more of a country singer. After high school\, she moved to Austin and It wasn’t long before she got on the radar of MCA’s Tony Brown\, who signed her after an introduction by Nanci Griffith.\n\nKelly’s recording career began at a time when Nashville was experiencing a creative resurgence with the likes of Lyle Lovett\, Steve Earle\, Foster & Lloyd and The O'Kanes. She recorded three albums for MCA that were critical hits\, but it wasn’t until she left the major label restrictions behind that she came into her own with 1999’s What I Deserve for Rykodisc.\n\nThe albums Willis has made since What I Deserve have only burnished her reputation as Austin’s reigning queen of Americana\, including being inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. When not performing her own music\, Kelly tours with Brennan Leigh and Melissa Carper as Wonder Women of Country\, in support of their 2023 self-titled EP.
