SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Model Your Mindset: Unlearning Ableism for True Disability Inclusion
DESCRIPTION:This workshop invites participants to rethink what “disability inclusion” really means—starting with the assumptions we carry every day. Together\, we’ll define and explore common models of disability\, examining how each one shapes the way we interpret access needs\, accommodations\, and belonging. Through real-world examples and guided reflection\, attendees will identify which models show up in their own language and decision-making—and leave with practical shifts they can make to help unlearn ableism and support more genuine\, disability-inclusive spaces at work and in life.\n\nAmerican Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) captioning services will be provided. If you need additional accommodations to participate in this webinar\, please email the ADA Coordinator at ADAcoordinator@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CA Seminar: The Second Vanishing Theorem in Ramified Mixed Characteristic
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: To a triple of a ring $R$\, an $R$-module $M$\, and an ideal $I$ we can associate the local cohomology modules $H^n_I(M)$. One classical problem dating back to a question of Grothendieck is to identify when these vanish for all $n > i$ and all modules $M$\, the smallest such $i$ we denote the cohomological dimension of $R$ with respect to $I$. Grothendieck showed that this is bounded by $d = \dim R$\, while a very simple condition on $\widehat{R}$ and $I\widehat{R}$ controls the vanishing at $d$. A more subtle topological condition controls the vanishing at $d-1$ for regular local rings as posed by Hartshorne in the late 60s\, and was proven in equicharacteristic in the early 70s. After 50 years it was shown to be true in unramified mixed characteristic\, and the main result of this talk is the ramified mixed characteristic case.\n\nWe will discuss the history of the problem\, as well as our solution in the ramified case. This proof can recover the vanishing in all characteristics\, providing a unified proof\, and requires only classical techniques making use of formal schemes.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Does the Higgs boson talk to itself? The latest ATLAS search for di-Higgs production in the HH→bbττ decay channel
DESCRIPTION:The Higgs boson\, the most recently discovered particle in the Standard Model\, is predicted to be an elementary scalar boson which can interact with itself -- an interaction which has yet to be experimentally observed. Measuring the strength of the Higgs self-interaction could tell us if the Higgs is a composite particle\, about the shape of the Higgs potential\, and further illuminate the details of Electroweak Symmetry-Breaking. By searching for proton--proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider which produce two Higgs bosons at the same time\, we can directly probe the Higgs trilinear self-coupling. In this talk\, I will motivate and present results from the latest ATLAS search for di-Higgs production in the HH→bbττ (two b-quarks and two tau leptons) decay channel\, the most sensitive search of its kind to date\, and the prospects for ATLAS di-Higgs measurements.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Math Grad Show and Tell Seminar: The Mathematics of Domino Tilings
DESCRIPTION:Suppose we have a region that is a bounded subset of the square grid (such as a finite union of squares on an infinite chessboard). Consider the problem of tiling this region with 1x2 and 2x1 dominoes. There are several questions that arise: \n– How can we tell whether such a region is tileable in the first place?\n– If such a region is tileable\, then how many tilings exist?\n– What does a \"typical\" tiling look like?\nIn this talk\, we will introduce several theorems that answer these questions\, and explore basic examples that illustrate these results. We will also see how tilings of large Aztec diamonds can create some interesting surfaces!

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Massy Mutumba)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:GLNT: Arithmetic intersections on non-split Cartan modular curves
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Take two CM elliptic curves over a number field\, each equipped with a level structure preserved by all endomorphisms. At which primes $p$ does there exist an isomorphism between the elliptic curves mod $p$ that preserves the level structures? This question was answered for $\Gamma_0(N)$ level structure by Gross\, Kohnen\, and Zagier in 1987. A key step in their proof is showing that an isomorphism mod $p$ determines embeddings of the (quadratic) CM orders into a common (quaternion) Eichler order. In this talk\, we will discuss what changes in the argument when we replace $\Gamma_0(N)$ with the normalizer of a non-split Cartan subgroup. This is joint work with Elie Studnia and Jan Vonk.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:ISRMT Seminar: On Fredholm Pfaffians and Riemann-Hilbert problems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I will illustrate how classes of Fredholm Pfaffians\, which can describe the eigenvalue distributions for orthogonal and symplectic matrix ensembles\, can be computed in terms of canonical\, auxiliary Riemann-Hilbert problems.\nThis is done by first algebraically manipulating the kernel of the Fredholm Pfaffian and then relating the resulting Pfaffian to a Riemann-Hilbert problem\, assuming its main kernel is either of additive Hankel composition or truncated Wiener-Hopf type. One can then find asymptotic results for the Fredholm Pfaffian as a natural consequence of the Rieman-Hilbert problem characterisation.\nThis talk is based on my paper with Thomas Bothner\, currently available in preprint on the arXiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.23362. \n\n*To request access to the Zoom room\, please contact Nathan Hayford at nhayford [ at ] umich.edu.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Picturing Aura: A History of Technical Images at the Crossroads of Science\, Art\, and Occultism
DESCRIPTION:Picturing Aura (MIT Press 2025) is a historical\, anthropological\, and philosophical study of modern efforts to visualize that hidden\, radiant force that envelops the living body and is known as the aura. This book traces the rise and global spread of modern instruments and techniques for visualizing auras\, from the late nineteenth century to the present day\, exploring how pictures of aura have been put to work in diverse domains of psychical and parapsychological research\, esotericism and occultism\, art photography\, and popular culture\, as well as the New Age market for alternative medicine and spiritual well-being. These histories—sometimes complementary\, sometimes conflicting—shaped by exchanges between professionals and amateurs\, scientists and occultists\, countercultural artists and entrepreneurs\, metropolitan figures and peripheral actors\, show how the aura functions as a boundary object: an ontologically plural entity amenable to the varied tasks of creating art\, healing bodies\, and mapping a hidden cosmos. My presentation will introduce some of the book’s key figures\, technologies\, and notable migrations of images\, while reflecting on the very endeavour of making the aura visible and the challenges it poses to established assumptions about science\, religion\, and art.\n\nJeremy Stolow is Professor of Communication Studies at Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. He works in the interdisciplinary field of “religion and media\,” where he conducts research on the religious\, esoteric\, and occult dimensions of technology\, as well as the technological and material dimensions of religion. In addition to Picturing Aura\, his publications include Orthodox by Design (California UP\, 2010)\, a study of contemporary Orthodox Jewish print culture and its political implications\; Deus in Machina (Fordham UP\, 2013)\, an edited volume exploring the relationship between religion and technology from a historical and transcultural perspective\; as well as several co-edited journal issues focusing on the genealogy of animation\, religious visibility and invisibility\, and “light” as a medium of religious practice and imagination.
