DESCRIPTION:What is a well-designed life? How do you find a career where you can thrive? Inspired by Stanford’s Designing Your Life curriculum\, this interactive\, four-week\, in-person series will teach master’s students principles for designing a fulfilling career. Participants must commit to attending all four sessions. The series includes brief homework assignments\, in-class discussions\, and out-of-class application activities. Space is limited\; participation will be capped at 30. This workshop is designed for master’s students. All sessions will take place in the Rackham Building. SUMMARY:Presentation:NERS Colloquium: Fusion at Columbia: Systems Design\, Industry Engagement\, and Fusion Technology
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCulminating in the recently announced launch of the Columbia Fusion Research Center\, Fusion at Columbia has been expanding into new directions and with new partners. This presentation will discuss a mix of fundamental research carried out at Columbia\, sponsored by the federal government\, and research in support of the growing private fusion sector\, sponsored directly by industry. Technical topics to be discussed will be in the area fusion systems design\, applied plasma physics in support of fusion industry\, and new initiatives in fusion technology applied to magnets\, blankets\, and fuel cycles. The role of partnerships will be emphasized\, whether in collaboration with industry\, national laboratories\, or international partners.\n\n\nBio:\nCarlos Paz-Soldan is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics and Director of the Fusion Research Center at Columbia University in the City of New York. He received his B.Sc.E degree in Engineering Physics from Queen’s University at Kingston in 2007 and his Ph.D degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. After his Ph.D he worked as a scientist at General Atomics in San Diego until he was appointed with tenure to Columbia in 2021. Prof. Paz-Soldan’s activities are motivated by the desire to solve the scientific and technological challenges standing in the way of harnessing controlled fusion energy on earth. He has contributed particularly to developing solutions for transient off-normal event control in magnetic fusion devices. Prof. Paz-Soldan is the recipient of the Marshall N. Rosenbluth Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Prize in 2013 and the Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research in 2021\, both from the American Physical Society. He became an APS fellow in 2024.\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics—from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy\, education\, and professional development—the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Specter of Discrimination: Employment-Contingent Mobility and the Anticipatory Recognition of Racism among Black Tech Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Workplace discrimination in professional occupations remains an important mechanism through which racial inequality is reproduced. Yet existing research tends to conceptualize discrimination through identifiable incidents or interactions\, leaving less understood how workers experience racialized treatment that is diffuse\, cumulative\, or difficult to translate into institutionally recognizable terms. In order to fill this gap\, this research draws on 140 in-depth interviews with college-educated Black professionals to investigate how workers perceive\, interpret\, and respond to racialized treatment in professional workplaces. Findings reveal a striking uncertainty among participants regarding assessments of discrimination and their broader accounts of workplace life. While participants described racialized comments\, differential evaluations\, heightened scrutiny\, exclusion\, disproportionate workloads\, and other forms of differential treatment that accumulated across interactions and organizational processes\, they often did so without producing a singular incident they considered sufficiently consequential\, provable\, or reportable as discrimination. Notably\, 35% of these accounts came from individuals who had reported experiencing little or no discrimination in a pre-interview survey. I conceptualize this diffuse organizational presence as the specter of discrimination: the pervasive sense that race structures how one is perceived and treated at work even when its effects cannot always be located within a singular\, discrete discriminatory event. The specter generates racialized interpretive and vigilant labor as workers scrutinize interactions and organizational decisions\, assess their cumulative implications\, anticipate future treatment\, and\, at times\, question whether what they experienced was racial discrimination at all. By shifting analytical attention from discrimination as a discrete event to racialization as an organizational presence that is experienced cumulatively across workplace life\, this study expands sociological understandings of how racial inequality is perceived\, navigated\, and reproduced in contemporary professional workplaces.

DESCRIPTION:All students interested in attending the Hong Kong Short-Term program with Global Initiatives must attend a group interview. Students who do not attend will not be eligible for consideration. Interview blocks are limited to 10 participants each. This interview must be completed before the application due date on September 30 at Noon EST. \nLate arrival to your group interview will not be permitted\, and you will be turned away. You may not leave early from your group interview. If you are unavailable to stay for the entirety of the 30 minute block\, please drop the session and register for a different time.\nPlease note: Thanks to the generosity of our donors\, this trip may include additional travel outside of Hong Kong. If you hold a passport from a country that is outside of the United States\, please be aware that you will be responsible for obtaining any tourist visa(s) you may need. HKUST will NOT sponsor you as a student and you will be ineligible for any type of student visa.
