SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Linguistics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a colloquium presented by Adrienne Tsikewa (University of California Riverside) in North Quad 2435 on Friday\, November 13\, 2026\, from 4-5:30 PM!\n\nTitle: “It could be a stepping stone”: Zunglish and language ideologies\n\nAbstract: Language mixing is a prevailing linguistic practice under conditions of language contact that has been extensively analyzed and theorized by linguists (e.g. Muysken 2000\, Bullock & Toribio 2009\, Hickey 2010). When one of the languages in contact is English\, language mixing results in a variety that “liberally blends elements from English and from one or more local languages” (Schneider 2016: 341). These hybrid English varieties are a global phenomenon and are often referred to by lexical blends that combine English and the local language or community name (e.g. Spanglish\, Chinglish\, Singlish). Due to the stigma frequently associated with hybrid English (Lambert 2018\, Schneider 2016)\, connotations associated with these terms are predominantly negative\, aligning with prevalent language purism ideologies or deficit-based language ideologies of language mixing as poor or broken English. Awareness and understanding of such language ideologies is critical to Native American language contexts\, as without this knowledge “scholars and researchers-both Native and non-Native-cannot hope to understand Native American languages and the ways speakers use them\, change them\, and renew them.”(Kroskrity & Field 2009:10)\n\nIn this talk\, I present one part of my larger dissertation study on bilingual language practices and ideologies in Zuni Pueblo\, New Mexico. My analysis focuses on language ideologies towards Zunglish\, or language mixing involving Zuni and English\, expressed during interviews with adult participants of various ages and with various levels of ability in the Zuni language. I show that some of the participants express ideologies of deficiency and language purism toward Zunglish\, while others view language mixing as a necessity and as a reflection of hon a:wan A:shiwi ‘our Zuni people’ living in two worlds. I conclude by reflecting on how these ideologies can hinder community members\, in particular younger generations\, from speaking Zuni and how valuing rather than disparaging bilingual practices is essential to creating the conditions for A:shiwi who wish to gain confidence in using the language.\n\nReferences:\nBullock\, Barbara E.\, and Almeida Jacqueline Toribio\, eds. 2009. SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Small Works: Prints & Book Objects from Detroit\, 2020–2026
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: October 27 - November 19\, 2026\nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm \n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. The work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.\n\nGallery Hours: The RC Art Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm during the academic year.\n\nVisitor Access: Access the gallery from the door located near the northwest corner of East Quadrangle on East University just across from Weiser Plaza. The door is open to patrons\, students and faculty during the gallery open hours.\n\nContact the Gallery: Email us at rc.artgallery@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.
