SUMMARY:Performance:Philippine Culture Night: Salinlahi
DESCRIPTION:Mabuhay! The Filipino American Student Association (FASA) proudly presents Philippine Culture Night (PCN) 2026: “Salinlahi” on Saturday\, November 14th\, 2026\, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at the Power Center!\n\nPCN is an event dedicated to showcasing Filipino and Filipino-American culture through music\, dance\, skits\, and so much more. This year’s theme\, “Salinlahi\,” meaning generation\, explores the beauty and power of Filipino storytelling and the many ways it has evolved and been preserved across generations.\n\nTo be Filipino is to be part of an enduring\, living narrative. As Filipinos and Filipino-Americans\, we often explore our cultural identity through the stories passed down to us by family\, community\, and tradition. This year's PCN seeks to honor Filipino storytelling\, from cultural dances to modern films and music. These stories are more than just memories of the past\; they are the means by which generations of Filipinos have preserved culture\, built community\, and shared what it means to be Filipino. Rooted in native traditions and drawing from foreign influences\, Filipino culture tells stories that reflect a history of adaptation and reclamation\, transforming the joys and hardships of the Filipino experience into powerful expressions of Filipino identity and agency. Through the performances in this year's show\, we hope to explore these stories across time\, deepen our understanding of the diverse narratives that make up Filipino culture\, and commemorate the voices that continue to carry them forward. Join us in celebrating these stories and the communities that keep them alive!\n\n“Salinlahi” features six FASA performances: Maglalatik\, Bulaklakan\, Folk Tinikling\, Choir\, Anyo\, and Modern Tinikling. We are also excited to welcome guest performances by Greenwood\, PACE-MI\, MiMSA\, BukoBop\, and KIDLAT!\n\nWe hope to see you there! Maraming salamat!

SUMMARY:Performance:The Verve Pipe
DESCRIPTION:Pop hooks\, alt-rock guitars\, and sharp songwriting\n\nWith a reputation for spectacular live performances\, the genesis of multi-platinum artist The Verve Pipe can be traced back to the early 90s when the principal members of two rival Michigan bands joined forces. After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio.\nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. The album also included ‘Colorful\,’ the emotive ballad featured in the film and soundtrack Rock Star\, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston and also co-starring lead singer Brian Vander Ark in his first major film role.\n\nIn addition to their success on radio\, TV and film\, sold-out concert dates throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia\, features in Spin and Rolling Stone and videos on MTV and VH1\, the band have made numerous television appearances\, including ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Late Night With David Letterman.’\nAfter an eight year hiatus\, The Verve Pipe were approached to submit an original song for a compilation album of children’s music. That session inspired A Family Album\, their critically acclaimed introduction to the world of children’s music\, as well as their follow up release\, Are We There Yet? Both albums contain music intended for the entire family\, with fun and inventive lyrics set to the memorable melodies the band is known for.\nIn 2014\, The Verve Pipe released their first rock album in over 13 years with Overboard\, a collection of ten new songs including ‘Crash Landing’\, ‘Hit and Run\,’ and the haunting title track ‘Overboard.’ This long incubating project brought a renewed energy and focus to this self-produced album that resulted in their most inspired writing and recording to date.\n\nThe Verve Pipe continue to tour\, performing both rock and kids shows throughout the U.S.\, including special appearances at Lollapalooza\, Austin City Limits Festival\, Hangout Music Festival\, Summer Stage in Central Park\, and many more.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Comics Beyond Sight
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit covers a variety of creative approaches to comics visual accessibility\, and by extension visual accessibility broadly. Those approaches range from multimedia (audio and textual descriptions) through multidimensional and emerging technologies strategies (3D printing\, haptics\, and screen-based mobile touch interfaces). It demonstrates that comics can be made accessible. Learn about the international efforts of innovators in the realm of comics accessibility for those who are blind or have low vision\, assembled by the Accessible Comics Collective at San Francisco State University (SFSU) with the expertise of blind access professionals. \n\nEmily Beitiks was the accessibility lead for the content creation of the exhibit. She is the co-director for the San Francisco Disability Cultural Center (the first civically funded disability culture center on the planet!)\, and prior to that\, the director of the Longmore Institute on Disability. \n\nNick Sousanis (SFSU)\, the lead creative organizer of the exhibit\, is a Detroit native and was the first person to draw his dissertation in comics format\, subsequently published as the graphic novel Unflattening.\n\nView the exhibit anytime the Hatcher Library is open\, and join us for an opening presentation on Friday\, October 2nd\, 1:00pm - 4:00pm.
