SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:When AI Gets It Wrong: Learning Generative AI Through Its Mistakes
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI tools often make mistakes\, especially with historical East Asian sources. This hands-on workshop\, led by Kwok-leong Tang from Harvard University\, uses those mistakes to explain how the technology works\, so that participants can decide when to trust it and when to use it.\n\nNo technical background is needed\, and you can attend in person or register to join via Zoom (https://myumi.ch/zNnZM). A laptop is required for in-person participants — the Hatcher Gallery Lab is equipped with laptops\, but please feel free to bring your own.\n\nWhen an AI tool gives a wrong answer\, there are two possible reasons: the model itself cannot do the task\, or we have not given it what it needs. The workshop teaches how to tell these apart. First\, we will run a small AI model on our own laptops and look inside it: how it reads text\, how it chooses each word\, and why it can sound certain and still be wrong. Next\, we will see how clearer instructions\, more context\, or a connected tool can fix some mistakes but not others. Finally\, we will practice a simple way to test an AI answer: ask the same question several times and check the results against a reliable source.\n\nKwok-leong Tang serves as the managing director of the Digital China Initiative and a lecturer for the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. By training\, he is a historian. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. in history and Asian Studies from Pennsylvania State University. In recent years\, he has focused on exploring the potential of new technologies in humanities research. He has organized and instructed workshops on adopting GenAI in Chinese studies and humanities research at Harvard and other institutions.\n\nThe Deep Dive into Digital and Data Methods for Chinese Studies series is sponsored by the U-M Library (Asia Library) and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:OGPS Research in Motion: Project Management for Biomedical Scientists
DESCRIPTION:Research rarely moves in a straight line. Experiments change\, priorities compete\, collaborators have different timelines\, and unexpected results can reshape the plan entirely. Yet researchers are still responsible for keeping complex projects moving forward.Research in Motion is a two-part professional development series designed to help graduate students and postdoctoral fellows apply practical project-management approaches to the realities of biomedical research. Participants will explore strategies for planning and prioritizing work\, coordinating projects\, communicating progress\, adapting when plans change\, and using emerging technologies responsibly. The series connects day-to-day research challenges with transferable professional competencies—including project management\, communication\, collaboration\, strategic planning\, documentation\, and professional judgment—that are valuable across careers in academia\, industry\, government\, and other sectors.Participants may attend either session independently or attend both to build a broader toolkit for managing research projects effectively. If you have any questions\, please reach out Dr. Ioannis Chremos (ichremos@umich.edu)\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:From Printed Page to Research Data: Building Humanities Tools with AI Agents
DESCRIPTION:Attend a live demonstration\, where Kwok-leong Tang\, Harvard University\, shows how AI coding agents\, such as Claude Code\, let a humanist build research tools by describing them in plain language\, without being a trained programmer.\n\nAttend in person or register to join via Zoom (https://myumi.ch/Ax23x). No laptop or setup is needed for in-person attendees.\n\nThe main demonstration is a full pipeline that turns printed materials into structured data: scanned pages go through OCR (turning page images into text)\, and the text then becomes a table of people\, places\, and dates\, each checked against reference databases such as Wikidata and CBDB (China Biographical Database Project). Dr. Tang will also show other tools he has built this way\, including a batch OCR tool\, a converter for historical Chinese\, Japanese\, and Korean dates\, a tool that suggests Library of Congress subject headings\, and classroom history games made from primary sources. Throughout\, we will look at how to check the agent's work and where this approach breaks down.\n\nFollowing the demonstration\, 3:45-5:00 pm\, Dr. Tang will host an optional office hour for in-person participants who are interested in discussing their own projects related to AI and East Asian studies. This informal session offers an opportunity to receive feedback\, explore possible approaches\, and consider both the potential and limitations of AI tools for your projects.\n\nKwok-leong Tang serves as the managing director of the Digital China Initiative and a lecturer for the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. By training\, he is a historian. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Ph.D. in history and Asian Studies from Pennsylvania State University. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Susan Najita)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nSusan Najita\, University of Michigan\n\nThis paper explores the establishment of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park in the post-annexation period\, two prominent newspaper serial publications of the saga of Pele\, the goddess of the volcano\, and her sister\, Hi‘iaka\, which reinvigorated connection to the place that would be brought under federal control. What can the tale--a repository for the sacred tradition of hula pele and its healing traditions-- tell us today\, in this moment of eco-urgency\, about relationships between bodies\, mele (songs)\, and places?\n\nSusan Najita is an associate professor of English and Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Her first book\, Decolonizing Cultures in the Pacific\, explored the ways that indigenous Pacific writers engage the traumatic history of colonization and empire. Her current project is entitled Genealogies of Place: Colonialism\, Embodiment\, and the Making of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. \n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded
