SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Halaloween x Michigan Medicine Panel | Fears of the Body: Processing Illness\, Death\, and Loss with Horror Movies
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, October 27\, 2026 at 5:30 PM in the Hussey Room in the Michigan League at the University of Michigan for the first-ever Halaloween panel collaboration between the Global Islamic Studies Center and Michigan Medicine’s Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine! An expert panel of pediatric\, geriatric\, hospice\, and palliative care medical doctors\, hospital chaplains\, and horror film scholars will discuss how the horror genre and horror movies can be tools for people dealing with illness\, grief\, death\, loss\, and shared fears that are both specific to and transcend religion and culture.\n\nPanelists will discuss: what can horror tell us about the fears that people bring with them when they encounter bodily illness and healthcare providers\, particularly when they\, their elders\, or their children are experiencing serious illness\, the process of dying\, ambiguous loss\, or anticipatory grief? Can Muslim and spiritually or religiously themed horror movies provide psychological catharsis and alleviate suffering?\n\nThis panel is ONLY in person. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP on this form: https://forms.gle/bkZC5NsLagDaf99w9\n\n\nMeet the panelists:\n\nDr. Adam Marks\, MD\, Clinical Professor of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine\; Medical Director\, Hospice Program and Adult Hospice\n\nDr. Nurah Omobola Lawal\, MD\, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics & Hospice and Palliative Medicine\n\nDr. Karla Mallette\, Professor of Italian and Mediterranean Studies\; Founder\, Halaloween\n\nChaplain LJ Brazier\, Michigan Medicine Spiritual Care Department\, Palliative Care\n\nChaplain Maryam Ashraf\, Michigan Medicine Spiritual Care Department\, Spiritual and Muslim Patient Care\n\nModerator: Dr. Aliyah Khan\, Director\, Global Islamic Studies Center\; Associate Professor of English & Afroamerican and African Studies\n\nThis panel is brought to you by the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC) in collaboration with the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan Medical School.\n\n___\n\nHalaloween Muslim Horror Film Festival Info:\n\nWelcome to the 8th annual Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival 2026!\n\nWhat is Halaloween? Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by\, for\, or about Muslims to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”\n\nThis year’s Halaloween 2026 film festival is a retrospective that brings back some of our Michigan community’s favorite Muslim horror films from the past few years. As usual\, the festival runs throughout October with a different movie screening and/or event every week. In addition to local theater screenings\, we are bringing you three community collaborations this year: with the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn\, with Michigan Medicine and the U-M Medical School\, and with the Brooklyn Detroit venue in Corktown!\n\nThe 2026 lineup: Halaloween starts off at the Arab American National Museum (AANM) in Dearborn on Thursday\, October 8\, with a screening of the Saudi found-footage film Madayen (2016). On October 12 and October 20\, head to the State Theatre in Ann Arbor for the Iranian film Under the Shadow (2016) and the Malaysian film Tiger Stripes (2023)\, respectively. On October 27\, we are collaborating with the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan Medical School to bring you an expert medical and film panel on “Fears of the Body: Processing Illness\, Death\, & Loss with Horror Movies.”\n\nHalaloween officially ends on the evening of October 29 at 9pm at the Brooklyn Detroit venue in Corktown\, Detroit\, with a screening of two Muslim horror short films: Aicha (directed by Sanaa El Alaoui\, Morocco\, 2025) and Enmity Djinn (directed by Mohamed Echkouna\, Mauritania\, 2023)\, followed immediately after by the special event “Those Between Worlds: A Jinn Dreamscape\,\" a Halaloween sampler with live music score in collaboration with Reginald Thiessen\, Victor Ghannam\, and Devil's Night Detroit!\n\nAlso check out our streaming Muslim horror films anytime on U-M Kanopy: the Senegalese folk horror film Saloum (2021)\, the witchy Tunisian film Dachra (2018)\, and the Iranian “vampire spaghetti Western” film A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014).\n\nThe festival is mostly in-person and free–but make sure to reserve tickets! In-person screenings will be first-come\, first-served\, with RSVPs strongly encouraged.\n\nWe are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies\, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating and other details.\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Halaloween Lineup:\n\nOctober 8: Madayen | Saudi Arabia | 2016 | 7:00 PM | Arab American National Museum\, Dearborn\nOctober 13: Under the Shadow | Iran | 2016 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\, Ann Arbor\n\nOctober 20: Tiger Stripes | Malaysia | 2023 | 7:00 PM | State Theatre\, Ann Arbor\n\nOctober 27: Halaloween x Michigan Medicine Panel: “Fears of the Body: Processing Illness\, Death\, and Loss with Horror Movies” | Hussey Room\, Michigan League\, University of Michigan\n\nOctober 29: “Those Between Worlds: A Jinn Dreamscape\": Halaloween Short Films and Live Music Score Retrospective at Devil's Night Detroit | Short films Aicha and Enmity Jinn | 7:00 PM | Brooklyn Detroit\, Corktown (venue). *This event is ticketed and not free. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Whose City? Street Art and the Performance of Belonging in Tbilisi\, Georgia
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Vandenberg Room (2nd floor) at the Michigan League for a presentation by Greta Uehling\, a 2025-26 Faculty Fellow with the Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS).\n\nStreet art is often understood as a form of cultural resistance in politically constrained societies like Georgia. Professor Greta Uehling will draw on ethnographic fieldwork in Tbilisi\, including interviews with artists\, activists\, and viewers supported to explore the forces that complicate its communicative potential. Uehling extends a Barthian approach that foregrounds the reception of street art and the contested meanings that emerge around it. In this talk\, she will explore the state’s appropriation of street-art aesthetics through government-sponsored projects\, as well as private citizens’ power to veto murals on their buildings. She will then turn to gender as a contested terrain where Georgia’s European aspirations meet enduring social norms. This research was supported by a Faculty Fellowship from the Center for World Performance Studies.\n\nPresented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies.\n\nFACULTY BIO\n\nhttps://ii.umich.edu/ii/people/all/u/uehling.html\n\n*If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies at cwps.information@umich.edu at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.*

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:PRISM Quartet with Andrew Bishop
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning PRISM Quartet performs a program of music by Roshanne Etezady\, Kristin Kuster\, Bill Ryan\, Bright Sheng\, Chris Potter\, and Don Byron. SMTD Professor Andrew Bishop will join the group as a guest artist. \n\nPRISM Quartet presents a program that travels from the factory floor to a pine forest and from Hollywood to China. Four of the works were commissioned by PRISM\, including Roshanne Etezady's *Inkling*\, a one-minute vignette written in 2004 for the ensemble's twentieth anniversary. As its title suggests\, it offers the merest hint of an idea\, and its clouds of sound showcase PRISM's flexibility and color. Don Byron's new *Quartet for Saxophones* is a fearless homage to classic film scores of the '50s and '60s\, from the title-sequence swagger of \"Saul Bass\" to a closing \"Fandango.\" Bright Sheng's *Old Tune Renewed* takes its name from a Chinese tradition in which performers reinvent well-known compositions as new works. Sheng builds his piece on a folk song from Northwestern China\, capturing the spirit of singing that rings through open valleys while imbuing it with his own voice. In selections from Chris Potter's epic *Improvisations*\, written for PRISM's Heritage/Evolution series and recorded on *Heritage/Evolution\, Volume 2*\, jazz saxophonist Andrew Bishop improvises over the quartet\, stepping into the solo role first shaped by Potter and Ravi Coltrane on the recording. The program's other two works have deep Michigan roots. Bill Ryan's *Tiny Machines*\, a set of miniatures inspired by the robotic assembly line at Ford's truck plant in Dearborn\, is heard in an arrangement commissioned by the Sinta Quartet. Kristin Kuster wrote *Red Pine* for the Sinta Quartet to mark Don Sinta's retirement from the University of Michigan. WNYC's John Schaefer calls it \"a sonic depiction of the simple beauty of the pine forests of Ontario.\" \n\n*This program is co-presented by the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance and New Sounds Music\, with support from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.*\n\nPRISM Quartet is:\nTimothy McAllister\, soprano saxophone (SMTD Professor of Saxophone)\nZach Shemon\, alto saxophone \nMatthew Levy\, tenor saxophone \nTaimur Sullivan\, baritone saxophone \n\nABOUT THE PRISM QUARTET\n\nIntriguing programs of great beauty and breadth have distinguished PRISM Quartet as one of America's foremost chamber ensembles. \"A bold ensemble that set the standard for contemporary-classical saxophone quartets\" (*The New York Times*)\, PRISM has performed at Carnegie Hall and with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center\, and has toured Latin America\, China\, and Russia under the auspices of USIA and USArtists International. A two-time recipient of the Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming\, PRISM has commissioned more than 400 works by eminent composers\, including Pulitzer Prize winners William Bolcom\, Jennifer Higdon\, Susie Ibarra\, Bernard Rands\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Julia Wolfe\, and Zhou Long\, and MacArthur Fellows George Lewis\, Bright Sheng\, and Miguel Zenón. PRISM's discography is extensive\, with nearly 40 releases on Albany\, BCM&D\, BMOP/Sound\, ECM\, innova\, Koch International\, Navona\, Naxos\, New Dynamic\, New Focus\, Orange Mountain Music\, and its own label\, XAS Records. *The Fifth Century*\, PRISM's ECM recording with The Crossing\, won a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance. PRISM was named by its alma mater\, the University of Michigan\, as the first recipient of the Christopher Kendall Award in recognition of its work in \"collaboration\, entrepreneurship\, and community engagement.\" PRISM Quartet performs exclusively on Selmer saxophones.
