If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of Va' Pensiero: Storie ambulanti (Walking Stories) (2013)\, followed by a conversation and Q&A with Ethiopian-Italian filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer.\n\nA leading voice in migrant cinema in Italy\, Yimer is also a co-founder of the Archivio delle Memorie Migranti\, a collective project dedicated to documenting migration from the perspectives of migrants and preserving their stories as part of Italy's contemporary cultural memory.\n\nVa' Pensiero follows the lives of Senegalese street vendors in Italy while examining anti-Black racism\, migration\, labor\, and everyday forms of exclusion. Beginning with the aftermath of the 2011 racist attack in Florence that killed two Senegalese men\, the film explores how migrant communities negotiate belonging within contemporary Italian society. Through multilingual testimony—including Italian\, Wolof\, and French—and observational documentary practice\, Va' Pensiero challenges conventional narratives of migration by foregrounding the voices and lived experiences of migrants themselves.\n\nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with Yimer about the making of Va' Pensiero\, documentary filmmaking as a form of witnessing and political storytelling\, and the representation of migration and Black life in contemporary Italy.\n\nThe event is part of “Migration\, Memory\, and the Politics of Witnessing: A Residency with Filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer\,” October 7–9\, 2026. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Amy Franceschini / Futurefarmers
DESCRIPTION:\n\nAmy Franceschini is an artist and designer whose work facilitates encounter\, exchange\, and tactile forms of inquiry by calling into question the \"certainties\" of a given time or place where a work is situated. An overarching theme in her work is a perceived conflict between \"humans\" and \"nature\". Her projects reveal the history and currents of contradictions related to this divide by challenging systems of exchange and the tools we use to \"hunt\" and \"gather\". Using this as a starting point\, she creates relational objects that invoke action and inquiry\; not only to imagine\, but also to participate in and initiate change in the places we live.\n\nIn 1995\, Franceschini founded Futurefarmers as a collaborative platform to consider the social\, political\, and environmental organization of space. Futurefarmers use various media to deconstruct systems to visualize and understand their intrinsic logics\; food systems\, public transportation\, education. Through this disassembly\, they find new narratives and reconfigurations that form alternatives to the principles that once dominated these systems.\n\nFuturefarmers work is based in enmeshed acts of wandering and material processes. In the context of public art works\, they cultivate public life in place\, rather than inserting pre-determined forms and concepts into public space. They do so through a process-led approach\,inviting materials and communities to arrive and intersect at a specific site or situation. Through time and the practiced presence of Futurefarmers\, the meeting place of people and materials transform from provisional arrangements into durable forms and functions of their work\n\nFranceschini is a 2009 Guggenheim Fellow\, a 2019 Rome Prize Fellow and a 2017 recipient of the Herb Alpert Award for Visual Arts. She is the author of A Variation on the Powers of Ten\, For Want of a Nail\, and\, most recently\, Silicon Forest in 2026. Franceschini received a BFA in Photography from San Francisco State University and an MFA from Stanford University. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nJaswinder Bolina is an American poet and essayist whose work frequently explores the intersections of language\, race\, and the South Asian immigrant experience. Born in Chicago to Punjabi immigrant parents\, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago\, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan\, and a Ph.D. in English from Ohio University. Bolina currently resides in Florida\, where he serves as Chair of the Department of English and Creative Writing and teaches in the M.F.A. program at the University of Miami.\n\nOften blending personal narrative with politics and metaphysics\, Bolina’s poetry is noted for its investigation of the “perceptual and sonic ground” of modern life. He is the author of four full-length poetry collections\, including his debut *Carrier Wave* (2007)—adapted from his M.F.A. thesis at the University of Michigan—*Phantom Camera *(2013)\, and *The 44th of July* (2019). His most recent collection\, *English as a Second Language and Other Poems* (2023)\, which was awarded the 2025 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award from Claremont Graduate University\, continues his deep dive into cultural identity. Beyond poetry\, Bolina gained significant recognition for his 2020 essay collection\, *Of Color*\, which provides a poignant examination of racial perception and the complexities of the American dream. \n\nBolina’s writing has been recognized with numerous awards. His accolades include the Green Rose Prize for *Phantom Camera*\, the Colorado Prize for Poetry for *Carrier Wave*\, and a long-listing for the PEN America Open Book Award for *The 44th of July*. DESCRIPTION:Every 16 years\, Michigan voters are asked whether to dig into the state’s constitution and make edits in what’s known as a Constitutional Convention\, or Con-Con. But what would a Con-Con actually look like? And what can voters understand about past Con-Cons that will help them say yes or no on this year’s ballot? \n\nThis fall\, on November 3\, it will be on Michigan ballots as “Proposal 1.”\n\nIf voters say yes to Proposal 1\, that would begin the process of holding a constitutional convention – or “Con-Con.”\n\nDuring a Con-Con\, delegates can make changes to the state constitution.\n\nBut what would a Con-Con actually look like?
