SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Irrational Decision: How We Gave Computers the Power to Choose for Us
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Mathematicians and engineers of the 1940s set out to design machines capable of making critical decisions in the face of uncertainty. In less than a decade\, they developed a suite of powerful mathematical technologies\, including information theory\, linear programming\, game theory\, and neural networks. These tools didn’t merely lay the foundation for contemporary computer science but became the foundation of a new definition of rationality itself\, reshaping how we judge human decision making. The Irrational Decision traces how a computational framework designed for machines came to define rationality for people in economics\, public policy\, and popular culture.\n\nThis talk will explore success stories in accelerating computers\, regulating pharmaceuticals\, and deploying electronic commerce. The successes reveal a common pattern. Automated decision systems thrive in well-defined spaces with clear rules and measurable goals. However\, the same systems produce results ranging from brittle to absurd outside those controlled settings. Given these strengths and limitations\, the talk will close by asking how we can put these tools to work without surrendering human agency and judgment.\n\nBio: Benjamin Recht is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California\, Berkeley. Ben studies the foundations of machine learning\, be they mathematical\, statistical\, and computational\, or philosophical\, sociological\, and historical. He is the author of three books: Optimization for Modern Data Analysis (2022) with Stephen J. Wright\, Patterns\, Predictions\, and Actions (2022) with Moritz Hardt\, and The Irrational Decision (2026). He also spends too much time blogging at argmin.net.

If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Piano hosts a guest lecture by Todd Van Kekerix\, Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of Houston and Artist-in-Residence\, Center for Performing Arts Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital.\n\n*What does it take to bring music to the bedside - and do it well?*\n \nDrawing on his work at Houston Methodist Hospital\, Todd Van Kekerix explores the artistic\, interpersonal\, and practical skills pianists need to serve effectively in healthcare settings. Patient stories\, video examples\, feedback\, and outcomes data make the work concrete while revealing what is rewarding\, surprising\, and challenging at the bedside. \n\nThe session considers repertoire flexibility\, lead-sheet realization\, on-the-spot arranging\, emotional presence\, and bedside manner\, along with the practical realities of identifying hospital partners\, understanding Artist-in-Residence structures\, preparing for patient interactions\, and navigating liability and logistics. \n\nA live request-and-response demonstration will show how musical decisions are made in real time\, followed by discussion of how these capacities can be cultivated through studio class\, pedagogy coursework\, and community engagement. DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis.
