SUMMARY:Film Screening:U-M History Film Series: Ten Times Better + About Face
DESCRIPTION:Join the History Department on the evening of Tuesday\, November 17\, for a screening of two documentary shorts\, Ten Times Better (2024) and About Face (2025)\, followed by a conversation with director Jennifer Lin. This event will take place in the Screening Room at the Michigan Theater starting at 5:30 pm.\n\nFollowing each film\, there will be a panel discussion with Lin\, moderated by Ian Shin (History) and Fangfei Miao (Dance). \n\nTen Times Better - Runtime 30m\n\nFrom ballet to Broadway to blackjack\, George Lee of Las Vegas has seen it all in his 89 years\, but never had his moment to shine. Until now. This short documentary elevates George’s contribution to dance\, including originating the Chinese role in George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and working with director Gene Kelly in Flower Drum Song. Plans are underway for a national PBS broadcast of the film\, which has been featured in the New York Times and AARP magazine.\n\nAbout Face - Runtime 1hr\n\nThis feature-length documentary spotlights Phil Chan and Georgina Pazcoguin\, two NYC dancers of Asian descent who founded the Final Bow for Yellowface movement to jettison offensive Asian stereotypes\, including dancing in yellowface\, from classical ballet. The pair is taking on entrenched tradition and political pushback as they shine a critical spotlight on The Nutcracker and other beloved classics like La Bayadere in this vivid account of cultural missteps and creative evolution.\n\nJennifer Lin is a veteran journalist\, who was stationed in Beijing\, New York and Washington\, D.C. for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Beyond Yellowface is her third film project. In 2013\, she produced Geil of Doylestown: Forgotten Explorer. In 2021\, she produced and co-directed Beethoven in Beijing\, which premiered nationally on PBS’s Great Performances and was a finalist for the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film. \n\nFangfei Miao\, an international dance theorist\, choreographer\, and dancer\, is Assistant Professor of Dance in the School of Music\, Theatre\, & Dance at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, where she teaches both seminar and physical practice courses. Miao’s scholarly research weaves dance and performance studies\, Chinese and East Asian studies\, and critical inquiries into globalization. Her in-progress monograph examines the productive historical “mis-steps” engendered by Sino-US cross-cultural dance transmissions in Reform-Era China (1978-the present).\n\nIan Shin is a social and cultural historian of the United States and Associate Professor of History and American Culture. His research and teaching focus on Asian American history and on the history of the U.S. in the Pacific World between 1850 and 1950. Shin comes to this work as a first-generation American who was born in Hong Kong\, grew up in California\, and spent the past decade and a half on the East Coast. His work is guided not only by his training in historical methods but also by my dedication to critical race and ethnic studies. He is the author of Imperial Stewards: Chinese Art and the Making of America's Pacific Century (Stanford University Press\, 2025).\n\nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"Don't Let The Sun\": Chamber Choir & University Choir
DESCRIPTION:WORLD PREMIERE\n\nComposer Theodore Wiprud and librettist Richard Wesley have created an oratorio examining a widespread expression of racism in America\, documented in the landmark book *Sundown Towns* by the late sociologist and historian James Loewen.\n\nConducted by Director of University Choirs Eugene Rogers\, *Don’t Let the Sun*\, for chorus\, vocal soloists\, and orchestra\, will run approximately 90 minutes (plus intermission). It tells the story of “sundown towns” where residents drove out or actively excluded specific groups from residing there (from being in a town after sunset) through ordinances\, signs\, and acts of violence. Sundown towns excluded Black people\, and in some cases\, Chinese Americans\, Jewish people\, Native Americans\, Latinas/os and other racialized groups. Since the 19th century these towns have been prevalent throughout the U.S. and especially in the Midwest\, West\, and East.\n\nThese policies did not completely disappear over time. The attitudes that drove them morphed into housing “covenants\,” redlining\, discrimination within the post-war FHA and discrimination in the granting of bank loans. The results of these decisions and policies haunt our country to this very day. *Don’t Let the Sun* will shine a light on this difficult chapter in America’s ever-expanding history\, and help audiences engage productively with “hard” histories.\n\nMr. Loewen’s *Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism* is the definitive history of these phenomena. Another source is the “History and Social Justice” website launched by Dr. Loewen\, which has had nearly one million visitors over the last three years\, and continues to amass cases and first-hand accounts. Librettist Richard Wesley’s text is inspired by the voices of individuals impacted by sundown towns and more recent policies\, examining the harm experienced by both the excluded and the excluders\; and recent efforts by many sundown towns to reckon with their past and shape a better future.\n\n*\"Don't Let the Sun\" was commissioned with support from an Arts Initiative Project Support (AIPS) grant\, an Arts Research: Incubation and Acceleration (ARIA) grant\, the U-M Brehm Choral Commissioning Fund and generous support from the Department of History\, the Department of American Culture\, and the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance.*\n\n–––\n*Parking / Traffic alert for attendees:*\nhttps://smtd.umich.edu/2026-construction\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS\n\nTHEODORE WIPRUD is a composer\, an educator\, and a researcher on the musical community’s work toward equity and inclusion. Many of his works address social issues\, including vocal works like *American Journal* (Robert Hayden) and *A Georgia Song* (Maya Angelou)\; and orchestral works like his Violin Concerto *“Katrina”\; Wind of Many Voices*\, responding to the troubled history of South Dakota\; and a second Violin Concerto *“on the brink”* exploring climate grief and climate action. \n\nRICHARD WESLEY is a playwright and screenwriter whose many plays deal with social-historical moments. He wrote the libretto for Anthony Davis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning opera *Central Park Five*. Mr. Wesley has received numerous awards including the NAACP Image Award for Best Picture (for *Uptown Saturday Night*) and the National Black Theater Festival’s August Wilson Playwright Award. He teaches at New York University.
