SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The DSI Reading Room | Smart as a City: The Politics of Test-Bed Urbanism with Burcu Baykurt
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean for a city to be \"smart\"? Smart as a City draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where Google piloted a citywide gigabit network and city officials launched several smart city projects in the 2010s. Through cases including public-housing residents’ quiet refusal of “free” gigabit internet\, the city’s turn to predictive analytics that largely confirmed the obvious\, and public–private strategies for managing failure without naming it\, the book reframes test-bed urbanism as a mode of local governance that works through civic aspiration\, deliberate ignorance\, and municipal politics. It argues that urban disparities are not an unintended consequence of the smart city\; they are the foundation upon which it is built. \nThis event is in partnership with the Urban Tech Collective (UTC) at the University of Michigan’s Digital Studies Institute. UTC convenes U-M faculty and students from various disciplines investigating the imaginaries\, design\, and use of digital technologies within urban everyday life. UTC investigates topics related to physical and digital spaces\; mediated representations of urban space and urban communities\; digital rights and inequalities\; datafication\; urban intelligences\; and social change. The collective meets throughout the academic year to share research\, methodologies\, and best practices for the study of technology and urban life\, to host speakers\, and reimagine the role of urban technology scholarship\, design\, and policy in affecting more equitable\, sustainable futures.The DSI Reading Room is a conversation series featuring new books by Digital Studies Institute faculty and guest authors. Through public discussions\, we explore emerging scholarship and the ideas shaping technology\, culture\, media\, and society. Burcu Baykurt is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research explores how digital infrastructures reshape and perpetuate urban inequalities. She is the author of Smart as a City: The Politics of Test-Bed Urbanism and coeditor of Soft-Power Internationalism: Competing for Cultural Influence in the 21st-Century Global Order.We strive to make our events accessible to all participants. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Entropy-enabled topological edge states in mechanical lattices
DESCRIPTION:Thermal fluctuations can destroy or stabilize ordered phases\, but can they also generate topological bands and boundary modes? A central obstacle is that fluctuations reshape excitation spectra while simultaneously broadening them\, potentially washing out topological gaps. Here we demonstrate an entropic mechanism for band topology in anharmonic mechanical lattices. Thermal fluctuations renormalize lattice interactions\, inducing topological transitions and the emergence of topological edge states. We show\, through the agreement between analytic theory and molecular dynamics simulations\, that bandgap can close and reopen with switched topological winding numbers\, as temperature increases\, and demonstrate unambiguous signatures of topological edge states.  These results connect entropic rigidity with topological band theory and establish a route to topological excitations that emerge upon heating.

DESCRIPTION:Why is reproduction a religious issue? What can religious values teach us about reproduction\, and what role\, if any\, should those values have in public policy and personal health? This conversation\, part of the Samantha Woll Dialogues\, brings together experts on religion\, health\, and law to discuss these issues before a public audience. The conversation will be moderated by Lisa Harris\, director of Michigan Medicine’s new Center for History\, Humanities\, Arts\, Social Sciences\, and Ethics in Medicine. Panelists will include Terri Laws (University of Michigan\, Dearborn)\, whose scholarship focuses on the relationship between religion and health\;  Rabea Benhalim (University of Colorado Law School)\, who publishes on abortion in Jewish and Islamic law\; and Cara Rock-Singer (University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor)\, whose book\, *Gestating Judaism: The Corporeal Technologies of American Jewish Religion*\, shows how religious tradition is transmitted through reproductive practices.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Olayami Dabls
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFor decades\, Detroit artist Olayami Dabls has explored the intersections of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing through sculpture\, storytelling\, and material culture. Founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African American perspectives\, drawing upon traditions in which materials convey identity and serve as messages for healing and protection. In 2022\, he received the prestigious Kresge Artist Award for his innovative practice and enduring legacy within his community and beyond. \n\nJoining Dabls in conversation is Nichole Christian\, a writer\, editor\, and native Detroiter. Since 2019\, she’s worked as the independent creative director\, editor\, and lead writer of the Kresge Eminent Artists monograph series\, produced annually by the Kresge Foundation. The series includes The Culture Keeper\, which in 2022 chronicled the ongoing legacy of Olayami Dabls and his African Bead Museum. Christian is the co-author of the award-winning public art book\, Canvas Detroit. Previously\, she has worked as a staff writer for publications including The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, Time magazine\, and the Detroit Free Press. She is currently the managing editor for Outlier Media. \n\nCoinciding with his Penny Stamps Speaker Series appearance\, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery will present Olayami Dabls: Grand Vision from September 22–October 28\, 2026. The exhibition features Dabls’work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from the MBAD African Bead Museum and his collections. The project also includes the installation of his iconic outdoor sculpture\, Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners\, on the University of Michigan campus from September 22–October 12\, 2026.\n\nPresented in partnership with the U-M Institute for the Humanities.\n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books.
