DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Register for the Zoom webinar at: http://myumi.ch/PbkD4\n\nThere is little that connects the Chinese Communist Party\, British Conservative Party\, Kenyan leadership\, Silicon Valley right-wing\, and elites in post-Soviet states. But they all exhibit an acute fascination with founding Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew\, invoking select strands of his political thought and practice to legitimate their own political projects or imaginaries. Yet\, while interest in Lee outside of Singapore is consistently growing\, within Singaporean society there is a growing sense of exhaustion and indifference in appealing to his figure – especially when it is perceived as a cynical means to derive political profit for his long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). Using this observation as a launching pad\, this lecture explores the contradictions of Lee’s legacy and develops rudiments to pursue a global history of Lee Kuan Yew\, bringing his international reception and footprints within a single frame. This entails treating Lee as a global figure of world-historical importance\, situating his political thought\, movements\, and interventions within global trends and networks. While this global approach magnifies Lee’s stature\, it also amplifies the less comfortable aspects of his legacy: his “original sin” is no longer the detention without trial\, but his role in legitimizing the bloody Vietnam War. A global history of Lee thereby presents intensified contradictions to grapple with.\n\nQuah Say Jye is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University. He is a political theorist of postcolonial modernity\, with a focus on Southeast Asia. SUMMARY:Presentation:NERS Colloquium: Extending Electron Emission Models Beyond Planar\, Single Mechanism Devices
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Allen L. Garner\, a professor of nuclear engineering at Purdue University and U-M NERS alumnus\, will discuss new mathematical approaches to modeling electron emission and current flow in complex geometries. His research explores how different electron emission mechanisms interact with space-charge limitations\, offering alternatives to computationally expensive simulations. These models have applications in high-power microwaves\, directed energy\, radiation devices\, and semiconductor manufacturing.\n\nAbstract:\nElectron emission physics is important in high-power microwaves\, directed energy\, high-power radiation devices\, and sheath physics in plasma processing in the semiconductor industry. Electrons may be emitted due to strong electric fields by field emission (FE) or high cathode temperatures by thermal emission (TE). Jensen developed a mathematical framework to link FE\, TE\, and photoemission. Regardless of source\, only so much current may be emitted into a gap. The resulting space-charge-limited current density (SCLCD) was derived over a century ago for a one-dimensional (1D) vacuum planar diode by Child and Langmuir\, while Mott and Gurney derived an analogous law for semiconductors three decades later. Extensions to more realistic geometries and intermediate conditions between the Child-Langmuir (CLL) and Mott-Gurney (MGL) laws\, as well as FE and TE\, are challenging\, often requiring detailed and computationally expensive simulations. This seminar describes approaches to model multidimensional\, nonplanar geometries with multiple emission mechanisms and apply these models to practical conditions. \nFirst\, we summarize geometric approaches to generalize SCLCD calculations. We apply variational calculus (VC) to extremize the current in the gap\, conformal mapping of the space-charge electric potential to translate the solution from Cartesian coordinates to the geometry of interest\, and Lie point symmetries (i.e.\, point transformations) to derive exact solutions for multiple 1D geometries. We further derive a universal relationship between vacuum electric potential and space-charge limited potential that yields SCLCD for multidimensional diodes with any geometry and apply it to derive the SCLCD for a tip-to-tip geometry and for arrays of tips\, demonstrating reasons for disagreements between theory and particle-in-cell simulations. Since all these approaches depend on electric potential\, we demonstrate the importance of the spatial variation of electric potential in a collisional gap and how it relates to the collision frequency. We further demonstrate the utility of these equations to calculate the collision frequency in a gap.\nNext\, we describe our application of “nexus” theory to describe the transition between source currents (e.g.\, FE or TE) and the SCLCD. We combine nexus theory with point transformation to generalize SCLCD and the transitions between the source currents and SCLCD for nonplanar diodes. Using current-voltage curves from molecular dynamics simulations\, we demonstrate how to combine nexus theory and charge-free electric potential to calculate emission area for any mechanism and geometry.\n\nBio: \nDr. Allen L. Garner received the B.S. degree (with high honors) in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign\, in 1996. He received an M.S.E. in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan in 1997\, an M.S. in electrical engineering from Old Dominion University in 2003\, and a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan in 2006. He was an active duty Naval officer from 1997 to 2003 and is currently a Captain in the United States Navy Reserves. From 2006 to 2012\, he was an electromagnetic physicist at GE Global Research Center. He joined the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University in 2012\, where he is currently a Professor.\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers\, industry experts\, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students\, faculty\, and guests. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Place as Method\, Theory\, and Responsibility: Rethinking Scientific Inquiry for Complex Social Issues
DESCRIPTION:The challenge: New data and approaches to study complexity in the social world has often been without a concurrent focus on the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, attention to epistemic lens\, and integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. Further\, the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, discipline-specific training\, and short-term productivity metrics\, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World\, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest.Using research on place as the case study\, discussion topics will include:Complex thinking about the social worldThe contribution of the humanities the study of the social worldEpistemic lens and research transparencyTheories\, frameworks\, and the limits of traditional causal inferenceThe draw and danger of cool new dataAddressing the challenges of the academic model of sciencePresentations on the science of place will include:The relational nature of place in population social inequalitiesThe role of history in shaping placeThe racialization of place\; the spatialization of racePlace as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalitiesApproaches to testing (causal) ideas around place
