SUMMARY:Performance:Tiffany Ng & Bjorn Brolin-Olson\, carillon
DESCRIPTION:Tiffany Ng & Bjorn Brolin-Olson perform on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Adderley Positive Research Incubator: Preeti Varma
DESCRIPTION:Adderley Positive Research Incubator\nHosted by: Center for Positive Organizations\n\n\"How Workers Become Captivated by an Imagined Future\"\nFeatured Scholar: Preeti Varma\, INSEAD\n\nDescription: In an ethnographic study of employees at Multivex (MV)\, an AI development company building frontier multimodal AI models\, I present a theoretical model describing the social construction of aspirational intoxication\, defined as a state of captivation with an imagined future. I find that workers confront a tension arising from the simultaneous promise and threat of advanced AI to society’s future—a tension amplified by accelerating technological capabilities and nested competitive races. This tension generates an intractable anxiety (moral\, existential\, and competitive) about the future. Rather than avoiding or accepting this anxiety\, workers engage in three cognitive processes—intellectualizing narratives\, abstracting identity\, and gamifying reality—that transform anxiety into fascination\, significance\, and thrill. This study helps explain how workers become increasingly invested in realizing transformative technological futures\, and how such investment reinforces the competitive dynamics that accelerate their development and sustain technological progress.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Citations Beyond “Playing the Game:” Building a Robust Citation Policy
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will bring a personal research project to assess or map out a citation policy that reflects their commitments and values.\n\nSara Ahmed tells us that “citations can be feminist bricks: they are the materials through which\, from which\, we create our dwellings.” Our citation policies “affec[t] the kind of house” in which we spend our intellectual lives (Living a Feminist Life 15). In this workshop\, participants begin by reflecting on their various commitments and values before engaging in a discussion of the shared reading. The session concludes with individual and collaborative workshop time targeting feasibility in their designs. Participants assess citations in a recent project to determine the extent to which they have used citations to build the kind of “dwelling” they want to occupy and explore options for further renovating. Alternatively\, participants may bring a project they have not yet researched fully in order to map a citation policy for that project.\n\nQualifiers: This is a workshop especially designed for those in the humanities\, social and applied sciences. Before the workshop\, we ask that you read an eight-page excerpt (sent to those who register) from Ahmed’s Living a Feminist Life.\n\nPresented by April Conway and Laura Clapper\, Sweetland Center for Writing Faculty

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Horizon-Scale Modeling of Black Holes
DESCRIPTION:Recent developments have ushered in a new era in the field of black hole astrophysics\, providing our first direct view of the remarkable environment near black hole event horizons. These observations have enabled astronomers to confirm long-standing ideas on the physics of gas flowing into black holes with temperatures that are hundreds of times greater than at the center of the Sun. In this talk I will describe the successes and challenges of theoretical models of black hole accretion on event horizon scales in the context of these observational advances. I will conclude with ideas on how the interplay of theory and observations can be used to measure the spin of black holes and test the long-standing prediction that the rotational energy of black holes can be extracted to power astrophysical jets.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar | The Psyche Mission and Advances in Electric Propulsion at JPL
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe Psyche spacecraft was launched on October 23\, 2023 from Kennedy Space Center on a Falcon Heavy Rocket. The launch began the spacecraft’s 2.2 billion mile journey to the asteroid 16 Psyche in the outer part of the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The Psyche asteroid\, composed of over 50% metal by weight is possibly the metal core of a planetesimal whose formation was interrupted early in the solar system by collisions with other bodies that created the asteroid belt. The Psyche spacecraft is a hybrid. Maxar/Intuitive-Machines\, now known for taking photographs from space over Ukraine\, fabricated the spacecraft bus based on heritage hardware\, and JPL installed scientific payload\, avionics and autonomous flight software for deep space operation. This $900M NASA mission is the first spacecraft to use Hall thrusters in deep space to rendezvous and orbit the asteroid\, and recently completed a Mars Gravity Assist on the way to rendezvous in 2029. A 2-year science program will determine the asteroid’s composition and remnant magnetic field to determine if this unique object really is a planetary core…and what that actually looks like. The talk will describe the Psyche mission and provides updates on electric propulsion at JPL.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Dan M. Goebel received a B.S. in physics in 1977\, an M.S. in EE in 1978\, and a Ph.D. in applied plasma physics in 1981 from UCLA. He is a Fellow and Senior Research Scientist at JPL and an Adjunct Professor of Aerospace Engineering at UCLA. At JPL he is the Chief Engineer of the Psyche Mission and responsible for the development of advanced spacecraft technologies. Dr. Goebel is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, the National Academy of Inventors\, and Fellow of the AIAA\, IEEE\, and APS. He is the author of over 300 technical and conference papers\, two textbooks on Electric Propulsion\, and holds 60 patents.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person\, with livestream on Zoom. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry Seminar: Stable map resolutions of Richardson varieties
DESCRIPTION:Given a circle action S on a projective variety X\, we introduce the \"stable map quotient\" using Kontsevich's space of stable maps of curves. In the case that X is a Richardson variety (the intersection of a Schubert with an opposite Schubert variety)\, generally very singular\, the quotient is nonetheless smooth! I'll use this to give a log resolution of Richardson varieties\, and describe the dual simplicial complex to the anticanonical sncd boundary.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A New Approach for the Continuous Time Kyle-Back Strategic Insider Equilibrium Problem
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider a continuous-time Kyle-Back model which is a game between an insider and a market maker. The existing literature typically focuses on constructing equilibria with a PDE approach\, which requires certain Markovian structures. We characterize all equilibria through a coupled system of forward-backward SDEs. In particular\, when the time duration is small\, we show that the FBSDE is well-posed\, and therefore the game has a unique equilibrium. Moreover\, this unique equilibrium may be non-Markovian and thus not attainable via the PDE approach. We next study the set value of the game\, which roughly speaking is the set of insider's values over all equilibria and thus is by nature unique. Finally\, we characterize the set value through a level set of a certain standard HJB equation.\nIn the second part of the talk\, we apply the new approach to the Kyle-Back model with dynamic legal risk and large numbers of noise traders. In this setting\, the insider chooses a strategy that conceals his identity within a large volume of surrounding trades and concentrates on medium-sized trades. We establish an intensity-based mathematical framework for explaining the interconnections between insider trading and stealth trading. When the number of noise traders becomes large\, the price impact of the insider asymptotically vanishes\, and consequently the stochastic game becomes deterministic optimizations\, which also carry implications for regulatory investigations and sanctions.\n\nThe results above include the joint work with Weixuan Xia and with Jianfeng Zhang.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SAPAC GROWE: Engendering Respectful Communities Workshops - SY26 - 27
DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions!
