SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Measuring Gravity by Dropping Atoms
DESCRIPTION:Leveraging the nature of quantum phenomena\, quantum technologies are advancing rapidly in computing\, communication\, and sensing. Quantum inertial sensors based on light-pulse atom interferometry are powerful tools for precision measurements\, navigation\, geoscience\, and civil engineering. By contrast to classical sensors\, atom interferometers use photon momentum to coherently split and recombine matter waves. Since the laser wavelength precisely determines photon momentum\, atom interferometers are highly accurate and have demonstrated unprecedented sensitivity and stability. In this talk\, I will present compact and versatile atom interferometers for measuring the local gravity field and sensing multi-axis accelerations and rotations. With simplicity and sensitivity\, our technology paves the way for deploying quantum sensors in field applications.\n\nBio: Dr. Xuejian Wu joined the Physics Department at Rutgers University-Newark in January 2021. From 2015 to 2020\, he was a postdoctoral scholar in the Physics Department at the University of California\, Berkeley. In January 2015\, Dr. Wu received his PhD from Tsinghua University\, China. Dr. Wu serves as an associate editor for Optics Express and an editorial board member for Atoms.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Colloquium: Heat\, wave\, and Schrödinger dynamics of Gibbs measures
DESCRIPTION:Gibbs measures were first introduced in statistical mechanics\, where they have been used to describe statistical equilibria of physical systems. In recent years\, there has been significant interest in the dynamics of Gibbs measures under heat\, wave\, and Schrödinger equations. In the first part of the talk\, we will discuss the invariance of Gibbs measures under the cubic nonlinear wave equation. In the second part of the talk\, we will then discuss the global well-posedness of the stochastic Yang--Mills heat flow. \n\nThe talk is based on joint works with Y. Deng\, A. Nahmod\, and H. Yue\, and separately with S. Cao\, M. Hairer\, and W. Zhao.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robotics Department Seminar Series: Towards Personalized AI Assistants
DESCRIPTION:Robotics Department Seminar Series (https://robotics.umich.edu/events/robotics-seminar-series/)\nSpeaker: Reid Simmons\, Research Professor\, Robotics and Computer Science\, Carnegie Mellon University\nTitle: \"Towards Personalized AI Assistants\"\nDate: Tuesday\, November 2\, 2026\nTime: 4:00 - 5:00 pm ET\nLocation: FRB 2300 + Zoom\nZoom Link: https://myumi.ch/9JjZ7\nMeeting ID: 910 7047 6728\nPasscode: 575785\n\nAbstract: As the population ages\, the need grows for AI agents to assist people to remain independent for longer. Older adults are typically set in their ways\, so AI agents should adapt to their ways of doing things\, rather than the other way around. To that end\, we are exploring various approaches to learning to personalize assistive agents\, including the use of bandit algorithms\, foundational models\, neuro-symbolic architectures\, and theory of mind. This talk will present our approaches and results in several assistive areas\, including meal preparation and exercise coaching\, as well as work in learning policies from humans. Much of the research is being supported by AI-CARING\, an NSF-sponsored Institute devoted to developing AI technologies to help older adults with cognitive and physical decline remain in their homes.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Reid Simmons is a Research Professor in the Robotics Institute and Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his PhD from MIT in Artificial Intelligence\, and since coming to CMU in 1988\, his research has focused on developing self-reliant robots that can autonomously operate over extended periods of time in unknown\, unstructured environments\, and on human-robot social interaction\, especially non-verbal communication through affect\, proxemics\, motion\, and gesture. He is co-PI and Research Director for the NSF-sponsored AI-CARING Institute. Dr. Simmons is an author of over 250 publications on AI\, Robotics\, and Human-Robot Interaction and has graduated 25 PhD students. He previously served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation\, where he oversaw the National Robotics Initiative and initiated the Smart and Autonomous Systems program. In 2018\, Dr. Simmons helped found the first-in-the-nation standalone undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence and currently serves as its program director. He is a Fulbright Scholar\, a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence\, a Senior Member of IEEE\, and was an ONR Summer Faculty Fellow in 2022.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:FYRST Workshops 2026 - 2027
DESCRIPTION:If you are only seeing one workshop\, please SIGN-IN and refresh the Sessions page! If still having issues\, click this link. \nFirst-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required\, in-person\, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment\, communication\, and boundary setting. However\, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming\, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”\nOur workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles\, including time for self-reflection\, small group sharing\, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive. \n“Can I request accommodations?”\nWe considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However\, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions. \n“I missed my workshop\, what should I do ?”\nOur team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for\, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case\, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule. \n“I have had gender-based violence training before\, can I get this requirement waived?”\nAs this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind\, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature\, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject\, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student. \n“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student\, do I still have to attend?\"\nYes\, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers\, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate\, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.\n“I still have questions! Who should I contact?\"\nPlease contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Global Wellposedness for the Hele-Shaw Problem with Point Injection
DESCRIPTION:We study the two-dimensional Hele-Shaw problem with point injection for star-shaped domains. We reduce the system to a nonlocal parabolic equation of the interface\, and for arbitrary Lipschitz initial interface away from the source\, we prove global well-posedness of the interface equation in a strong sense. We also introduce a viscosity-solution framework for the interface equation and relate it to the classical viscosity theory for the Hele-Shaw problem.
