DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for faculty\, advisors\, and staff who work with graduate students on professional development\, resumes\, fellowship essays\, networking outreach\, and interview prep. Most institutional guidance on generative AI is either policy-based (what's permitted) or tool-based (how to prompt)\, leaving advisors unprepared for the conversation that actually happens when a student arrives with AI-assisted materials\, an unclear sense of authorship\, or unspoken concerns about whether their use is allowed. Using the Explore-Build-Connect-Refine framework (published in Inside Higher Ed\, October 2025)\, participants will practice inquiry moves such as Does this reflect your actual experience?\, Can you defend this claim?\, and Does this sound like you? These moves ground advising in listening\, perspective-taking\, and critical reflection rather than adjudication. As a heritage site\, the Memorial Park for Women Laborers elucidates how “history” and “memory” are not simply about the past but part of a forward-looking process that emerges from the social\, political\, and economic needs of the present\, legitimized and validated through its associations with the past.\n\nA cultural anthropologist\, Anru Lee's research focuses on the Asian Pacific region and issues of capitalism\, modernity\, gender and sexuality\, and urban anthropology. She is the author of *In the Name of Harmony and Prosperity: Labor and Gender Politics in Taiwan's Economic Restructuring* and *Haunted Modernities: Gender\, Memory\, and Placemaking in Postindustrial Taiwan* and is co-editor of *Women in the New Taiwan: Gender Roles and Gender Consciousness in a Changing Society*\, *Why Taiwan? Anthropological Perspectives*\, and *Brill Encyclopedia of Taiwan Studies* (The Gender and Women's Studies Section). DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk examines the rise\, circulation\, and impact of data technologies used to monitor reproductive behaviors in contemporary Turkey. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research\, I show how care and control intertwine in public health through what I call surveillance paternalism. Rather than treating this surveillance as an all-encompassing power\, I argue that it operates not by what is monitored but by what is omitted and rendered invisible in databases\, including labor precarity\, domestic abuse\, and state violence. DESCRIPTION:This paper studies persuasive behavior when the sender can control both the information the receiver observes and the model through which it is interpreted (the narrative). Even when the receiver begins with a correctly specified model and understands the sender’s strategic incentives\, the sender can manipulate him and often secure her preferred action with probability one. The key mechanism highlights a strong complementarity between strategic communication of information and narratives\, allowing the sender to strictly outperform a Bayesian persuader with commitment power. We fully characterize the sender-optimal equilibrium for a broad class of information technologies. Softer information lowers the bar for full manipulation\, while harder information expands the set of environments where any manipulation is possible. The results provide a formal foundation for understanding the widespread success of disinformation.

Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

Voters will also elect members of the National Congress\, governors and vice governors\, and more than 1\,000 state legislators. The elections come at a consequential moment for Brazil\, amid concerns about corruption and inflation\, disputes over tariffs and trade\, and growing tensions with the Trump administration.\n\nThe Latin American Elections Hub (LATAM-EH) brings together a group of experts to discuss the stakes of the election for Brazil and its broader regional and international implications. The panel will analyze the results of the first round\, the factors shaping voter behavior\, and the prospects for a potential second round on October 25\, 2026.\n\nThe panelists will be Cesar Zucco (Columbia University)\, Raphael Nishimura (University of Michigan\, ISR)\, and Malu Gatto (University College London).
