SUMMARY:Community Service:Gift of Life Swab Week
DESCRIPTION:Gift of Life is a national bone marrow and stem cell registry that connects patients battling blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma with donors who can save their lives. Most patients don't have a match in their family\, so they rely on strangers joining the registry. Our University of Michigan chapter has added over 2\,700 Wolverines to the registry\, leading to 18 confirmed matches and 3 life-saving transplants. This fall's Swab Week runs November 2 to 6 on the Diag\, and this week we are going up against Ohio State in registrations. Joining takes about five minutes: fill out a quick form and swab your cheek. If you're between 18 and 35 and in good health\, stop by\, bring your friends\, and you could be the match that gives someone a second chance at life. If your interested in volunteering please reach out we would love to have you help out. Go Blue!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:“Who Counts? A History of Voting in America”
DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And\, most of all\, who counted as a voter\, and who did the counting?\n\nOn view September 11-December 22\, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Woll Family Speaker Series Presents: Dr. Tyler Johnson
DESCRIPTION:About the Talk:\nDr. Tyler Johnson is a clinical associate professor of medicine and oncology at the Stanford University School of Medicine\, where he leads the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program and is a principal medical school faculty member. A prolific author and podcaster\, Dr. Johnson explores the place of religion in a post-modern and often secular world through his writing at the \"On The Road to Jericho\" Substack and through recorded conversations at the \"The Doctor's Art\" podcast. Dr. Johnson's lecture will examine what nearly 200 hours of discussion with philosophers\, clerics\, theologians\, doctors\, nurses\, patients\, and authors have taught him about the role of the sacred in the practice of modern medicine and the need for mystery in a realm usually ruled by a devotion to science.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Emily M. Briceño)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Teresa Poggi Lecture on Italy and the Mediterranean World. “Signor Presidente:\" Giorgia Meloni and the Italian Laboratory
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni became the first far-right leader of Italy since Fascism and the first woman to ever lead the country. Four years later\, Meloni has proven resilient\, despite challenging economic indicators and after losing a referendum to limit the independence of the judiciary. A skillful politician\, Meloni has deftly navigated between Italy’s commitments to the European Union and the country’s longtime strategic alliance with the United States\, even as the Trump Administration has pushed to scale back NATO in Europe\, causing confusion and distress in Europe’s halls of power.\n\n From Fascism to the personality-driven phenomenon of Silvio Berlusconi to the anti-system Five Star Movement\, Italy has always been a political laboratory\, a harbinger of political trends to come. With this lens\, what larger lessons can we draw from Meloni’s leadership about the direction of Italy and Europe? Has Meloni normalized the far right or transformed it into a mainstream conservative movement? What are her most concrete accomplishments? As a study in power\, what do we make of this small\, blonde\, fierce woman who insists on using the masculine form of address\, “Signor Presidente”?\n \nThe annual Teresa Poggi Lecture on Italy and the Mediterranean World focuses on contemporary and historical issues related to the region. It is made possible by a generous gift from Stephanie and Sue Augustyniak in honor of their mother.\n \nRachel Donadio is a Paris-based writer\, a contributing writer for *The Atlantic*\, and a former Rome Bureau Chief and European Culture Correspondent for *The New York Times*. She regularly publishes textured profiles and features at the intersection of culture and politics\, as well as literary criticism\, and is a frequent contributor to *The New York Review of Books*. Donadio has reported from more than two dozen countries and interviewed heads of state and major cultural figures\, including four Nobel Laureates in literature.\n \nIn her many years covering Italy\, she has written on Giorgia Meloni’s culture wars\, Curzio Malaparte\, Nicola Gratteri when he was a leading Italian anti-Mafia prosecutor\, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi\, Gina Lollobrigida\, Paolo Sorrentino\, a rare book theft in Naples\, why Italians gesticulate\, Amalfi lemons\, a family of centenarians in Sardinia\, a Bangladeshi Cricket league in Rome\, and the first non-Italian director of the Uffizi. She has also covered the Vatican and led *The New York Times* coverage of the conclave in which Pope Francis was elected.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact gosiak@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.\n\n*Part of the International Institute Theme Year: Sovereignty*\nhttps://myumi.ch/ii-theme
