DESCRIPTION:Since 2013\, PHAST has been going to Grenada in partnership with several organizations on the island.  The University of Michigan School of Public Health (UM SPH) Grenada Partnership serves to achieve sustained academic partnerships for public health education and practice collaboration.  The summer internship program is an opportunity for Master’s students to gain public health experience in a structured setting. Each summer\, 2 UM SPH interns travel to Grenada for an 8-week internship\, supervised by pre-selected Grenada mentors. Over the years we have established mentors in institutions throughout Grenada\, including the Grenada Red Cross\, the Grenada Planned Parenthood Association\, the Ministry of Social & Community Development\, Housing and Gender Affairs\, and more. The internship program is offered schoolwide and does not require any prior connection or familiarity with Grenada before undertaking a Grenada internship. Through this experience\, you will embark on a transformative internship experience in Grenada\, where you will have the unique opportunity to merge theoretical knowledge with real-world impact. Our internship program strongly emphasizes community partnership and ensures a comprehensive understanding of practical applications within the field. \nEligibility:Completion of the PH 616: Grenada course is mandatory. Lurie Carillon\, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals\, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells\, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.

DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid lecture. Join us in person at Rackham Amphitheatre (4th Floor) or via livestream: https://myumi.ch/d8Q7X\n\nIn the span of four decades\, quantum computation has evolved from an intellectual curiosity to a potentially realizable technology. I will describe my thesis work on macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy-level quantization that led to the Nobel Prize\, as well as several other important experiments that advanced superconducting qubits.  Nevertheless\, the path toward a full-stack scalable technology is a work in progress. There are significant outstanding quantum hardware\, fabrication\, architecture\, and algorithmic challenges that must be solved. Here\, we show how the road to scaling could be paved by adopting existing semiconductor technology to build much higher-quality qubits and employing system engineering approaches.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Luis Zaman’s research spans several disciplines to answer fundamental questions about how evolution works. While he often approaches questions from an experimentalist’s perspective\, work in his lab relies on a mixture of computational\, mathematical\, and microbial systems. He is predominantly drawn to understanding host-parasite coevolution because the constant push-and-pull of antagonistic interactions emphasizes the dynamic and interdependent nature of biological evolution. These antagonistic interactions have been implicated in large-scale evolutionary patterns\, such as diversification\, sexual reproduction\, and increasing organismal complexity. How coevolution is further influenced by such large-scale patterns presents problems that orient the lab’s long-term goals.

DESCRIPTION:We study the computation of static mean-field equilibria on a compact state space by formu-\nlating the equilibrium condition as a variational inequality over probability measures. We propose\nan entropic variant of Korpelevich’s extragradient algorithm—the Kullback–Leibler Mirror-Prox\nmethod—in which Euclidean projections are replaced by relative-entropy proximal steps. Each\nhalf-step is therefore an explicit exponential reweighting of the current measure\, implemented on a\nfinite state-space discretization. Under Lasry–Lions monotonicity and continuity assumptions\, we\nprove convergence of mesh-refined ergodic averages and obtain finite-iteration Minty-residual and\napproximate-equilibrium bounds that jointly quantify iteration and discretization errors. Under\nstrong monotonicity\, we derive metric convergence rates for the last\, best\, and averaged iterates.\nWe also develop a KL-type Tikhonov regularization that selects the equilibrium minimizing relative\nentropy with respect to a reference measure. The framework applies to potential and nonpotential\ncost operators and does not require differentiability or convexity of the cost in the individual state.\n\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar\, Ibrahim Ekren and Lu Vy.

DESCRIPTION:Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces\, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances.The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention\, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging\, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. Our goal is to create an accessible\, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. What about telling your family you actually can’t send money home? Or explain to your friends in the lab that you don’t want to spend money on a pizza dinner? It can feel awkward and uncomfortable to say “no\,” but it’s an important part of using your money in a way that works for you. Financial boundaries are guidelines you put in place to help you say “no” with confidence and “yes” with enthusiasm.
