SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Kozma Lecture | The Materiality of Blue: Technical Knowledge\, Innovation\, and Adaptation in the Ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Natural blue pigments in the ancient world were uncommon\, usually sourced from far away\, and difficult to process. Reviewing *shady* characters\, like lazurite and azurite\, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities\, technical knowledge\, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people traveled and experimented in order to obtain blue. The development in the late 4th millennium BCE of a synthetic blue pigment\, Egyptian blue\, made it possible not only to paint in blue but also to use this material in ways other than as a pigment. A combined approach allows us to better tease out the variables and complexities in the *chaine operatoire* (procedural steps) behind the creation and application of these pigments\, using experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and artifact analysis. Tracing how artisans and everyday people in antiquity worked with blues provides an opportunity to explore the material constraints and practical choices of adding color.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum to hear from Hilary Becker\, associate professor in the Department of Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Binghamton University. DESCRIPTION:\n\nRaised on Detroit’s west side as one of seven children\, Shane Ward’s path to global design leadership was anything but conventional. A full academic scholarship to the University of Michigan opened doors that introduced him to the transformative power of imagination\, creativity\, and design. What began as a passion for drawing\, storytelling\, and community evolved into a career spanning more than three decades in the footwear industry\, ultimately leading to design leadership roles with some of the world’s most influential brands.\n\nAfter graduating from the University of Michigan\, Ward began his career with Adidas in Portland\, Oregon\, where he also developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Over the years\, he has designed footwear for brands including Puma\, Converse\, Keen/Fila\, Rockport\, and G.H. Bass.\n\nTogether with his identical twin brother\, Ward co-founded DETNY by Shane & Shawn\, serving as creative director for the men’s and women’s footwear line. The collection was carried by Nordstrom and Macy’s and featured in its own boutique in New York City’s Nolita neighborhood. Beyond footwear\, Ward has expanded his creative practice through large-scale paintings that reflect his love of sneaker culture and the natural world. His ongoing Metamorphosis series explores the intersection of fashion\, identity\, and impermanence through iconic sneaker silhouettes layered with cherry blossoms and butterflies. The paintings contrast the fleeting nature of sneaker trends with the enduring cultural legacy of classic designs\, using these instantly recognizable forms to examine themes of time\, memory\, social status\, and our shared perceptions of style and performance. Like the blossoms and butterflies that drift beyond our control\, the works suggest that while fashion and life are transient\, a rare few ideas and objects leave an indelible mark across generations.\n\nToday\, Ward serves as design director of footwear at Adidas\, where he leads the design team for Originals Running. His journey continues to shape his belief that design is fundamentally about optimism\, possibility\, and expanding what individuals believe is achievable for themselves and their communities.\n\nWith support from Design Core Detroit and Detroit Unesco City of Design. \n\nSeries presenting partners: Detroit PBS\, ALL ARTS\, and PBS Books. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can AI Help Us Build Better Connections? How Social Robots Are Transforming Human Experiences
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nRobots can be highly capable\, but without understanding human preferences\, their utility remains fundamentally limited. This talk advances a framework for human augmentation through embodied social intelligence\, grounded in three key dimensions. First\, human-centered robot design\, where I discuss methods to meaningfully involve people throughout a robot development lifecycle\, while balancing the need for general-purpose systems with the specificity of human needs. Second\, embodied AI systems\, where I introduce my work on robotic hardware fabrication and context-agnostic algorithms that enable robust\, real-world interaction. Third\, robot evaluation in the wild\, focusing on deployments in domains such as healthcare and the need for new metrics that combine experimental rigor with system performance. Drawing from my experience across academia and industry\, including building Astro at Amazon and working on critical AI challenges at Meta\, I highlight open problems at the intersection of AI\, robotics\, and human-centered design. Ultimately\, I argue for a shift in robotics: from intelligence to relationships\, from capability to meaning. Prioritizing human needs\, values\, and lived experiences is not a constraint\; instead it is the path toward building robots that are truly effective\, adaptive\, and accepted.

DESCRIPTION:The American Civil War was a bloody four-year conflict that not only ended slavery in the United States\, but fundamentally changed the country in innumerable ways that still echo today. The young state of Michigan played a key role in the union’s victory both on and off the battlefield. Join us for a conversation with historian Jack Dempsey about Michiganders’ Civil War experiences and how its legacy shaped Michigan history.\n\nJack Dempsey is an avid historian who has long been interested in the Civil War and its role in Michigan’s history and cultural heritage. An award-winning author he has written eleven books\, numerous articles\, and given innumerable talks to academic and general audiences\, as well as serving as President of the Michigan Historical Commission. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from George Washington University.\n\nThis talk is in conjunction with the exhibition “Fill the Ranks”: the University of Michigan and the Civil War\, on display September 24\, 2026-July 2\, 2027.\n\nRefreshments will be provided\, and anyone is welcome to attend this free talk. DESCRIPTION:\"Ninpo is the essence of goshinjutsu (self-protection).\"\n \nDuring the Fall 2026 semester\, Bujinkan Budo Club training will be held on Thursdays from 19:00 - 21:00 (7-9pm) at the Intramural Sports Building (IMSB) in Room MPR B. If you are interested in trying out a class\, please send a message through Maize Pages or an email to michiganbujinkan@gmail.com.
