SUMMARY:Exhibition:Healing Power of Nature: Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Allison Svoboda was born in Detroit. A proud Midwesterner\, she splits her time between studios in Chicago and Pentwater\, Michigan. She is recognized for her ethereal paintings and sculptural installations. Finding the edge between intuitive and deliberate mark making\, Svoboda’s work is a meditation on the earth’s last places of quiet and untouched beauty. Challenging the viewer to rethink their responsibility to Mother Earth\, her collage works are intricate paintings layered to create sculptural works. These paintings are based on fractal geometry (infinitely unfolding terrains of self-similar shapes like those in living things. In 2015\, she received a Hemera fellowship to study Zen and calligraphy in Japan\, which continues to influence her work. \n\nGifts of Art Gallery – University Hospital Main Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:High School Photo Project
DESCRIPTION:In her early career\, Linda Erf Swift worked as a teacher and social worker in public schools\, and later graduated from the School of the Art Institute\, Chicago. 12 years into her current work\, Swift photographs students in three high schools on Chicago’s Southside: Kenwood Academy\, King College Prep (public schools) and University High (private). She asks seniors to bring in a quotation they believe speaks to their identity\, and Swift takes their portrait with it on a blackboard behind them. The images challenge viewers to evaluate their assumptions about adolescents by opening a door into what young people really think and aspire to. The students’ choices reveal a youth culture that is wise and artistic\, assertive and joyful\, discerning and full of possibility.\n\nGifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center South Lobby\, Floor 1. \n1500 E.
