SUMMARY:Performance:Master of Fine Arts in Dance Concert: Sreya Muthukumar
DESCRIPTION:The U-M School of Music\, Theatre & Dance and the Department of Dance present *The Museum of Her*\, an original dance-theatre musical created by MFA candidate Sreya Muthukumar. Performances will be at 8:00pm April 5 and 6. Tickets are free\, available at the door an hour before the shows begin.\n\nMuthukumar's thesis work is an ambitious interdisciplinary project that fuses the vibrant physicality of Indian dance with Western music\, contemporary theater\, and elements of traditional dance-drama. Set against the backdrop of a museum\, this experience delves into the complexities of female identity in a postcolonial world\, challenging the impact of the male gaze on perceptions and expressions of ‘beauty’ and self-concept. Through movement and music\, *The Museum of Her* explores themes of conditioning\, perfection\, isolation and solidarity\, serving as a call for the reclamation of feminine bodies.\n\n*The Museum of Her* invites audiences to ponder the dichotomy of how women are seen versus how they see themselves. Inspired by traditional feminine aesthetics across cultures\, the production juxtaposes these scenes with the landscape of internal experience\, exploring the gap between perception and reality.\n\nAudiences will travel through distinct worlds\, featuring elements of Bharatanatyam\, Kathak\, Bollywood\, modern and jazz styles. Original music and a short film enhance the journey\, culminating in a powerful message of community and strength.\n\nFor press inquiries or further information\, please contact Sreya at sreyaa@umich.edu or on (734)-548-2454.
