DESCRIPTION:Joseph Sywenkyj is the 2024-25 Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia’s Distinguished Fellow\,  and a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan. An award-winning American photographer of Ukrainian descent\, Sywenkyj has lived and worked in Ukraine for the last two decades. He has worked throughout Europe and Central Asia for numerous publications and is a frequent contributor to *The Wall Street Journal*. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums\, including the United Nations Visitor’s Lobby in New York and the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Disrupting Infectious Diseases: Fighting for Our Future
DESCRIPTION:In our globalized world\, everyone is at risk during an infectious disease outbreak. Infectious diseases remain the second leading cause of death worldwide. But the distribution of illness is unequal\, with individuals in low-income countries being 2.5x more likely to die from infectious diseases than those in high-income countries. The fight for an equitable and healthy future depends on our ability to combat infectious diseases through scientific discovery\, innovative interventions\, and reliable policymaking.\n\nThe University of Michigan School of Public Health is proud to present \"Disrupting Infectious Diseases: Fighting for Our Future\,\" a half-day event exploring the past\, present\, and future of preparing\, combatting\, and healing from infectious diseases as a community.\n\nThe keynote will be delivered by Dr. Ashish Jha\, the dean of the Brown School of Public Health and former White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator. \n\nDr. Emily Martin will host an expert panel that features Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian\, SPH alumnus and current Chief Medical Executive in the State of Michigan\, Dr. Juan Luis S. Marquez\, Medical Director\, Livingston and Washtenaw County Health Departments\, and Rev. Horace Sheffield III\, CEO of the Detroit Association of Black Organizations. \n\nThis event is part of The Exchange: Critical Conversations with Michigan Public Health\, an academic speaker series.

DESCRIPTION:Hoshea Love is 85 years old. Born in San Francisco and raised in Southern California\, Love has traveled without bounds across the United States\, getting an education formally and spiritually. He holds degrees in fine art\, metaphysical science\, and biology (specializing in sustainable living) and is licensed in metaphysical science and traditional ministry.\n\nLove’s colorful\, abstract photographs are inspired by nature and the nature of things\, taking inventory of the immense beauty that surrounds us and guides us in our searching.\n\nLove’s work has been exhibited at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery\, Detroit\, and the U-M Museum of Art. He is a former artist-in-residence at The Heidelberg Project in Detroit.
