SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Charge\, Spin\, and Symmetry in a 2D Topological Semimetal
DESCRIPTION:Low-symmetry two-dimensional (2D) topological materials such as MoTe2 host efficient charge-to-spin conversion (CSC) mechanisms that can be harnessed for novel electronic and spintronic devices. Yet\, the nature of the various CSC mechanisms and their correlation with underlying crystal symmetries remain unsettled. For this talk\, I will first discuss how current-induced magnetization in MoTe2 can manifest an extremely large out-of-plane anomalous Hall effect that is driven by asymmetric scattering. I will then present our recent results using local spin potentiometric measurements to directly probe the spatially dependent nonequilibrium spin accumulation in MoTe2 across various sample locations and thicknesses. We uncover an abundance of unconventional spin polarizations that develop uniquely in the sample bulk and edges with decreasing thickness. Using ab initio calculations\, we can construct a unified understanding of all the observed CSC components in relation to the material dimensionality and stacking arrangement. Our findings both illuminate previous CSC results on MoTe2 and have important consequences for the design of future devices utilizing this 2D topological material.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Seminar: Proving rapid global convergence for the shifted QR algorithm
DESCRIPTION:The design of efficient and reliable algorithms for computing the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix (i.e. solving the eigenvalue problem) is critically important in both science and engineering. Despite significant advancements in various practical aspects\, fundamental theoretical questions about the eigenvalue problem remain poorly understood.\nIn this talk\, I will present joint work with Jess Banks\, Archit Kulkarni\, and Nikhil Srivastava\, in which we provide nearly optimal rigorous guarantees\, on all inputs\, for the most widely used diagonalization algorithm: the shifted QR algorithm. Similar results were established by Wilkinson in 1968 and Dekker and Traub in 1971 for Hermitian matrices\; however\, despite sustained interest and several attempts\, the non-Hermitian case remained elusive for the last five decades.
