SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Art of Resistance in Early America
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition addresses the theme of the LSA Fall 2023 semester at the University of Michigan: \"Arts & Resistance.\" This exhibit asks us to think about resistance in different settings\, and in different forms. What \"arts\" did Americans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries use to resist various forms of power? The exhibit aims to show how the people of our nation's past tried to answer those questions\n\nExhibit Hours: Monday - Friday - Noon - 4 pm\n\nLink to online exhibit:https://clements.umich.edu/exhibit/the-art-of-resistance/

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:UMRA - U-M Retirees Association Presents: Preserving the Legacy of Song: The University of Michigan’s Gershwin Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan’s Gershwin Initiative is an ongoing scholarly examination of the Gershwins’ music. U-M scholars\, in collaboration with peers from across the nation and globe\, document and analyze—note-by-note and word-by-word—the treasure trove of works featuring music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. Works include Porgy and Bess\, often considered America’s greatest opera\, as well as the celebrated instrumental works by George Gershwin. Professor Clague will share the current findings from these analyses and discuss how the Initiative is contributing to student education and the international music community.
